Evette, from Woolworths.
Didn't Debenhams briefly have their own range a few years ago?

@Jacaranda75

There was a make-up shop in Covent Garden who sold their own range. They went out of business about 15 years ago. Does anyone remember it? I bought loads from them as I worked in Covent Garden.
There was a shop that sold stage make-up - Leichner I think.
Babysharkdoodoodood · 26/11/2021 18:33

I've still got my Ruby & Millie brushes and make up bag, and use them daily.

And to a pp, I think Laura Mercier do lip powders. I've got one in my stash and it's brilliant.

Tottie · 26/11/2021 18:37

Does anyone remember "Cosmetics to go". They had some nice bits of make up and delicious chocolate shower gel.
I used to like Sensiq set foundation too.

Maggiejardine · 26/11/2021 18:43

Frenzy perfume by Goya. Bought it as a teenager in the 60s, (showing my age now), would love to buy it again but no longer available

They're now Lush. I did the CTG tour at their factory in Poole and spent way too much in the shop.

*@notacooldad** Prescriptives?
No. I lo ed Prescriptives but I could only get that in Manchester.
Its come to me, the brand I was thinking of was Liz Collinge, I'm sure it was!
I remember all the hype with her being Andrew Collinge's wife.

I think I still have a Liz Collinge make up brush ...

I remember Lip Potion - sticky lip gloss in a roller ball. The ads used to have a bloke saying 'Your lips, they're suddenly so shiny' 😂

woodhill · 26/11/2021 19:11

Was there another brand in the late 70s similar to Max Facto but called Maxi or something similar

BooneyBeautiful · 26/11/2021 19:20

@Chouxs

I remember in the 80's, mum attended a Jafra makeup party and bought one of their lipsticks. I think they are still going, but abroad. Anyone else know of or remember Jafra?
I remember going to a Jafra party in the early eighties. Bought a few bits. One thing I remember them saying was that when you get to about 19 your skin starts to age, so you should never use soap on it because that will cause dehydration. I have never put soap on my face since!

Ultima II Loved it
When I was about 13 my auntie bought me an Ultima II make up kit. It was huge and had everything and I loved it. Still remember the lipsticks in their pale green cases

Best shampoo ever, and sweets in the parcels. The man who set it up then set up Lush, which is crap.
pinnerpearl · 26/11/2021 19:35

Not make up, but I loved Goya’s Aqua Manda in the 70s, orange and brown bottles. Then they brought out a perfume called Meadowsweet with brilliant packaging, sky blue with meadow flowers, gorgeous, it wasn’t around for long though.

Bertiebiscuit · 26/11/2021 20:17

Also Mary Quant - used to make the most gorgeous gold flecked translucent face powder in a fabulous black compact with the daisy logo on it - I would sell my soul for one, have never found anything half so good since it was discontinued

Pinotpleasure · 26/11/2021 20:31

I didn’t know that Almay and Covergirl cosmetics were/are unavailable in the UK these days. I was living in the US until a couple of years ago and my local ‘personal care’ store sold these brands.

In fact, they still sell Almay and Covergirl products:

www.harmonfacevalues.com

OTOH I’ve never seen Max Factor cosmetics in the USA. I think the market is dominated by Maybelline and Revlon as most supermarkets sell at least their mascaras.

My favourite is Bobbi Brown but it seems you can only find it in very few department stores (none near me in Dorset) or online.....but part of the enjoyment of buying cosmetics is to use the testers to see what suits best!

freddiemed · 27/11/2021 00:04

Ruby and Millie lipsticks were fab
Sensiq eye shadows and foundation, I used to think they were well posh with the fancy packaging Smile
Miss Selfridge lipsticks, all really bright - Doris Karloff was a good one

@Jacaranda75 Was this B never too busy to be beautiful, by any chance? It was owned by Lush. www.musingsofamuse.com/2011/09/b-never-too-busy-to-be-beautiful-holiday-catalog-photos.html
rosyvalentine · 27/11/2021 00:17

Didn't read the full thread! I see now that it was Pout Smile

Blueberrycreampie · 27/11/2021 01:02

Used to wear Max Factor Strawberry Meringue lipstick in the 60s then graduated to Mary Quant Prune Crush, while wearing Aqua Manda perfume. This is bringing back so many memories.

sotty6 · 27/11/2021 01:07

Virgin Vie was amazing

Tottie · 27/11/2021 01:47

Yes I totally agree with you, SirVixofVixHall, about Lush being crap. I can't go into any of the shops without feeling like I'm going to pass out from the smell and the bicarb that hovers in the air.
I got some great stuff from CTG though.

notacooldad · 27/11/2021 09:23

Was it Cosmetics To Go that dud subscription ser ice in tbe early 90s.
Products used to come each month in a brown cardboard barrel with shredded tissue. It used to be bath bombs and lotions!
If it wasnt CTG who was it?

Irismarle · 27/11/2021 11:06

I remember buying Germaine Monteil foundation back in the late 60s when I was a student. It was crazily expensive considering my budget then but I bought it as I’d read it was what the models like Twiggy used. It was excellent but got used up quickly.

pomers · 27/11/2021 12:14

Corn silk, made the skin look amazing

Pupa. I think it was quite expensive and came in a bright red case

Leichner, this may still be available as they make stage make up. My personal favourite

WrinklesShminkles · 27/11/2021 13:16

I'm pretty sure Pupa are still going - try Googling Pupa Milano.

GreenVaseline · 27/11/2021 14:44

Neal's Yard briefly did makeup a few years ago. I still have three of their lipsticks and two lip glosses. Really wearable, flattering colours.
