Rude man made me hate an outfit I was proud of

Bit crap with clothes, generally in running kit or jeans and shirt (wfh fulltime). Today taking Dd 13 Christmas shopping I thought I would dress up (for me) so wore white shirt with frilly collar, red cord dungarees www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/playsuits-jumpsuits/burgundy-cord-dungaree-crop-jumpsuit/p/802092667 and boots.
Having lunch I got up and walked past a table where a man said ‘Excuse me, you’ve got a tag hanging down the back of your dress’. Me (mortified) ‘Oh how embarrassing! Thanks for telling me!’ Pull off tag ASAP and shove in bin. Man: ‘It is embarrassing to have paid that much for that dress.’
Just walked away but felt shit all day. Was it a terrible outfit? FWIW I am a size 10 and flat chested.

And what was he wearing?

Honestly, forget it ever happened.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 13/11/2021 23:46

“Well, we don’t all look stupid naturally. Some of us have to pay for it”

blacksax · 13/11/2021 23:48

I find the phrase "Oh fuck off" comes in handy on occasions like this.

IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel · 13/11/2021 23:52

"Hilarious...my....sides.....are..... splitting...." And then collapse on the floor. That's the first comeback that comes to mind! 😁
Not really, he doesn't deserve one, especially because his small mind can't tell the difference between a dress and dungarees!

Djifunrsn · 13/11/2021 23:52

He just sounds like an idiotic fool. Try not to let this type of twat upset you.

thedaythemusicdied · 13/11/2021 23:57

I'm finding this thread confusing. Why did he say it was a dress?

I can't work out how those dungarees work with boots, did you tuck them in?

TuftyRusty · 14/11/2021 00:00

When people do things like this I always say it reflects so much more on them than you - he’s a horrible person. It doesn’t say anything about you, your outfit or anything else.

FlickerBeat · 14/11/2021 00:01

I’d have told him to fuck right off! Cheeky twat.

Callixte · 14/11/2021 00:02

Those look like they're well made and nice fabric, too - real cotton corduroy isn't cheap. If he thinks £28 is overpriced for those, perhaps it's his first time going outside since the 1960s? That would explain having forgotton what a dress is, too.

Happymum12345 · 14/11/2021 00:02

What a strange thing for him to have said. Was he saying it in a jokey way-although obviously not funny? I only wondered this because he must have been quite close to you to be able to read the price.
People are odd & rude.

NancyIris · 14/11/2021 00:03

I guess he couldn’t tell the difference. They are quite wide legged and a bit like a pinafore. I wore tights under and ankle boots. Was an inch or two gap before dungarees. Maybe would have looked better with trainers.

gofg · 14/11/2021 00:05

If he thinks dungarees are a dress then I would consider he knows zilch about clothing and would just ignore him. Honestly OP, he's not worth the headspace you are giving this. Your opinion of how you look is the only one that matters.

Italiangreyhound · 14/11/2021 00:10

Very stupid man, don't let him bother you. It looks great.

Smile
EstuaryBird · 14/11/2021 00:10

I don’t get so many comments now I’m older but I always used to say..’Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t realise when I got dressed that I was answerable to you for my choices’. Can easily be adjusted to cover hair colour/style, weight, whatever men decide they need to advise us about.

BurntO · 14/11/2021 00:11

I don’t even need to see the outfit to tell you he is a dick. Fuck him Smile

WorraLiberty · 14/11/2021 00:11

It doesn't matter whether anyone here thinks it's a terrible outfit.

He was rude and that's that. Don't let him put you off wearing it.

SpookyPumpkinPants · 14/11/2021 00:11

A bloke that doesn't know the difference between dungarees & a dress, is a man whose opinion counts for Jack shit!

A bloke who think £30 is a lot to pay for a dress or dungarees is not someone whose opinion you should be giving a single shit about!

I'd love to wear dungarees, but I'm 52, under 5ft & fat... I look like teletubby or a toddler. Not quite the look I'd be going for!!

I'm sure they look fab on you!

GuiltyAsChargedYrHonour · 14/11/2021 00:13

"Well, thank you for sharing your opinion, random stranger."

CheeseMmmm · 14/11/2021 00:13

Often men are nasty to women they think look good. Bring them down a peg or 2.

Yes these men are nasty to everyone I just wanted to point out that it could be because he thought you looked good.

Doodledeedum · 14/11/2021 00:17

For a start he called it a dress. He knows fuck all. I wouldn't take it personally. He is a tool.

WorraLiberty · 14/11/2021 00:17

I don't think I've ever seen or heard a man being nasty to a random woman because he thinks she looks good.

Sadly, I've witnessed many women doing this to other women though.

Changechangychange · 14/11/2021 00:18

If he thinks £30 is a lot to spend on a dress, he either finds an unbelievable number of bargains in the charity shop sale bins, or his mum still buys all his clothes for him.

Either way, ignore.

fruitpastille · 14/11/2021 00:18

Much more embarrassing to have such bad manners.

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 14/11/2021 00:19

What an absolute prick. Some people just get off on putting other people down, so nasty.

Don't give him a second thought.

CecilieRose · 14/11/2021 00:22

He's just a sad bitter man who can't stand to see a woman being happy. I think the dungarees look great and actually I'm now considering buying some for myself!
