A sad start to a new thread, but I hope we can celebrate the legacy of Elizabeth Regina, what a woman, and what style!

Yes, that's it, there was a lot of discussion around the technicality of Camilla's title because by default, the wife of a king is a queen not a princess but they needed something to get round the dodgy PR at that time. I totally agree that she's proved her worth though, I think she's fabulous.

Yes the title of Queen Consort was not mooted back then. It would not have been a realistic option at that time.

I've been doing a little research into using "Consort" as a title, as opposed to a descriptive designation. Evidently, the only British consort to have it as a title was Prince Albert. Victoria wanted him to be King Consort, but she had to settle for Prince Consort.

Henry, Lord Darnley, husband of Mary Queen of Scots, was a king consort, but he was styled simply King of Scots. He pushed hard for the Crown Matrimonial, which would have made him a joint ruler with Mary, but was refused.

There was also one king consort in Portugal and one in Spain.

But Albert seems to be the only one to have Consort as part of his official title.

KillingMeDeftly · 18/09/2022 22:06

And Philip II of Spain was King Consort of England, though of course also a monarch in his own right.

I wonder why the DoE was never given the title of Prince Consort?

Seeing all these VIPs I get confused by the age differences between many couples . Are they spouses or offspring 😂😂

lollipoprainbow · 18/09/2022 22:10

I'm looking forward to seeing the outfits tomorrow,
I'm sure they will be spectacular.

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 18/09/2022 22:11

@Maireas Thank you for posting this, I was hoping someone would as I think the Queen has been a fashion icon, particularly in 40s and 50s when she was young but I think also she just had her own style as she got older and stuck to it. It was instantly recognisable. I admire the fact that she didn’t change it much to suit fashion. Same with her hair. I’m hoping others would like to talk about this as I realise there is a lot of interest in what the current royal ladies are wearing here, just wondered if anyone had any favourite outfits of the Queen? I saw today some old footage of Prince Charles as he was being invested as Prince of Wales and the Queen had bright yellow shoes on to match her outfit, this was in the 60s. I can only remember seeing het in black shoes and matching handbag

paradyning · 18/09/2022 22:12

@CliffsofMohair yes that's right.

For the Irish on the thread - our Taoiseach (PM) Michéal Martin , his wife Mary , our President Michael D Higgins (furthest right) with his wife Sabina Coyne Higgins. The other couple are the Irish ambassador to the UK Martin Fraser and his wife Deirdre Fraser.

Bless him Miggledy (Michael D Rocking in the Dàil) is a wee fella

Actually I think Philip of Spain was made a joint ruler rather than consort, but never really exercised any authority. And unlike the later case of William and Mary, his kingship did not survive Mary I.

StartupRepair · 18/09/2022 22:21

Poor CPMary, having her invite rescinded. Especially as 2 kings of Spain got to go!

KillingMeDeftly · 18/09/2022 22:24

@667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast the Guardian had a good piece on HMQ as a style icon along with a gallery of her best looks. I don't agree with the first choice - it's probably the most hideous gown she ever wore - but I like the chic suit in the photo with the docs!

Someone definitely won't be getting an invite to her next birthday party! It does seem quite rude, especially as Marie-Chantal was invited and she isn't even a real Crown Princess, despite her use of the title.

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/09/2022 22:29

I was thinking the same thing when I saw Pavlos and Marie Chantal arrive with Anne-Marie. But I suppose the Greek royal folk are not there in a formal capacity, but more as family. I think Charles is quite close to Constantine.

Pavlos was doing a bit of commentary for one of the US channels.

NiqueNique · 18/09/2022 22:32

Oh lord @KillingMeDeftly — I thought to myself, I wonder what the first outfit is, these things can be quite subjective...

...however I think we’ll all be able to agree on that one! Every time I come upon it I think to myself what on earth is that! Even Max couldn’t pull that off.

Although I do think Daisy could make a good go of it.

MotherofPearl · 18/09/2022 22:35

Thanks Seneca; that's interesting about the use of Consort. I agree with pps that over time the Consort part of Camilla's title will be dropped, and people will simply refer to the Queen.

KillingMeDeftly · 18/09/2022 22:43

@NiqueNique Daisy would think it a bit too understated and might pair it with her infamous raincoat!

KillingMeDeftly · 18/09/2022 22:47

That article mainly covered HMQ's style in her later years but this white (I assume) lace ensemble from her youth is lovely, and look at her tiny waist! But is she wearing stockings with open-toed sandals??

Yes definitely stockings ! A lady would not have gone out with bare legs. I think they are peep toe sandals. Yes her waist is amazing, I’m sure she had the obligatory foundation garment on that most woman wore in those days but she definitely had an hour glass figure naturally in her youth

Thank you for this! I agree the Harlequin multi coloured dress is awful I’m presuming that’s the 70s. Prince Philip was such a handsome man in his youth they were a very glamorous couple. There is a photo of the Queen in a white fur trimmed cape. My grandfather was a furrier and worked at the company in London that made fur coats for her and Queen mother. I think they changed over to fake though as people became more aware of the cruelty.

KillingMeDeftly · 18/09/2022 23:01

The big question none of us have asked (or maybe I've missed it) is what happens to all her clothes now? They'd need an entire palace to store them!

KillingMeDeftly · 18/09/2022 23:02

@667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast I wonder what she did with the furs? She must've had about 100 of them! Daisy still wears her fur coat but I think she said a few years ago that she wouldn't be buying any new furs. In her defence, it gets very very cold in Denmark!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 18/09/2022 23:03

It really annoys me that even now (I'm looking at you DF) that Camilla gets the blame for breaking up Charles & Diana's marriage.
Charles was the one who strayed & Diana was far from perfect.
However I do feel sorry for Diana & Charles as they were forced into marriage & to be fair in the beginning they did try desperately to make it work.

I be actually think if Diana & Camilla were that way inclined (bi or lesbians) they would have had a very happy marriage/relationship together as they seem far more suited.
Camilla the nurturer & Diana the nurtured.
But then that's probably projection as I think my DM & DSM would be better together than either of them of with my DF ( although I love him dearly he's very hard work)

Excuse my rambling a night out with friends & too much wine may be involved 😆

I was wondering that too. I hope that they do something like they did with Diana and have an exhibition. I’m not sure who Daisy is, Queen of Denmark ? I’m not up on foreign royalty

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/09/2022 23:15

Yes, Daisy is the Queen of Denmark. It's her nickname.

The Order of Service has been released. It shows George and Charlotte in the procession. I come from a culture (Southern US) where it's usual for children to attend funerals (I went to my first at seven for my great-grandfather), but based on past threads on MN, I assume it's not that common in the UK. I am sure that William and Catherine feel that they can handle it and that the children want to say good-bye to their great-grandmother.

I'm rather hoping that they'll let all of us in for a good old rummage and a reminisce in the rooms, rails, boxes and wardrobes. I'm happy to organise the wristbands. 😊
