And I will email the thread to a few companies and see if they will do something about it.

There are threads about this so often that there is clearly a market for it.

All suggestions gratefully welcomed.

So, I will start

I think that something in a smartish waterproof but breathable fabric (must be washable) with the following;

Style - A choice of plain straight, belted straight or A-line.

Colours - Black, Brown, Navy, Biscuit, Cream. Also seasonal colours would be good I guess.

Hood - Option of detatchable or not

Lining - zip out washable padded lining so you can wear on the tube to work without sweltering and zip it in when you go out in the cold. Choice of plain or patterned would be ideal.

Pockets - decent sized with a closing flap thing to fill with tissues and random crap

I'd like something long enough that I don't end up with soggy legs, but yet doesn't look like a marquee.
Years ago I borrowed a coat from a friend that was like a trench coat with an ankle length, full skirt (iyswim), belted and nipped in at the waist. Wish I hadn't given it back as it was fantastic - waterproof, warm, stylish, and looked great on me.
Washable is top of my agenda - atm have to wear my horrid long, hooded fleece coat to take DS to nursery as he always wipes snot on me - and it doesn't come off black wool which is my only respectable coats.

I would like some bright colours instead of the boring old black, navy etc. And no belt for me but a slightly fitted shape so i look like i do have a shape and am not just a sack of potatoes. Apart from that agree with OP re hood, lining, zip pockets would be good, not at 'nork' level . Look forward to seeing the finished product! And not too pricey either!

Cappuccino · 18/01/2008 12:41

don't you get a wet neck with a hat

god I hate having a wet neck

Cappuccino · 18/01/2008 12:41

wet knees

I hate wet knees as well remember them from junior school

Enid · 18/01/2008 12:45

i hate hoods unless seriously walking in gale and not afraid to pull drawstring tight in manner of sexually repressed Brown Owl.

hats rule

omg
this is like the search for the holy grail
the item you describe does not exist in adult sizes

CountessDracula · 18/01/2008 12:52

EXACTLY

Which is why I have decided to make it exist!

Don't get a barbour.

They are crap.

The hood (which you have to buy separately ) always comes off.

They are not warm (unless you buy a separate fleece to attach to them).

They make you look like an animated small shed.

I bought one because I moved to the country and thought you had to. Then I never wore it.

I need a waterproof coat that is smart enough to wear with smart jeans and boots if you are going into town. Can wear anything walking the dogs, but if it's raining and I want to look vaguely trendy, I'm stuffed.

I'm thinking, single breasted, just above knee, semi-fitted, range of colours from black to funky.

Not much to ask.

Cappuccino · 18/01/2008 13:49

lol lol at 'animated small shed'

I had one when I was a teenager

do they still smell/ feel slimy/ look crumpled?

what is to recommend them?

Bobbiewickham · 18/01/2008 13:58

Yes they feel slimy and smell and look crumpled.

Nothing to recommend them. At all. They are bloody freezing as well.

GrapefruitMoon · 18/01/2008 14:06

If it hasn't already been mentioned, some sort of "peak" on the hood so that if it rains and you wear glasses, you can still actually see where you are going....

Actually, now that I am buggy free at last and so can carry an umbrella, I am not so much in need of a jacket like this anymore....

i'd like funky cheery colours( red, grass green, cornflower blue) with fleece unzippable lining.must have the ability to be warm enough for snowbut also wearble on a wet spring day.should have zip not buttons.
hood should be detatchable.so should the fur if there is any
exterior colour must be block colour not like something from millets( sporty)
must be long enough or zip off bottom so can be worn with a skirt and not look wierd.
must be less that £50

Cremolafoam · 18/01/2008 14:29

must NOt be quilted or have any resemblence to a duvet

florenceuk · 18/01/2008 14:31

I want hi-tech waterproof breathable fabric (think goretex or reflex) in nice shape, knee-length with reasonably wide cuffs (so you can pull the sleeves up and look at your watch). Something that doesn't require re-proofing (my Squall jacket has never worked properly since I washed it). Something roomy enough and long enough to wear over a suit/skirt and not look stupid. Detachable hood - I fear a peak or volume adjuster would look silly though. No belt as I'm too short and fat. And not in the same dot pattern as my 3-yr old's coat - no bright spots or umbrellas please. Maybe we could ask Muddy Puddles or Togz to branch out?

CurrantBun · 18/01/2008 14:33

If it hasn't already been mentioned (haven't got time to read whole thread at the mo) PLEASE can it come in petite sizes or at least go down to a size 6? Most coats swamp me.

Preferred style mid-thigh and A-line, semi-fitted. And an inside pocket would be good to put a mobile/iPod in.

Don't want much, do I??

Cappuccino · 18/01/2008 14:35

cremolafoam has it right

Alambil · 18/01/2008 14:49

like this, minus belt, plus hood; up to size 30 but NOT just increasing by an inch everywhere - SHAPE it too! Fat people have waists too ya know!

Alambil · 18/01/2008 14:49

oh, and cheaper!
