Dated make up

I'm really confused. On another thread people said wearing eyeliner on the undereye was dated. I wear brown or copper normally around halfway across my eye. I don't want to look like a teenager but is this really dated? What do other people do.
(PS I'm low maintenance so no complicated cat eye type things will work for me!)

I know someone who hasn't changed her make up or hairstyle since the 80's and she does the black eyeliner under the eye thing. It does look very very dated.

TackyJewellery · 17/10/2021 09:22

I think it entirely depends on eye shape and face shape. I tried doing the cat eye on the upper lid before but on me, it just looks like drag makeup. I use a very smudgy light taupe pencil on my bottom lashes only and it seems to just balance my face better.

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 09:23

I have a toddler full time so don't really have time for consultations. To be honest I find make up artists do such heavy make up it looks fake and my husband hates it. Myself I prefer a natural look.

I may look into getting my eyelashes Permed and my lower lashes dyed for Christmas though. I used to do that post baby and as someone with piss poor eyelashes, it's the only way to do big eyelashes trend.

I think make up trends are changing so fast at the minute. I wore the same make up for most of my twenties and never felt out of fashion.

I went out for my first gig since the pandemic the other week with highlighter and blusher on and felt like my auntie must've felt when she was still wearing blue eyeshadow and mascara way after the 80s had ended! I really felt like it marked me out as 'old' but I don't know how else to do my makeup; I might have to take a trip to Mac for a refresher lesson!

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 09:28

Oh no! What are people doing instead of blush and highlight? I literally just got new ones.

OP the 90s are back IN so crack on and stick on some "mom jeans" whilst your at it because skinnies are out

ohfook · 17/10/2021 09:32

I just felt like everyone looked sort of more natural with a focus on brows and lashes and the blusher and highlighter made me look too 'made up' if that makes sense. Basically naturally nice skin (which I know is just good make up) vs a bit too much effort!

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 09:36

Yes I saw flares and bootleg are back in(I have been wearing them years anyway because they suit me)
Sadly irony of irony I put on so much weight after little one, I only fit into my more generous leggings!

I'm mid 40s and that style of eyeliner really suits my eye shape. I use brown instead of black eyeliner on the top lashes though and under lower lashes I smudge brown eyeshadow which gives definition but looks less dated. I don't wear mascara on my lower lashes and this makes me look more balanced. It also makes my eyes a focus and distracts from the fact my brows were over plucked in the 90s and have never fully recovered. I don't really wear much other make up, no highlighter or foundation. In the depths of winter I might use cream blush on my cheekbones or a sweep of bronzer on them. It lifts ny face but doesn't jump out that I'm wearing anything if that makes sense. I have switched from lipstick to lipgloss as it's more forgiving and worked on improving my skincare routine. Subtle changes but it looks fresher and more modern without being too trend driven.

@keepmoving

Have you thought about getting an appointment in a store to get some new ideas? MAC, NARS, Laura Mercier etc and most Space NK stores employ trained make up artists who should be able to offer educated advice.

Makeup can help you look and feel a little brighter, a little less tired (in my case). There will always be trends around and then there are classic looks that are timeless.

Most of all make sure it's something you're comfortable with.

@keepmoving I've had a few make up tutorials from 'artists' in stores and not once was I impressed with the results Grin

Nice skin can be just youth as well though. Never for me, unfortunately, but for others, sure.
I wear liquid blush and highlight. Not sure if that is subtle enough to feel not dated.

Starting to think my no male up look over lockdown was much more on trend haha!

have switched from lipstick to lipgloss

Lipgloss also deemed dated on the other thread. Not sure if it was the colour or texture being condemned as dated.

But guess who just got a new gloss😂

Perhaps it is dated if you’re holding it to recent trends but I think if you’ve found your signature makeup look it doesn’t matter what’s ‘on trend’! I love a slight cat eye flick in my eyeliner, technically not on trend but it really suits my eyes and I don’t look like myself without it!

Bluntness100 · 17/10/2021 09:51

I think it tends to make people’s eyes look smaller ans the eyes look much more open when the lower eye isn’t lined. It is quite dated

However I wear upper lid liner, it makes my lashes look thicker, and for awhile everyone was saying that was dated.

It’s difficult to move away from something you’ve always done as you look different,

As for the image above, I don’t think it is doctored I think it’s just it’s a stark difference when you don’t do it,

StormyCornishSeas · 17/10/2021 09:56

@Leftbutcameback a blue base lipstick sounds all kinds of awful. But thanks for the tip and off to google Grin

Beautybunny · 17/10/2021 10:00

Trained make up artist here and 55 shock, horror. On a natural face I would recommend shadow under lashes but only in neutral shades. Use a brush not a thick sponge aapplicator. If you wear a bright lipstick you only need a neutral eye shadow and mascara. Remember the brow bone doesn't age so i a little highlighter lifts the face (Bobbi Brown do a pink brick)

Interesting. I've always found it makes my eyes stand out in a good way. Though I do have big eyes so maybe any shrinkage doesn't show as much.

Use a brush not a thick sponge aapplicator.

Those sponge things look a bit like sex toys to me. Unfortunately I can't handle a brush. All my makeup is applied with fingers so I work with eyeshadow cream which I don't think would work for that.

My husband can testify for many a night out being an hour late because I ballsed up powered male up that it just doesn't work for me.

Really great to have this discussion with women of the same age as me! I find that if I take selfies when I'm made up that's a really useful tool to tell me what works. The camera (esp in good daylight) is much more truthful than my flattering mirror I use to do make up. Mind you, it did have the beauty filter turned on as default so that was a shock when I realised!

madmomma · 17/10/2021 10:07

beautybunny when you say highlight the brow bone, do you mean just above the brow, or below it? Thanks.

BelleOfTheProvince · 17/10/2021 10:08

Yes, just tried no under eye line and it looks like I'm wearing no makeup/makes my nose look huge. Is that why contouring came back in?
For reference contouring scares the shit out of me.

I'm so rubbish at make up I just had to Google what the brow bone is.
For those as clueless as me:

Dated make up

It’s very dated, and unflattering.

A little bit of shadow under they eye is much better.

Even Kate Middleton has been persuaded away from her heavy handed eye liner and she looks much better for it.

Anonymice1 · 17/10/2021 10:27

I’ve got fair skin and love Glossier gel blush in dusk. It is so easy to use, you basically can’t go wrong (my daughter gave it to me 😂)

And instead of lip gloss I really like Fresh caramel lip balm (also from daughter)!

JinglingHellsBells · 17/10/2021 10:27

I think this is a bit debatable.
My DD and her friends- all very young and fashionable- all use liner on their lower lids. Not black but usually mid brown etc.

I use dark brown liner and smudge it.

Sometimes I use a dark brown eye shadow with a really think eyeliner brush- think it's Benefit- which gives a softer look.
