Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

I like grey trousers/skirts with tan footwear. Don't care if the rules say it's forbidden. Think classic menswear - slouchy grey flannel trousers and brown brogues = delicious.

Maireas · 02/01/2023 20:37

I agree, I think that can look good. It depends how you wear colours and what you put together.

NancyJoan · 02/01/2023 20:42

That’s sounds lovely, but I know if I put it on my brain would say know. I think it relates to my grey knee high itchy wool school socks worn with ugly tan lace ups.

LivelyBlake · 02/01/2023 20:42

Always buy the best shoes you can afford.

Knitwear should always be wool, cashmere if possible, and slightly oversize.

Re. colours. I love navy with black, I think it's very chic. I have no problems with any block colour (well, except pink) and black trousers.

My favourite jacket to wear over a dress is an oversize blazer.

Pelo22 · 02/01/2023 20:47

Personal ones

No kitten heels (I'm tall and broad and they don't work on me)

I don't wear red, orange, pink or yellow (red hair)

No polo necks or high necks (otherwise I'm like a pair of boobs on legs)

Waystation · 02/01/2023 20:47

Everything must fit perfectly and be well cut using good fabric - agree with either legs or chest but not both - and what you wear should make you happy, even the dog walking clothes!

I think school uniform might be why I have such a dislike of navy!

OrangePomander · 02/01/2023 20:52

For me, skirts and dresses need to be either above the knee or ankle length.Anything in-between looks frumpy.

But either all black or blacks mixed with brights work really well with my colouring.

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2023 17:21

Yes! This too.

In particular, shoes and underwear.

Yes me too, except for a very nice halter neck ball dress that gradually digs into my neck, I will suffer that because it is fabulous 🤩

Although tis has reminded me I must work out how to stop it doing that!

Youarethesun · 02/01/2023 21:06

I never show legs AND cleavage. Makes me feel exposed.

Cant so strong eye make up with a strong lip. Makes me feel like I have over done it with make up.

Don’t wear grey and brown together. Just not for me.

I do wear navy and black.

I don’t wear red. A deep burgundy maybe. But red always made me look washed out.

I don’t mix silver/white gold jewellery with yellow gold. Which has been more difficult as my engagement ring is a sapphire set in white gold. If I am wearing yellow gold, I wear one of my mums rings that was left to me, on that finger instead.

Yes, specifically never ever navy and black together. I'd do jeans and black or a royal, though.

This one I find weird. Navy and black can look super chic together. No idea who made up this rule!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2023 19:16

I've never met a pair of navy shoes or boots that I thought looked nice.

True!

I love grey and beige together too

SocksAndTheCity · 03/01/2023 00:17

I loathe navy and always have, probably because it was my school uniform colour. In fact the only blue clothes I own in any shade are a couple of pairs of jeans.

No block colour with black, but I do wear it with leopard print. Also abide by the legs-or-boobs-but-not-both rule, and haven't worn heels since about 2002.

Dresses and skirts should be shorter than my coat (doesn't apply to jackets, obviously). I will never wear a 'blazer' as long as my arse looks south.

I also like grey and beige together; also taupe and camel. I have red hair and wear red and pink a lot! Often together 😊

Show me an example and I might believe you!

Black on the bottom means I have to have black on the top too. I believe it was Trinny or Susannah who said black trousers and a coloured top makes you look like waiting staff and it's stuck forever.

Me too. It’s one of the only things I took any notice of from T&S!!

BlackSwan · 03/01/2023 05:47

Dress for the weather/temperature- you’ll look wrong wearing a skimpy dress in winter & black opaque tights with a summery dress looks awful

Youarethesun · 03/01/2023 06:20

pocketvenuss · 02/01/2023 21:56

True!

This is a personal one for me. And purple. Purple is my favourite colour and never found a purple handbag or shoes I liked.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 03/01/2023 06:22

Try not to over-do it with the animal. I absolutely love animal prints. I’m overjoyed they’ve moved into the mainstream. I could wear animal head to foot but I do try not to! 😉

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 03/01/2023 06:42

Nude coloured bra under a white top. People used to say white bra, but it really stands out, a nude bra becomes almost invisible.

I wear black and navy all the time 😆. It’s my favourite.

Agree with boobs or legs but not both and eyes or lips but not both.

MistyRock · 03/01/2023 06:57

I never wear black tights with a pale dress/skirt. Only with dark colours. Nude tights are made for that imo.
No midi or maxi dresses for me. I feel like my mother in them.
I'll choose any colour other than black for most things. I think black has got to be the most boring colour.
Leather shoes and boots are always worth the extra money.
Heels are not worth the hassle.
Make up really finishes off a look. I love choosing my make up to go with my outfit.
Navy and grey are my neutrals, they go with everything.
Like a previous poster said. Leggings are for in the house only (unless you live in a Muslim country/community where legs need to covered). No one wants to see so much of your nether regions.

speakout · 03/01/2023 07:03

I don't follow fashion, so no "rules" for me.

I like loose clothes, layers for warmth, I dislike anything tight.
I don't like scratchy knits, tend to wear mostly cotton.
I like natural colour fabrics, cream, oatmeal, white, some black and grey.

Shoes must be kind to my feet.
I have perfect feet and I intend to keep them that way.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 03/01/2023 07:07

Navy and black!

I did like Trinny and Susannah. I wish they would do an updated version!

Navy and black!

Looks good. Navy is so versatile imo.
