A sad start to a new thread, but I hope we can celebrate the legacy of Elizabeth Regina, what a woman, and what style!

Queen Margrethe, she of the fabulous raincoat. Mother to Fred. MIL to Mary.

lollipoprainbow · 18/09/2022 23:31

@KillingMeDeftly I wondered this too a while ago, maybe some will be donated to charity along with her shoes and handbags, accessories. Imagine wearing something owned by the queen!

RomainingCalm · 18/09/2022 23:41

A new photo of Queen Elizabeth has been released this evening. It was taken as part of the Jubilee celebrations and captures her perfectly imo.

I think we used to have someone on this thread who worked at the place all the clothing is stored. Can't recall the name. I think it will all be catalogued and go into storage.

AdaColeman · 19/09/2022 00:31

That is a lovely photograph of Her Maj, and she's wearing a pair of her favourite brooches, the diamond and aquamarine clip brooches made by Boucheron given to her in 1944 for her 18th birthday by her beloved father.
The brooches can be worn separately as in the photograph, or clipped together to form a large oval, stunning pieces however they are worn!

I'd definitely buy a raffle ticket for one of the Queen's handbags. Wink Wink

Lovely thread as usual.

paradyning · 19/09/2022 06:55

I really liked Dr Biden's dress for the reception. Suits her well

Yes definitely stockings ! A lady would not have gone out with bare legs. I think they are peep toe sandals. Yes her waist is amazing, I’m sure she had the obligatory foundation garment on that most woman wore in those days but she definitely had an hour glass figure naturally in her youth

I listened to a R4 programme called the Queen's English a few days after her death. It analysed how the Queen's accent loosened over the years & it was probably to do with the demise of foundation garments. The waist cinchers pushed forward the diaphragm which affected the pronunciation of words. So vowels such as 'a' sounded like an 'e' for eg bag was pronounced as beg. I was very interested listening to it while I was washing the dishes.

What a lovely photograph of Her Majesty. So warm.
I agree with you about funerals, Seneca. I'm of Scots/Irish heritage and funerals have always included children. I remember going to several as a child - it was even the practice in Ireland to have the coffin in the house at the Wake.
My son was 7 when he went to my father's funeral - we even managed to get him a little black tie.
Anyway. I'm watching the preparations now, what an extraordinary day.

I'm of Mediterranean heritage and agree that I was introduced to funerals far in advance of my school mates in England.
I think the question for me is though why expose them to international view at that level, for arguably pomp and circumstance. The Windsor part would be slightly more intimate with less exposure.

OhMerde · 19/09/2022 08:08

Wonder if they've all brought their own hair stylists and make up artists or whether Kate has recommended some here. Wonder if Nicky Clarke and the like are over there now, getting everyone ready!

hopeishere · 19/09/2022 08:33

Do you think they all spent the night at Buckingham Palace?! Like a massive pyjama party!

I think Kate had a facial or other treatment during the week as she looked very tired one day and then two days later much fresher.

I have a mental image of back stage at Strictly! We of course all speculate about what goes on but wouldn't it be fascinating to have a little glimpse in. I wonder for instance what time Kate got up and started getting ready. Whether she's trying various dresses on and flinging them on the floor saying I don't feel right in that one. I bet the foreign royals have brought their own dressers, hair n make up! I mean, you would wouldn't you if you could!

RomainingCalm · 19/09/2022 09:28

It would wouldn't it @OhMerde. It's all the behind the scenes things that fascinate me - where do they keep all of the glorious outfits for the processions etc? Who's on hand to sew the emergency button onto the guard's trousers? What time did they all get up this morning? Have the Cambridges all got their outfits on a hanger hanging up on the outside of the wardrobe? How do they get all of these people to the right place at the right time? Where is the massive spreadsheet with all the logistics?

Spudlet · 19/09/2022 09:30

Yes, the logistics of getting ready for a thing like this are fascinating! I’d imagine it would be a bit like on your wedding day, except rather than one hairdresser whizzing around everyone, you’d have one each. I wonder if Kate ever sits on the bed in her hair, makeup and dressing gown like I did on the morning of my wedding, having a glass of Prosecco and waiting for someone to come and help me climb into my wedding dress 😂

Gooseysgirl · 19/09/2022 09:34

I'm guessing the Cambridges/Wales stayed over in Kensington Palace last night. I'm channel hopping like mad to get a glimpse of outfits in Westminster Abbey. Carole and Michael have arrived.

Yep same in NI. Children are always included in any family occasion (I have never known a childfree wedding amongst my Irish friends or family).
I took my not quite 6 month old from NE England to Belfast for my Auntie's funeral.
We had my Granda's coffin in our house for the wake, which granted even as a teenager felt a bit weird.

Maireas · 19/09/2022 09:44

No, I'd never come across a child free wedding until very recently! I think it's useful to understand the death of loved ones as a normal life event and that there are strategies to cope, and that the consequent ceremony is a farewell.

Wow that’s interesting, they would be some tight foundation garments to do that though. I’m surprised if that were the case depending on what she was wearing of course but by that time it would have been either an open bottom girdle or a “Merry Widow “ which is an all in one girdle with bra included. Whilst these are quite firm they aren’t as bad as a steel boned laced corset but of course she could still have been wearing an underbust corset for formal occasions like her coronation that dress looked like she could have had a waist cincher at least which would have been boned. I’ve noticed about her accent too but I wondered if this was more to do with having voice coaching as the UK changed so that she didn’t sound quite so posh !

I'm rather hoping that they'll let all of us in for a good old rummage and a reminisce in the rooms, rails, boxes and wardrobes. I'm happy to organise the wristbands. 😊

lol jumble sale 😄that would be fun. She was very tiny though you’d have to be quite short.

The big question none of us have asked (or maybe I've missed it) is what happens to all her clothes now? They'd need an entire palace to store them!

I just found this today written before her death so not sure if this would still happen but it’s interesting

I couldn't agree more. I don't think totally shielding children from death is healthy.
