And I will email the thread to a few companies and see if they will do something about it.

There are threads about this so often that there is clearly a market for it.

All suggestions gratefully welcomed.

So, I will start

I think that something in a smartish waterproof but breathable fabric (must be washable) with the following;

Style - A choice of plain straight, belted straight or A-line.

Colours - Black, Brown, Navy, Biscuit, Cream. Also seasonal colours would be good I guess.

Hood - Option of detatchable or not

Lining - zip out washable padded lining so you can wear on the tube to work without sweltering and zip it in when you go out in the cold. Choice of plain or patterned would be ideal.

Pockets - decent sized with a closing flap thing to fill with tissues and random crap

I don't like trench coats much, do you? They're too wide looking.

can i vote for charcoal grey and deffo black as colours.
a line suita all (doesn't it?) and works well with that sort of fabric...
knee length please (most versatile and flattering imo).

I would like the hood to be adjustable so that on wet and windy days it actually stays up. Its impossible trying to walk along a road with no pavement, holding on to 2 children, book bag etc and hold on to your hood to stop it blowing off every 2 seconds.

Hood should also be detachable as others have said.

Genuinely waterproof so that when you walk the dogs in a gale you actually don't need to replace sodden layers of clothing underneath.

Enid · 18/01/2008 11:54

if you are walking dogs in gales you definitely need a barbour or a drizabone

anything else is madness

Yep - for walking dogs in a gale you just need a berghaus or something - surely no need to be stylish? I'm thinking more a waterproof coat you could go out in, or wear to work etc, with nice shoes or boots (I have a horror or anoraks with smart shoes)

Oh no I think you DO need to be stylish if walking a dog. Don't you?

[worries]

Well maybe - outdoorsy stylish though, with nice sensible walking shoes etc. Different from urban stylish imo (golly this is confusing)

ahundredtimes · 18/01/2008 12:05

Poor you. Step away from the screen. Take paracetamol. Go for a walk in unsatsifactory coat?

Enid · 18/01/2008 12:06

good hat essential rather than hood (no constant adjusting in strong wind)

Enid · 18/01/2008 12:07

for work I wear nylon padded jacket (brown with belt, matalan) and brown bakerboy style hat so no need for hood and better than umbrella

Enid · 18/01/2008 12:08

saw lovely woman in supermarket in black nylong jacket and black wool cloche hat, very cool

ahundredtimes · 18/01/2008 12:13

I have a black cloche hat! Dh laughs at it.

Eliza2 · 18/01/2008 12:14

I have a Barbour but I hate it. It's so drab and unflattering. I want something with a bit more....fizz. ;)

CountessDracula · 18/01/2008 12:24

I still have my (stiff and smelly) Barbour C 1980 should I resurrect ti?
