Nice cardi Flo, I could never stand the furnace property of a cardi though, probably at the root of my dislike of them on me. Is the new Uniqlo U collection dropping tomorrow or next week?

Thanks for the dress input 70s now I'm flip flopping towards keeping it again 🙈 it does smell significantly less strong of dye now then when it first arrived, fairly sure it'll come out in the wash. Assuming the pandemic really is ending I'll probably be quite thankful for it next year...

Micro I'm not sure what you're referencing because stiff and sculptural aren't always the same thing, the stiffest things around are hard tailoring (think military uniforms), you can do that on the cheap (entire armies do it), sculptural is just a difficulty factor in design and manufacturing (plus sourcing the right material) and it vastly narrows down accessibility shape and size wise so you see less of it at the lower price points as their business model is volume geared, where designer brands rely on bags, shoes, accessories and beauty to finance the clothes which are mostly sold at a loss (which in my deluded mind means they're a smart buy 😂).

I give up with my autocorrect, I only have myself to blame for clicking yes whenever it asks to update it, it always ends in tears, although AC will probably say it's tares Hmm

Delurking Smile hello all. I'm having a wardrobe overhaul and buying some T-shirts and jeans plus a cardigan, jumper and coat from my favourite place. I won't say where because I've noticed from lurking on style and beauty that it seems to get slated! Looking forward to my parcel arriving. I don't buy many basics so I end up with a wardrobe of fancy things and hardly anything for low key everyday life.

Duvet I got some next shoes 20 years ago brown leather ballet pumps type of thing but a little sturdier looking. I'm still wearing them. Amazed at the quality for the price.

Microbius I don't know if it helps at all but when I need to stop spending I go through everything I already have so when I see something I like I remind myself I already have something similar or something suitable and I don't need it. That's stops me buying multiplies of things. You could also take some cash out for spends at the beginning of the month, then put your card in a jam jar of water in the freezer. You can defrost it in an emergency (and for next month to get your spends out) but you can't shop with it. You'll need to unsave your card details on all the websites too otherwise that isn't going to work.

botemp · 02/02/2022 12:21

it's Saint and Sofia or Hush isn't it?

Welcome, regardless, hope it lives up to expectations. Freezing cards is very hardcore, my freezer only ever sees tights and jeans. I think it helps though that my credit cards are direct debited the full amount in the middle of the month. I've always avoided the ones that allow you to build up debt as the rate they charge is insane but I could also see how easily you start living on money you don't have yet. My parents are/were quite reckless with money (they've got plenty but would totally forget to pay bills and when you live abroad they immediately cut you off, I ended up doing their admin as a teenager) so I've ended up their polar opposite and am quite aware where everything goes.

WildPoinsettia · 02/02/2022 12:33

botemp thanks for the welcome Smile

Not those brands no, it's towards the lower end of the market Blush but it's all 100% cotton and there's some wool in the coat and jumper. I've bought from them before so I know it'll all fit fine and I'll be happy.

Would you mind telling me the purpose of jeans and tights in the freezer? I'm presuming it's not just a personal idiosyncracy! I've never heard of it before. As I go through life I keep finding things I've never heard of that turn out to be quite important.

I don't believe in debt unless it's a mortgage, but I do have a habit of spending absolutely everything on things I don't need and would like to get into savings instead. You never know when you'll need a rainy day fund.

botemp · 02/02/2022 12:48

Jeans, just the 100% denim ones, they last longer and stay comfier the less you wash them so true denim aficionados only ever stick theirs in the freezer (kills all germs apparently), I just do it to extend times between washing. Tights I stick in an individual plastic bag after washing and 'dry' in the freezer. I've forgotten exactly how it work but it just makes the elastic last longer but you have to do it from when you buy them apparently it doesn't work if you've dried them conventionally previously. It still sounds mystifying to me but my tights do keep well since doing this.

Yeah, I'm not much of a buy everything in sight person, that's not down to great restraint or anything but I think you get like that when you've cleared out a few dead relatives' houses/things.

Microbius, The bag will probably mainly be worn with the double strap because I have other cross-bodies just big enough for the essentials of dog walking. Changing it to cross body is straightforward but it does make it harder to get into the bag, irritating for shopping but an advantage if using it for sight-seeing or travelling, for example.

Thought process was that I have been thinking I needed a plain, smartish contemporary bag, but most I saw in pictures didn't appeal much. The high-end/name bags I liked boiled down to the Loewe Puzzle, an Hermes (forgotten the style name) and the woven cabas types from BV and I am much too mean/poor/old to spend ££££. And apart from the local posh frock shop, it's rare for me to browse bags as the local towns are short on leather goods.

I'd write more but I need to dash for the next phase of the allergy test process.......

microbius · 02/02/2022 13:39

Wild and bo - I learned more this morning than in the last year! Freezing you card! And wet tights!

Thanks everyone for input on bags (and xing) and how to stop spending money online. I completely missed the transition from fitted to loose silhouettes (had baby) and when my last jeans died, I think I've got into a bit of a panic as it seemed that
A.I don't understand new silhouettes
B.I don't have any clothes wide enough, so when I got wide trousers not only the length didn't work (my first post here), but all of my tops were also way off.

I feel there's been a major shift in the recent years which I missed and although I do have some clothes that works now, I realise how tight-fitting a lot of my existing clothes is. Maybe it is also about ageing and nearing 45

microbius · 02/02/2022 14:06

P.S. I understand what you mean about stiffness, bo, it is probably the wrong term. But you know, the solidity of the front flap on some of expensive bags, I haven't encountered in bags under £100 which tend to be soft. Of course it's design&material as you say but I would have thought design is often copied / material mimicked but for some things it is not happening, although I would imagine it could still appeal to a large market. [or maybe it is happening but i haven't noticed]

Similarly, I bought MH trousers recently, and her cotton drill is so thick, they literally almost stand by themselves Smile, although not designed to be "sculptural" explicitly.

In terms of internet shopping, we seem to be in a new reality, especially post-brexit in Britain and post-covid where lots of small independent shops have shut down and only operate online. I do rely on them to buy scandi things as they are long enough on me, or German things for the kids. But even English lingerie places like Ayten Gasson have moved entirely online. It just transforms the realm of possibility; while one can still go to shops (if living in or next to a big city), it is mainly big brands or the ones that have substantial representation in Britain that one can find. I do lament the loss of international dimension post-brexit, the extra costs, taxes, the loss of ease with which I could get Danish tights and Swedish trousers ... And then doing it all online just transforms everything, how much you spend, what you actually tend to buy (tops instead of trousers, light and bright colours instead of black, wrong colours, the question of decision-making, whether this is exactly right or just ok) It also in many ways removes the discovery of something you didn't expect

WildPoinsettia · 03/02/2022 11:07

Thanks for the info about freezing clothes. I've heard of a similar thing with trainers. I think you need heat to kill the germs but freezing them makes them go into a coma for a long time, or something like that! I wonder what it does to elastic in tights, the science I mean. I only have a small freezer so I'll carry on putting my things in the wash.

botemp · 04/02/2022 09:27

I can't remember the exact science but I think it puts the tights back in their original state, the less stretched out they are the less likely they're to run. The jeans I'm not so certain about either, I think a domestic freezer might not kill the germs but I just use it to extend between washes in winter, I'd otherwise just hang it outdoors. I think officially you're supposed to wait six months between washing, I never managed that long.

Just popping back in to add to the colours chat. 10 yrs ago (post baby) I had mine done with an independent consultant, who was a friend of a friend. It was useful, as it was not seasons but spectrums of where your colouring was on light/dark, cool/warm and bright/muted. She was also about how to wear stuff you liked that didn't 'fit' eg pairing colours etc. It told you the rules, so you could break/bend them iyswim.

Redandblue11 · 04/02/2022 17:47

Not too much to report , but a quick note to say that I saw Almodovar’s Madres Paralelas (parallel mothers) and aside from being an excellent film with two stories running and complex relationships (very Almodóvar ) .
I really enjoyed the costumes and photography of the scenes.
I got a kind of nostalgia from the Latin cultures way of dressing, which you can see in Spain obviously and is distinctive from here in the Uk. Although in Argentina the way of dressing is a different take , but I think you can see an ‘under layer’ of Latin way … I haven’t pinpointed it yet what it is exactly…

botemp · 04/02/2022 21:05

I know what you mean Red, it's often a bit frilly without being frail or dainty, not sure how it's pulled off, it's a fierce feminity that is quite strong but it's a hidden layer underneath that only reveals itself when needed and then it can be scary. The French and Italians don't seem to quite have it in the same way. Something statuesque about it too, like the face hovers above the body somehow, the neckline seem of some importance.

I loved Penelope Cruz' wardrobe in Volver, people went on and on about it, it was very looked down upon working class and back then it was totally fine to write that off as bad taste Hmm but I enjoyed it so much, not so much for the fashion/style of it but because it was so prominently present, it was like half her character.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the new movie when it's available to stream a I never quite make it to an actual cinema, it must be at least a decade or longer that I was in one.

OP posts:
quirkychick · 05/02/2022 15:42

red, that's very interesting about Latin style. I have an Argentinian friend I see quite regularly on the school run. She is very stylish (also just happens to be an artist) . I don't think she wears particularly different clothes than UK counterparts, but puts them together differently, somehow. Quite casual, neutral clothes yet to polished and glamorous at the same time.

Redandblue11 · 08/02/2022 08:35

Bonjour! Anyone here? …
I actually haven’t watched Volver Bo, I might do it one evening when at home.

After dithering for days and weeks I got a pair of grenson boots. However they will have to go back , they are really well made and fit well but I have a really sensitive right foot and the stitching of the leather and suede gets right on the bone of my toe and feels uncomfortable. I might try again walking on them inside the house but part of me thinks I cannot be bothered with being hard work … I want a pair that fits like a glove. I will see …
The second photo is the boot on my feet, I am not actually wearing that skirt I just held it to get an idea. I just wanted something easy to wear with skirts/dresses/wide trousers type thing.

Morning! Very quiet on this thread - seems everyone is (wisely) hibernating through early February before spring springs.

red those boots are lovely, but if they don’t feel comfortable, then they have to go. Assume you have tried the thick sock + blast of hairdryer stretch trick with no success? Sometimes it’s just the thing.

For a less fancy but still £ alternative, Russell & Bromley have a few options. These might be closest without the cursed side-zip: www.russellandbromley.co.uk/combat/373276
A friend has some slightly different ones she got in the autumn, and they look great. Bonus is that there may be a store near you to try on.

botemp · 08/02/2022 10:38

I agree they should probably go back, stitchting friction issues never really resolve IME. I'm personally not a big fan of the suede part of it either.

Getting back to the cultural style chat, I've always wondered how much of it is transferred from one generation to the next, I've certainly inherited a lot from my mother and grandmother which is very much shaped by history and circumstance and geographical displacement but I do wonder how far it stretches. Can you spot a bit of Latin flair (whether it be style related or otherwise) in your DS Red?

I haven't been hibernating (sounds nice though) but it is definitely that February blah feeling at the moment. I did have a nice day out in Rotterdam last week and tried on lots of interesting things (they have a few really good boutiques) ended up buying a burgundy Dries van Noten top which isn't very obviously Dries van Noten at all but oh well. Also nearly bought the pair of Joseph silk trousers I already own in black (Elle has it too) in a sort of musky mauve colour that went really well with the top but it's a difficult but unique colour. I seem to be very drawn to the unique colours that we don't see in clothes a lot lately but I'm not that eager to pay out full price for things where I don't know how versatile the colour really is yet. These are the trousers but the colour was definitely a lot duskier in real life but maybe I tried on the other colour but I'm pretty sure it wasn't that beige either.

Redandblue11 · 08/02/2022 12:49

Thank you both for the feedback I will return them. Yes stitching issues are a pain.
Thanks for the link shangpie, I don’t have a RB shop near me but I am supposed to go back to the office (once again) later this week just two days a week which is plenty for me so I will try. But I have fo say those don’t ‘call me’. Something about their shape.

I agree on cultural inheritance and I have definitely inherited from my mum and our circumstances (displacements too). With DS is trickier from the style POV as he is a pre teen now so getting into the dressing with the uniform that the rest wear … but he is definitely not a super follower (yet anyway) of trend or wanting to have latest this or that (that might change …)
But his outlook, way of saying things, expressing emotions, enjoying certain art or applied arts I think is influenced by me and my culture. He has also seen and been to places where people had very very basic houses and clothes, polar opposite to what he is used here.
I have always taken him to my home country once a year and many times he has had the chance to travel to other Latin countries too (covid aside) so he has a ‘flare’ I think , even though he has a science and maths mind.
The above sounds all very good, I am subjective after all Grin it could well be hormonal outbursts that I attribute it to having Latin genes Blush

From which cultures are your biggest influences Bo?

Redandblue11 · 08/02/2022 12:49

Forgot to say, the trousers are superb. The colour is great Bo

XingMing · 08/02/2022 14:07

Love the boots red, and sorry they irritate your foot... any possibility that a slightly thicker sock could help? Otherwise, you will have to continue your quest.

Floisme · 08/02/2022 18:23

Sorry about the boots Red. I once managed to tame some Solovair boots that were rubbing on the bone of my foot but a) the source of the problem turned out to be the 'tongue' thing and I was able to manipulate it and b) they were seconds from the factory shop and reduced by 60% so there was an incentive for perservering. If I'd paid full price they'd have gone back.

Welcome WildPoinsettia I'm still trying to work out what the brand everyone slates is!

I'm not sure what my cultural influences are other than the post WW2 thing about not wasting anything and saving for best. And never play on bomb sites - that's been very useful.

botemp · 09/02/2022 10:31

Yeah me too, Flo, Primark doesn't deliver so I'm stumped. I know Fat Face and Joules get a pasting for being very middle class MN but I think those aren't considered cheap.

The cultures question is a bit difficult to answer Red as it delves a bit too much into history, the place still exists but it's a different country and culture now, the culture only really exists within the Netherlands now and it's somewhat dying out. I think like with Flo WWII is a massive influence, my grandparents and their families were held as civilian POW in Japanese internment camps under terrible conditions and when they were liberated those that survived suddenly found themselves on the wrong side of a civil war of independence and had to flee the country. I think if you've seen the worst of humanity beauty (general not physical, physical beauty isn't a great attribute to have in war) becomes really important, as does the ability to have valuable possessions you can pack up/wear allowing you to leave.

The welcome into the Netherlands also wasn't great (even though we are effectively or mostly Dutch genetically, just not culturally) so I think there's also a sort of pride taken into not fitting in and rejecting the very Calvinist notions that shape Dutch culture.

I did have to think of you and your DS this morning Red, I was airing out the bedroom and the Latin child of one of the neighbours was going off in a tantrum in Spanish. It's so different to a Dutch child having a tantrum which is lots of wailing and sniffing with the occasional incomprehensive word where she was this brilliant torrent of clear words rapidly demonstrating her displeasure with precision, much to her father's chagrin but my delight.

OP posts:
WildPoinsettia · 09/02/2022 17:29

I like those boots Red with that skirt too. Shame they're rubbing you.

I might do a low buy year this year. I really don't need anything else at the moment. Although I do have my eye on a hat and scarf set which might even be discounted soon what with winter nearly being over. It's knitted black with metallic thread which catches the light and shines all the colours of the rainbow. If it's there when I next go past the shop, I'm buying it.
