Rude man made me hate an outfit I was proud of

Bit crap with clothes, generally in running kit or jeans and shirt (wfh fulltime). Today taking Dd 13 Christmas shopping I thought I would dress up (for me) so wore white shirt with frilly collar, red cord dungarees www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/playsuits-jumpsuits/burgundy-cord-dungaree-crop-jumpsuit/p/802092667 and boots.
Having lunch I got up and walked past a table where a man said ‘Excuse me, you’ve got a tag hanging down the back of your dress’. Me (mortified) ‘Oh how embarrassing! Thanks for telling me!’ Pull off tag ASAP and shove in bin. Man: ‘It is embarrassing to have paid that much for that dress.’
Just walked away but felt shit all day. Was it a terrible outfit? FWIW I am a size 10 and flat chested.

What a fucker! Angry And I never swear! What an absolute cheek! Raging for you. Please dismiss him as the pathetic person he is.

ambereeree · 14/11/2021 08:25

I bet you looked lovely OP. Sounds like you met a right miserable old sod.

NancyIris · 14/11/2021 08:26

@Chocolatecoatedkettlebell see shirt.
You have all really cheered me up. Yesterday was thinking this was going straight on eBay but relenting now.

I like that style of jumpsuit and the blouse is great with it. I mean that isa fucking socioopathic thing to say to someone what a weirdo.

SnaccidentsHappen · 14/11/2021 08:31

Similar story, happened to someone I know. She was out for drinks and some guy started shouting across the room,

excuse me, excuse me?

Did you that from M&S?

Yes!

Well the tags still on it and it's hanging out, haha!

She was mortified, why not just come up and quietly point it out. Rather than shouting across the room full of people.

Not all men are arseholes, but a lot of them are!

SnowyPetals · 14/11/2021 08:31

He is probably used to nobody caring about his opinion (why would they when he comes out with such tripe?) so has to say ridiculous things to get attention.

EdgeOfTheSky · 14/11/2021 08:34

Why judge yourself against the opinions of people with no standards? And let such people ruin your day?

Theimpossiblegirl · 14/11/2021 08:34

Stop overthinking your outfit. It sounds lovely.
He was rude and out of order.
What a tosser.

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 14/11/2021 08:36

That is a great combo, love it! Please don’t sell the dungarees. Before he said what he said I bet you felt really good, refreshed from breaking away from your norm and above all super comfy.
Agree with the negging point above.
If you had worn that outfit loads before and had loads of compliments you would have seen his comment in a different light.

GroggyLegs · 14/11/2021 08:41

Would he have said that if it was a man with a £100 tag hanging off his jeans?

Course he wouldn't.
He's a entitled bully.

Thankfully you never have to see him again. His poor family however... Chin up OP.

Benjispruce5 · 14/11/2021 08:46

Ugh “It’s embarrassing to be such a twat!”

Atozofpoodles · 14/11/2021 08:48

What vile creature. Nasty, do not give it a send thought.

NotQuiteUsual · 14/11/2021 08:51

Classic negging. Can't stand to see someone having a nice time and feeling good about themselves. I'd wish ill on him, but it sounds like life already did enough of that.

Beaconoflight · 14/11/2021 08:51

He was being a dick, I bet you looked great in it please dont let that twat make you feel bad. He is just a random idiot !

Sidehustle99 · 14/11/2021 08:53

What was he wearing, this policer of fashion? And who was he with/trying to impress? Really hope he wasn't with any kids.

I would just have said something like 'Oh thank you wise one, your advanced years and superior knowledge are appreciated. I will go home immediately and don something cheap and Lacy AF so as not to offend your rummy eyes' or just 'Fuck off' would have done.

Honestly what a C U next Tuesday.

FWIW I think that's a really cute outfit.

dudsville · 14/11/2021 08:54

That's truly a fab outfit, and newlook is fast selling out of those dungarees all because an idiot made a fashion forward woman seconds guess herself and link to them on the Internet!

ambereeree · 14/11/2021 08:55

New look has some lovely stuff. If I was slim chested I would love to wear those dungarees.

LynetteScavo · 14/11/2021 08:57

I would have asked "why is it embarrassing?" It would have come straight out because in genuinely don't know- was he thinking it's a lot or too little? I personally would pay from £5 - £75 for something like that so I genuinely don't know what he was meaning.

If it was a very smart restaurant, surely the patrons would have more class than to comment on the price someone's new look outfit, unless they were mentally unwell?

Or was he a gown and out saying it was expensive?

I genuinely would have just asked him, and teen DD would have laughed at him.

Nomorefuckstogive · 14/11/2021 08:58

I’ve started letting people know they’re being rude, if they are. ‘How rude!’ or ‘What bad manners!’ in a Hyacinth Bucket (I’m oldish) voice often does the trick. Why do men STILL feel they can make comments on women’s appearance? Think I might try, ‘What an old-fashioned thing to say!’ next time.

Howshouldibehave · 14/11/2021 09:00

If he thought those (lovely) dungarees were a dress, then I would disregard his opinion completely.

Absolutely this!

Yamaya · 14/11/2021 09:02

I really love your outfit, tempted to get it myself.

Sparklfairy · 14/11/2021 09:05

"I really don't think YOU are in a position to be giving style advice..."

Honestly what is wrong with people. So rude!

Friendofdennis · 14/11/2021 09:05

He doesn’t know anything What an idiot Don’t allow his nasty words to take root in your head.

Myonlysunshine123 · 14/11/2021 09:07

Those dungarees are lovely, nice colour too. I would love to wear dungarees but too much boobs/belly here. They always look nice on slimmer people. Just watched a series with Anna friel in and she wore work dungarees and still managed to look cute/funky..I would look like a Mario bro.

SavoyCabbage · 14/11/2021 09:07

They are lovely!
