Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

Niftythrifter · 02/01/2023 12:00

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

Well I’ve spent the day in black leggings, a navy tunic with 3/4 sleeves, faux suede boots and my hair in pigtails 😂 I’ll get my (leopard print) coat.

Yarrawonga · 03/01/2023 17:58

No leggings outside the house.

I’m just about to leave the house wearing leggings. I’m on my way to the gym.

I used to have loads until I noticed how many book and TV deals the rule setters were getting, and now I've gone back to just 2: what I like and what I don't.

All hail, Queen Flo. Yes, yes and thrice yes to this.

In that case they become 'Exercise trousers' and are therefore permitted.

Ha ha! Just the thing for my physical jerks session.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/01/2023 18:05

And there was me thinking that 'Physical jerks' were those creepy men you see hanging around the edges of the dance floor at nightclubs.

I was always told blue and green should never be seen. Then I saw blue and green together in Jigsaw and it looked stunning. Quite a bright, jewel green if I could have afforded to buy the skirt, blouse and cardigan I would have.

@Puffalicious www.edits-styling.com/blog/2017/11/28/style-rule-breakers-how-to-wear-navy-and-black-together

At least one thing is clear, the rule doesn't appear to be a rule anymore!!!

It doesn't seem to be!

I'm still very uncomfortable with loads of the images, but royal blue is lovely with black- I wear this a lot- and I can get on boars with items that are made with both on them. I like these ones:

Gok Wan: Just below the hemline is where the eye is drawn to. I see this truth all the time. A boxy jacket that stops at the waist will draw attention to the bum below. A hemline stopping just above the fattest part of the thigh instantly makes the thigh below it look bigger (I have to be careful with tops for this very reason because it’s true). Maxi dresses emphasise the feet or shoes where the hemline stops.

A long fringe which stops just above the eyes emphasises the eyes below (equivalent of a “hemline”). A friend had nice eyes which somehow got lost in her face when she had a middle parting. Then she got a long fringe cut in and suddenly had these amazing, big blue eyes and was transformed.

Personally I far prefer the navy and black pics to the royal blue and black ones. The latter look too 'Princess Diana in the 1980s' for me.

DrCoconut · 03/01/2023 18:33

I don't wear wide leg trousers as I am not very tall and they make me look short and dumpy. I don't wear the kinds of items that some people describe as "classic" as I find them really dull and aging on me, my grandma's age group called it nunty.

Not wearing blue and black together

I love navy and black, one of my favourite colour combinations.

JanesSadLittleLife · 03/01/2023 20:34

I have a large chest and I'm a bit broad across the shoulders so I never wear a turtle neck or roll neck - always a V, scoop or boat neck!

I also have short fat legs and cankles, so I try to avoid ankle straps...

UsingChangeofName · 03/01/2023 20:47

If you feel uncomfortable, then you won't look good.

Never wear something you don't like / doesn't suit you because somebody somewhere has decided it is "fashionable" at the moment.

Diegofrompennyburn · 03/01/2023 20:51

I don’t wear any colours that could look like skin, so no pinks, beiges, tan etc.

floradora · 03/01/2023 21:29

No sportswear unless actually doing sport
Black and navy can look awesome
as a winter, no tans/beige/ yellow
Royal blue = 80's (for good or ill)
slim trousers with loose top / vice versa
no smocking/ gathers ever (especially above the waist)
no florals or "ditsy" prints for me (OK on others)
no synthetics - (bank manager coming around to this one, especially for wool)
at 5'2" no long coats or dresses, but a wide leg-fitted top jumpsuit can work

Does sportswear include trainers? 😀

neveradullmoment99 · 03/01/2023 22:45

I have worn black tight and chunky sandals with pride.
My dd frequently wears the same.
I don't go with the fashion rules. Who makes them? Ridiculous.

echt · 03/01/2023 23:27

These are my rules for me:

Loose top = close-fitting bottom and vice versa. Both loose looks terrible.
Exercise great care with florals - I'm 68 and it's terribly ageing, that milkmaid-ish look. Same with tiers and flounces
Comfortable shoes, always
Never black shoes or boots with denim
I'm careful with red and black - the winter uniform of the older woman, in Melbourne at least. It's way better than a sea of OAP pastels, of course. It's not just about not wanting to look my age, just not like everyone else.
Toenail polish always red. I can't be doing with the grey/blue stuff, it looks as you've dropped a hammer on your toes.

Yes, of course it does 😀

grannycake · 04/01/2023 06:27

This, I retired last year and my life now is very different. I invested in good thermals, waterproofs, fleeces, outdoor leggings, etc as my life now revolves around walking dog on local beaches and woodlands as well as two long trips abroad in a campervan also with dog (&DH). I do wear dresses abroad for eating out and sightseeing but my new motto is buy for the life I lead not the life in my head

RampantIvy · 04/01/2023 06:41

Never black shoes or boots with denim

I only have black boots, and I think they look fine with jeans. I don't own anything in tan.

OxanaVorontsova · 04/01/2023 06:48

Love navy and black together, très chic
loose top/fitted bottom or vice versa but not both loose
black footwear with denim is fine if chunky sandal / boat or loafer (but not the dreaded ‘mum’ boots 😂)
no ditsy florals for me but big florals, geometric patterns, stripes, polka dots seem to be ok
I’m guilty of a strong colour top with dark trousers. Don’t think I look like a waiter.

Iamthewombat · 04/01/2023 06:52

I know that it’s a typo but I am entertained by the concept of the ‘sandal/boat’. I’m seeing a miniature mast with sails and rigging hoisted over the instep.
