Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

Niftythrifter · 02/01/2023 12:00

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

Being pear shape, I wear darker bottoms and more patterned or colourful tops. Don’t wear v-neck stuff.

Been analysed as an Autumn so stick to these colours generally and don’t wear black on the top.

Ignore clothes sizing and wear what’s fits, so could be 12 in one top and 14 in another.

BradfordGirl · 02/01/2023 17:12

Never ever wear anything that is uncomfortable. Life is too short.

Yes! This too.

In particular, shoes and underwear.

Puffalicious · 02/01/2023 18:59

Folk can wear whatever they like, but personally I think black and navy looks the opposite of classy. Perhaps it was my mam drumming it into me? To the extent that I always have bag, shoes, boots in navy (work mainly). If I see someone professionally in e.g. navy trousers and black shoes/boots I do think it looks really unprofessional/ odd/ as if you haven't thought about what to wear.

I don't know what the black and navy dress a PP bought would look like? I suppose it would look better as it's 'meant'.

Like I say, personal choice.

TowerStork · 02/01/2023 19:13

Some of the black rules are bizarre. Surely it depends on the clothes (the cut, style, shade etc)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2023 19:16

I've never met a pair of navy shoes or boots that I thought looked nice.

bibbif · 02/01/2023 19:17

Where to these “rules” come from? I’m sure they’re great if you want to look middle of the road.

yeah they are very conservative & old fashioned.

Black on the bottom means I have to have black on the top too. I believe it was Trinny or Susannah who said black trousers and a coloured top makes you look like waiting staff and it's stuck forever.

Same!
I’ve never forgotten this and now I really only wear black with black.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 02/01/2023 19:21

I don't know where the black and navy thing came from but IMHO it's bollocks.

Also not taking advice from T&S after they put an apple shaped woman in a bias cut skirt which massively emphasised her tummy (could easily have been me).

My only rule - for me - is to avoid anything belted as it just turns me into a sack of potatoes. Interestingly exquisite teeny tiny Meghan Markle also needs to lay off the belted coats and dresses. They do her no favours either 😀

onlyconnect · 02/01/2023 19:23

No brown with grey. They just don't go. Surprising how often I see that.

bibbif · 02/01/2023 19:25

Even Kate Middleton (not a trailblazer fashion wise) has paired navy with black.

Puffalicious · 02/01/2023 19:42

Whether folks think it's bollocks or not, I'd still never wear black and navy.

I've never met a pair of navy shoes or boots that I thought looked nice

I have several, including lovely navy brogues and a chunky-heeled, suede shoe-book that looks great with dresses. But if I'm wearing navy trousers and top I'll wear my beloved gold brogues.

Puffalicious · 02/01/2023 19:42

Boot

Puffalicious · 02/01/2023 19:42

Boot

What do you wear on the other foot?

Sorry - couldn't resist!

woodhill · 02/01/2023 19:49

No black against my face

Tend to wear black trousers with grey or white as oppose to bright pink for example

BreakfastOfWaffles · 02/01/2023 19:50

No trouser waist lower than mid rise for me. Low rise is so unflattering on my pear shaped hips. High waist for preference.

I never wear navy - it sucks the life out of my face. Also no coral, salmon, or dark purple. These colours never flatter me.

No heel higher than a court shoe. No matter how pretty they look, I will be hobbling after half an hour!

NoDairyNoProblem · 02/01/2023 19:57

Never a bold/Smokey eye with a red lip.

CMOTDibbler · 02/01/2023 20:00

For me, personally - nothing with belts, or tie at the back things. No seams under the bust or midi skirts as well as all of the above do absolutely zero for me.
OTOH one of my favourite dresses is navy and black, and I care not about wearing black trousers and a coloured top

HelenHywater · 02/01/2023 20:07

Laughing at the Trinny and Susannah black and colour rule - I always remember this too! I would never wear black trousers and a colour although would also never wear black trousers with a white shirt either as I worry about looking like a waiter.

And black and navy although I know this is old fashioned so try to break the rules here!

One Trinny and Susannah rule I remember is that you wear shorts/short skirt at a length which ends at the slimmest part of your thighs. They also had rules about cropped trousers and ankle straps which cut your legs off and make your legs look shorter.

I never wear toeless sandals or sleeveless tops to work. Although will now wear wide sleeveless tops now. (still not strappy tops).

I stick to my colours though - (had my colours done a few years ago) and would never deviate from these. And for this reason only wear silver not gold.

Yarrawonga · 02/01/2023 20:20

Isn’t that always going to be just above your knees?

Not for me.

Yarrawonga · 02/01/2023 20:21

The rule, I mean.

Maireas · 02/01/2023 20:25

LivingDeadGirlUK · 02/01/2023 16:32

Can someone explain the not mixing black and navy? I do this all the time and thought it looked chic!

It does look chic, I do it all the time.

NancyJoan · 02/01/2023 20:27

Funny, isn’t it?

Love black with navy, it’s chic to me.
Brown and grey scream mismatch.

How odd. I’d never heard that.

Where I live waiting staff wear black trousers or skirts with black or white tops, depending on the type of venue. Definitely no colours.

All black must be some sort of working uniform.

Maireas · 02/01/2023 20:32

I agree. I've never come across waiting staff with black trousers and colourful tops. It's usually black/black or black/white.
