For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

legs or boobs.
don't mix metals
blue and green should never be seen
if wearing leggings, your bum should be covered.

the rest i couldn't give a stuff about.
i live in black leggings with coloured tops or dresses. i wear trainers constantly (or converse) and i have long, dyed hair (i'm over 40)

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 16:48

The skinny jeans people are taking news of their death well. It's like the mourning that went on when Rudolph Valentino died back in '26. I remember it well...

OakPine · 05/10/2021 16:49

Don't wear green shoes, especially suede.
Elf.

TroysMammy · 05/10/2021 16:49

@Neveratruerfriend I have found my person. I will also add my opinion on grey joggers they look as if the person wearing them has been in prison or on remand and people who wear them have given up with life.

AndOtherStories · 05/10/2021 16:54

I love a pretty bra strap but never a visible bra! So, I'd wear a patterned bra with visible strap under a black top but never under a white one

100% - esp if it's obvious that person has never jogged the length of themselves.

starfishmummy · 05/10/2021 16:55

@Redcrayons

It was Blue and green should never be seen in my day.

Thank you!! Yes!!!!! Me too.

I remember arguing with DH who claimed it was red and green because you never see red and green together on traffic lights!! I had started to doubt myself

TaraR2020 · 05/10/2021 16:56

Don't wear red or all-black or all-white to a wedding.

Dress soberly for a funeral - unless specifically invited to dress differently by those close to the deceased, of course - it's not a fashion parade

IfNot · 05/10/2021 16:58

I also find the trend of men wearing trousers and loafers with trainer socks so wrong as to be actually upsetting. Warm your fucking ankles, man!
Oh yes. I have to send DP out of the room when we watch First Dates, he gets so upset by the sockless men.

My rules, wherever they came from (some of them possibly Trinny and Susannah):
No black bottoms with solid colour top BUT yes to black top and coloured botttoms..
No white shoes or trainers after August 31st, it looks unseasonal and wrong
No non-leather shoes or bags. My granny drummed this into my mum, who drummed it into me. Shoes and bags can be dear, because they must last. Ditto coats.
Midi dresses/skirts must be worn with a heel of some sort.
Those slinky viscosy dresses that cling need a slip or some kind of lining.
No earrings AND necklace-one or the other.

I will defend my rules to the death.

@HappyDays101010

For some reason I am really tickled by Wear Pearl stud earrings to widen your smile - like they're supposed to look like extra teeth, or something Grin
me too
JudgeJ · 05/10/2021 17:00

@MorrisZapp

Red and green should never be seen
Even in the Christmas season, burn the ghastly jumpers!
TaraR2020 · 05/10/2021 17:00

@JaniceBattersby

I remember Jennifer Aniston saying back in the day in Cosmo that in order to maintain a neat brow you should never pluck more than three eyebrow hairs in a single session else you’d end up with no eyebrows.

Reader, Jen was correct.

When did Jen Aniston last pluck her own eyebrows?!
JeffVaderneedsatray · 05/10/2021 17:05

If wearing leggings bums must be covered.
No bare shoulders at work or church. (I don't know why but I stick to the rule at all times)
No visible underwear.

That's my lot for fashion rules I think.
(Unless you count my insistence on wearing ankle length skirts and dresses but this is largely so I don't have to shave my legs (I don't/can't wear tights)

RicherThanYew · 05/10/2021 17:10

As the Queen (Latifah) once told us, if it's clean and it fits I'm wearing it.

godmum56 · 05/10/2021 17:11

@StarlightLady

My golden rules. Never knock others (or worse still refer to them with negative names) because they adopt a different style to you.
this definitely
JudgeJ · 05/10/2021 17:16

@HermioneAndRoger

My mum always said that wearing navy and black together makes you look like you got dressed in the dark.

It can work if you have a very blue navy and a very black black but it is tricky to pull off.

I once went to work wearing a blue and a black shoe for precisely that reason, it was dark! Seemed such a good idea at the time to buy three pairs of the same style, black, brown and very dark blue.
Ourlady · 05/10/2021 17:17

@Magicpaintbrush

That winter coats should have buttons - what is this sudden craze I'm seeing everywhere of winter coats with no buttons at all or one puny button? What is the actual point???? I want a proper coat that I can button up from neck to foof that will keep out the cold!!!!!!!!!
neck to foof 🤣 I want neck to knees at least.

And yes to the bum covering legging attire although I do get a wee bit of envy when I see all the pert bottoms on full show.
Not so much the sanfairyann area.
Camel toe is not a pretty sight!

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 05/10/2021 17:18

I think if bra straps are going to show, they should look like they are intended to show...so a bright colour, frilly decoration....somthing that confirms its deliberate.

I'd agree with this, although I'd never do it myself, I was brought up with the "underwear is never seen" mantra.

I dealt with the "shoes and handbag should/shoudn't match" by purchasing a handbag in bright pink, more latterly replaced with one that is a muted red. I cannot be bothered with swapping the contents of a handbag, and I didn't want people to think that I matched some days and not others; so I went for a completely different colour Grin

I didn't know that you shouldn't wear colours with black. I live in black jeans.

Sleeplessem · 05/10/2021 17:24

@duffed

trousers and leggings must cover ankles

Was bullied terribly for wearing 'ankle swingers' in secondary school, and can't understand how this has become fashionable.

Noooooo, i love an ankle grazer
Corrag · 05/10/2021 17:24

No non-leather shoes or bags. My granny drummed this into my mum, who drummed it into me. Shoes and bags can be dear, because they must last.

I had this drummed into me as well. If you spend on shoes and bags you can get away with cheaper clothes. But a cheap bag or shoes will make expensive clothes look cheap.

RoSEbuds6 · 05/10/2021 17:25

I always thought it was, "blue and green should never be seen except upon an Irish Queen".
I still adhere to a lot of Trinny and Susannah rules, especially the 'black with a colour' ban, but I may reconsider that now I've read this.

entropynow · 05/10/2021 17:26

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

Black trousers shouldn't be worn with a brightly coloured top. As said by Trinny and Susannah back in ye dayes of yore. The early 00's.
Really? WTF else are they for, then?
entropynow · 05/10/2021 17:31

Well, I'm pleased to say I have broken every single one of the above 'rules' [many of them at the same timeGrin ] and I look and feel fabulous every day.

So, 'wear what you like' is my only guide.

GoingOutOutNEVER · 05/10/2021 17:31

@DeJaDont

My teeth itch when I see a woman, any age- wearing trainers and a skirt or dress. A skirt isn't sports wear!! Just NO!!
You’ll teeth will itch with me ..skirts/dresses with leggings sometimes 3/4 leggings, with socks on show (always odd ones) and trainers. Comfy and me

I have got several earring necklace sets designed to be worn together...also i hate to see empty earring holes on posh occasions
