Evening Royal style and beauty fans.
Into the Carolean era, with more bling we hope! Also more state banquets?

Wasn't Queen Mary a kleptomaniac? Or if she spotted something she liked at a home she was visiting she'd write a letter to the owner and go on at such length about the object that they'd feel obliged to give it to her.

Maireas · 06/10/2022 20:18

Yes, she was quite the magpie! If she liked something she'd drop heavy hints, then write to the friend asking for it!
Then again, during WWI and after the Russian Revolution they had to make plans in case things went badly wrong for them, so I think she always looked for portable wealth.

Oooooooo scandal!

Is this the REAL reason behind the Danish royal feud?

HM looks like an early victim of photoshopping there on her waist.
She does have an incredibly tiny waist but that's crazy

Maireas · 06/10/2022 20:22

Oh my goodness!
That's why Joachim married SWP!

NiqueNique · 06/10/2022 20:26

@paradyning someone mentioned that on another thread the other day. Shock I don’t know how much truth there is to it (of course) but it certainly might go some way towards explaining why he married a woman who looks so like Mary, whose name is almost exactly the same and whose birthday is the day after hers...You couldn’t get much more Freudian-esque than that if you tried! And it might also explain the rumoured problems/complexities in the relationship between the two couples.

Maireas · 06/10/2022 20:30

It's all clear now.
This could be a brilliant mini series, couldn't it?

NiqueNique · 06/10/2022 20:32

It’s a tale as old as time!

I've read that people would hide their most cherished objects when she came to visit. 😀

NiqueNique · 06/10/2022 20:44

I bet they did!

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/10/2022 20:50

I'm hoping Catherine has some of the necklaces changed back to their original lengths. Some just look a little short on her.

StartupRepair · 06/10/2022 21:02

I find that rumour hard to believe. He has always looked a bit cold towards her

MotherofPearl · 06/10/2022 21:06

Fascinating stuff from the Danish court. It has always seemed odd what a striking resemblance there is between EBG and SWP.

Speaking of Mrs Greville's bequest, I've long had my eye on the Greville Festoon Necklace, showcased here on Camilla (who certainly knows how to carry off A LOT of ginormous diamonds!). @Maireas if nobody else has claimed it, perhaps you could put me down for it on the SoS?

NiqueNique · 06/10/2022 21:07

Well if one were trying to keep raging lust/love/attraction in check, one might well overcompensate and end up coming across rather cold! Wink

(I never pay too much attention to gossip of this kind. Any comments are tongue-in-cheek!)

I can’t say I’ve noticed coldness, certainly not in the early days of Fred and Mary being together. But there are complications, Joachim/Marie have both said that. So it could be due to that, whatever the crux of it is.

NiqueNique · 06/10/2022 21:09

Oh my goodness @MotherofPearl that’s a stonking necklace!

I’m going to tag @Maireas too and ask for the Delhi Durbar necklace if it’s not already spoken for. 💐

MotherofPearl · 06/10/2022 21:13

Mathilde in an interesting hat. It looks like she'd struggle to see with the brim pulled down like that, and to me it looks too large. The rest of her outfit is okay though.

I meant to post this photo of Charlene a few days ago - she was on her way to the Louis Vuitton show. I absolutely love her sunglasses!

The portrait of Her Maj in the green dress looks as though it's been hand coloured, possibly with oil pastels. I see it was taken in 1951 and it was at about that time that hand colouring, which had been very popular in the 1930s, finally faded away.
l've got a couple of hand coloured portraits of my mother, and they have the same soft, almost powdery look.

@MotherofPearl - Greville Festoon Necklace

I am thrilled to be the new owner of such a magnificent piece! Thanks! Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 06/10/2022 21:23

Charlene looks totally glam in that photo, though at first I thought the headrest behind her was a weird hat.

NiqueNique · 06/10/2022 21:34

I really like Mathilde’s dress - cannot resist a cape. I’d wear that. Charlene looks very glam, the glasses are exceedingly good! She looks a bit better in herself these days.

That’s interesting, my mother and father got married in the 50s and there are one or two photos that were hand coloured. I’m presuming it died out because of colour film being used instead ?

National portrait gallery 1951 lots of gems

Such a stunning photo of HM the late Queen. I think that could well be her waist with a corset. She and Princess Margaret both had hour glass figures naturally and I suspect a proper corset would have been worn under a gown like that to get the “New Look” shape

I've got a copy of those sunglasses. After my eye ops this summer and all the drops including daily atropine I was so photophobic I went looking for the largest sunglasses I could find that let me wear prescription glasses underneath. Friends thought them fabulous. I thought they were too big but they did the job. 🤣
