Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

No leggings outside the house.

No leggings outside the house.

Is that a fashion rule? Or a your preference?

Echobelly · 02/01/2023 15:22

If wearing leggings, top should ALWAYS cover your bum!

I ignore not wearing coloured tops with black trousers - I look good in head to foot black, but I feel very boring in it

I don't give a toss if boot cut trousers aren't fashionable, they suit me

FKATondelayo · 02/01/2023 15:24

I would never wear black trousers - all of them make one look like a probation officer or manager of a high street bank.

It's a rule in the sense that I have decreed it to be one.

Never more than two colours unless the third is black, white or grey
Never mix patterns
Bold eyes or bold lipstick, not both
But then I am a pretty conservative dresser these days.

You saved me typing all that!

Newnamenewname109870 · 02/01/2023 15:26

Isn’t black all over more like a Waitrose than black with a colour?

Newnamenewname109870 · 02/01/2023 15:26

Waitress haha

RicherThanYews · 02/01/2023 15:27

Never wear horizontal stripes, not for aesthetic purposes, it just makes me dizzy.

BearSoFair · 02/01/2023 16:13

I'm not sure it's a rule to anyone except me but I'll never wear trousers lighter than my top! I just think it looks wrong (on me, plenty of others manage to do it and look fine!)

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2023 16:27

Wide leg trousers must just hit the floor.
Straighter and skinnier trousers or jeans always slightly cropped, above ankle length.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 02/01/2023 16:32

Can someone explain the not mixing black and navy? I do this all the time and thought it looked chic!

QueenWenceslas · 02/01/2023 16:35

Flesh coloured leggings always, always belong in the bin.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2023 16:35

Black and dark blue can look really nice together. It tends to depend on the textures imo.

I agree.

SenecaFallsRedux · 02/01/2023 16:46

Black and navy are fine together. French women do it, so by definition it has to be chic.

Laughing at the Trinny and Susan nah reminder! I definitely would never do black trousers and a block coloured top because of them. I will do black trousers and a patterned/striped top- do this all the time for work- I'd even do white top as long as I had statement jewellery/ coloured shoes so I don't look like waiting staff 😆

But Trinny on Youtube these days says absolutely yes to black with navy. She's very in your face, but I find her close analysis of what makes outfits work quite helpful.

My rule contribution is: a handbag shouldn't be smaller than your bum. It looks out of proportion. However, I think a crossbody must be an exception.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 02/01/2023 16:50

Never, ever wearing black with red.
It's not a combination I like but some barking loon of a woman once told me it's damaging to your aura, so there we have it, it's official.

Never wear three-quarter length sleeves. *shudder

SenecaFallsRedux · 02/01/2023 16:51

My only rule is that I always carry a very good handbag, no matter what. You can get away with a myriad of fashion faux pas with a decent handbag.

IsThePopeCatholic · 02/01/2023 16:54

No heels

I better crack out the oversized tote then :D

Icantremembermyusername · 02/01/2023 16:58

I bought a navy and black dress for work today and had a Trinny and Susannah moment! Bought it so I can wear with black shoes and tights or navy shoes and tights.

highfidelity · 02/01/2023 17:02

Black and navy together is fine, it's chic in fact, far more so than either black/brown or navy/brown.

I think fashion rules are a bit silly tbh, wear what you like and what you makes you happy. That said, the only rule I follow is either cleavage or legs, never both on display, although that said, can't say I show either terribly much.

Divebar2021 · 02/01/2023 17:09

Where to these “rules” come from? I’m sure they’re great if you want to look middle of the road.

Riverlee · 02/01/2023 17:10

Being pear shape, I wear darker bottoms and more patterned or colourful tops. Don’t wear v-neck stuff.

Been analysed as an Autumn so stick to these colours generally and don’t wear black on the top.
