I know this isn't a good angle but is the outfit that bad?
Someone told me it was

Is this outfit awful?

@isthisawful

Wow! What a response. Thank you everyone. I wore it for just pottering about. I'd just walked to the local shop which is why I had the jacket on. It was my partner who said awful. He hardly ever comments on my clothes, and very rarely negatively , so it really stood out when he did on this.
I would love it if my bloke told me the truth now and again but he would not dare to :)
MayorGoodwaysChicken · 11/10/2021 15:12

I’ve put my finger on what’s strange to me about it - it’s fundamentally smart clothes (shirt, structured jacket) but worn in a non-smart way (crumpled, not the right shoes). If you’re pottering and dressing casually surely you wear more comfortable things like leggings and a jumper, which can be worn very casually but still look appropriate and slightly stylish? To me, a jacket like that doesn’t say casual pottering clothes.

darklindor · 11/10/2021 15:13

If I wore that, DH would blink and ask why I was dressed up.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 11/10/2021 15:15

I quite like it. It’s preppy but relaxed. I’d probably wear slimmer legged jeans though.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/10/2021 15:15

I quite like it. Smarter than I am pottering about for sure.

EllaPaella · 11/10/2021 15:18

It isn't awful and individually there is a lot to like. With the looser leg jeans I would go with a more fitted shirt and tank top and the jeans could do with being a bit shorter. It doesn't flow as well it could as an outfit but it's not awful and that's a very unkind thing to say.

CrazyCatStory · 11/10/2021 15:18

I like it.

Skyeheather · 11/10/2021 15:19

Yes - the jacket is awful, looks like something from the 1980's. The blue shirt doesn't go with the beige jumper and the shirt needs ironing. I think a fitted shirt and tighter fitting jumper would look better.

Jackthementalkitten · 11/10/2021 15:20

I love the shirt and jeans together, you have a great figure btw. If you liked it and were comfortable- sod what anyone else thinks.

YouokHun · 11/10/2021 15:22

I’m not a fan of partners policing physical appearance including clothes, or giving unasked for critiques, especially if they are using terms like “awful’ (perhaps that’s just the word you’re using @isthisawful). You like it so go ahead and wear it!

I am going to assume your DH has the looks of George Clooney and the dress sense of Brian Ferry? If that’s the case then let him off just this once but if he’s criticising you while wearing M&S Blue Harbour for men and plastic shoes (or a variation) then you’re going to have to tell him off properly.

The only other caveat is if you do what I do which is canvas an opinion from my DH (with insistence) on an outfit, ask for honesty and then ignore the honesty if it isn’t what I want to hear, because he knows nothing about these things! He gets very nervous about this scenario and usual wheels out the colour blind excuse.

Famousinlove · 11/10/2021 15:24

It looks like the sort of outfit you see on the before part of a makeover show

isthismylifenow · 11/10/2021 15:26

Do you have a huge whopper diamond ring OP? Smile

I don't think the outfit it's awful for as you describe pottering about. I look a lot worse then you do in my pottering about clothes.

Is it a different style to what you would usually wear. When I was married I don't think my ex even noticed anything I was wearing.

BabycakesMatlala · 11/10/2021 15:27

Bless you, OP - each individual item actually really good (bar the jacket 😬), and I suspect you normally have very good taste, but this is not a great ensemble. Never mind, I'm sure no one died from you wearing down the shop!

LowlandLucky · 11/10/2021 15:28

Not awful but not great, too many layers on top, stick to 2

GiveMeNovocain · 11/10/2021 15:28

I hope you provide constructive criticism on all his outfits from now on. What you're wearing is absolutely fine for pottering around the shops.

To me looks great. It looks comfy & like wearer is confident in own skin.

Bit plain for a wedding or a nightclub, I suppose, but not objectionable.

Malin52 · 11/10/2021 15:33

@suspiria777

it's scruffy, too baggy/ill fitting, and the jeans are unfashionably dark (current style is stonewash, not indigo!)
Agree. Jeans are a very dated colour and shape. Shirt is too big/rumpled. Jumper lost any shape it had about 200 washes ago and looks a million years old. I love the jacket but it's clearly also too big.

On the other hand 'pottering' round the house clothes, or off for a country walk clothes to me are anything that covers your body in a comfortable way, is weather/terrain appropriate and shouldn't be dissected by the fashion police.

I'd agree though that if you wore it thinking it was a great outfit then sorry it looks terrible.

diddl · 11/10/2021 15:41

So it's jeans, shirt & jumper & then you put trainers & a jacket on to go out?

Love the jacket, not keen on the trainers.

Not so much that I'd notice though!

You might have a fab figure Op.

You're not obliged to wear stuff to show it off all the time/ever!

TertiusLydgate · 11/10/2021 15:43

It’s quite dreary and droopy, I’m afraid.

tolerable · 11/10/2021 15:48

if..immediate required/obtained from male corpse/stole bag from clothesbank....Its..ok.otherwise. Yeah-pretty awful if actual choice

isthisawful · 11/10/2021 15:49

The reason I scribbled my Gand out is because I gave pretty awful and recognisable hands. Nothing more exciting than that.

I'm amazed at the response. Thank you everyone. I don't think I'll wear that combination again. The tank top is new so I don't want to dump it. I'll try it with something else.

Newusernamelalala · 11/10/2021 15:51

It’s not awful, it’s not great. It’s fine. The shirt could do with an iron and that’s it

chaosmaker · 11/10/2021 15:53

As long as you like it, it doesn't matter what the commenter thinks about it at all.
