I had to go to the office today, so here's my work OOTD. I brought a scarf with me so that I can cover my sleeveless arms if any of the female colleagues says I'm dressed inappropriate.

@toucaninjapan seeing how lovely you look, I am reminded of how much I miss indoor scarves. They're practically sartorial heresy on Mumsnet. But that scarf looks lovely on you. I think we should start a movement to bring them back...

Well, I seem to have run out of different outfits to put on here, so I'll lurk, admire, take notes and pop up when I have something thrilling to contribute!

@EllaPaella I read some of the thread which talked about denim jackets and dresses being dated and found it thoroughly depressing. I couldn't put my finger on why, but I think it's because I found the angle so negative. Instead of focusing on what the new trends are it became more of a 'what not to wear'. I guess it comes down that difference between style and fashion which is often mentioned on this board - just because something isn't the latest fashion doesn't mean it's not stylish, so I find using terms like 'dated' quite negative - and sad, what I love about this thread is seeing everyone's different sense of their own style.

Anyway, enough of my rambling musings on that one!

Everyone looking great as always - @Sickoffamilydrama I agree, the red dress is beautiful and the espadrilles look like a great option.

@PalacePaper I just take it all with a pinch of salt. Those type of threads have the potential to be really interesting but inevitably end up turning into a slanging match as people take so much offence by them. What we all see everyone wearing in real life is so different to what some on here claim is dated that mumsnet is like a totally different universe. I follow mumsnet on facebook and it's interesting how the comments on there are always so different to the ones on the anonymous forum, here can be bonkers.
I have a very good friend who is probably one of the most stylish people I know. I remember her saying a couple of years ago that if we ever saw her in dungarees then we should all shoot her - funnily enough she was donning a pair of dungas from Other Stories recently (and looking amazing in them) and we had a chuckle when I reminded her of her absolute disdain not so long ago!
I doubt there is a single person in the world who dresses impeccably and 100% contemporary every day. Probably the majority of us just wear whatever is easiest and the least offensive to put on at 6.30am when stumbling out of bed. I just don't have the time or budget to dedicate to keeping up with trends, I know what I like and I think I'm good at knowing what suits me so I stick to that. I spend the largest part of my week in surgical scrubs, a swimming costume and towelling robe or pyjamas 😁 I have stopped wearing skinny jeans as much as I used to (although I do still wear time to time) simply because there's been so many new styles to try over recent years that I've enjoyed having more options but I don't think that skinnies are 'dated' as such, just that we are used to seeing people in a wider range of styles.
What I like about this thread is that it encourages me to put a little more thought into my outfit each day, be that adding a bit of jewellery or deciding what shoes add something to the outfit.
This is such a lovely thread and so very 'real'. What real people wear on a daily basis, no-one claiming to be the authority on style and fashion.

@PalacePaper I'm not a big fan of the royals & those related to them, but look at these beautiful rich ladies rocking outfits which some people on MN call dated. They couldn't care less & they look absolutely fantastic.
For real, who cares? I don't really like how many of the current fashionable trends (puffy sleeves, wide pants, frills) look on me and I'm not gonna wear them (I think they suit other people though). I'm going to continue loving my skinnies and cardigans, Japanese ladies are going to continue wearing leggings underneath dresses (so they don't tan), and I think you look absolutely lovely in the pieces you choose to wear and who cares what others see as dated.

@faffadoodledo , @EllaPaella , @PalacePaper love your classy & elegant, yet simple outfits

Too kind @toucaninjapan! If I was petite like you I would love to wear the beautiful dresses you wear. I am however what could kindly be called of 'athletic build'! I think I would have an interesting time shopping if I had to live in Japan and also pull together workwear as you do. I'm intrigued by the modesty thing - you mentioned that covering your shoulders is a thing. I hadn't realised that might be a thing in Japan.

Today I've had a bit more time to breathe - not the most exciting outfit but nevermind.

Worn with suede tan espadrilles that just about survived an impromptu trip through a stupidly wet field.

@faffadoodledo I feel there are many expectations on how you should look in Japan, and Japanese tend to be very straightforward about it. Starting from comments on your weight to the choice of your clothes. It's like there are several accepted categories and you should obviously fall into one, otherwise you stick out like a sore thumb and others would gladly tell you about it (meaning good so that you can change yourself to fit in).
When I gave birth to DD last year and I had to go for midwife's appointment, I was lectured that I am a mother now so I should look like one (she didn’t like that I was wearing a short-sleeved dress when it’s +25 outside and not putting a cardigan on, since all moms are supposed to cover their skin). Same with office attire, showing skin (arms included) is considered too casual. But when it’s humid +39 outside, nobody’s stopping me from playing the foreigner card and suddenly forgetting that wearing sleeveless top or dress to the office is too showy.
I know it's kind of a no-no to be wearing shorts or bright flowery prints now that I'm a mother (and also being in my 30s) unless I’m on holiday as it is not decent enough, but oh well. I’m not ready just yet to dedicate myself to only wearing earthly colors and long wide dresses. And I don’t want to limit myself to only wearing sleeveless garments on the weekends. I’m still gonna wear what I like unless it starts affecting my half-Japanese DD in a bad way (I hope she won’t be ridiculed for my clothing choices).

Now that Boden dress is my kind of dress! I have two from a couple of years back which I wear loads (with cardis and denim jackets). I actually couldn't do summer without them. I may have a peek and see if I can find yours so I can prepare for the eventual demise of my others!
