For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

Don't wear navy and black. Don't wear close fitting on both tops and bottoms, don't wear low cut top with revealing bottom half.

BodgertheJogger · 05/10/2021 17:40

I knew girls a few years older than me that wore clear bra straps with sequins 'floating in them'. I longed for them and after googling I haven't had barely any results. Does anyone know what I mean??

LowlandLucky · 05/10/2021 17:43

My bootcut jeans are staying and i don't care if i look like a 90s throw back in my short checked skirt with thick tights or a long summer skirt, white tshirt and denim jacket. its got to be better than my wellies and barbour look that i wear nearly every day

daisyjgrey · 05/10/2021 17:45

@2bazookas

Rules? There are rules? Nobody told us. We wear what the hell we like.

Finally!

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 05/10/2021 17:49

I happily break most rules but:

  1. Never wear any clothing the same colour as your skin
  1. Never wear any clothing with a picture of someone more attractive than you on it
cheesegloriouscheeseyum · 05/10/2021 17:50

@PaddleBoardingMomma

Very dated and not very feminist but... if you're going for a low cut too wear a longer length on your legs, and if you're going short on the legs wear a higher neckline... never boobs and legs out together 😂 (I'm just jealous I can't get away with it without looking like "mutton dressed as lamb" horrible phrase but still!)
Yes definitely this one. Either bold eyes or bold lips, not both. Earings and necklace should not match / be a matching set.
cheesegloriouscheeseyum · 05/10/2021 17:52

@AngelicaElizaAndPeggy

Never buy leggings that match your skin tone.
Oh dear god yes this one. I've done so many double-takes recently where I really thought the woman was naked from the waist down Blush
PuzzledObserver · 05/10/2021 17:54

Underwear is not meant to be visible. The clue is in the name.

ViceLikeBlip · 05/10/2021 17:54

I love a denim jacket and a cowboy boot, and I still think I look like Christina Aguilera.

Sandinyourshoes · 05/10/2021 17:55

No denim after 40 rule - I’m still in it in my 60s. Maybe even double denim as it seems to be making a comeback, used to wear double denim a lot in the 90s.
Shoes shouldn’t be paler than legs - white shoes actually make my legs look less pale - not that I wear skirts anymore, but with cropped/ankle skimmer jeans (known as half mast before cropped became fashionable).
I refuse to buy cardis with no buttons which seems to be a trend.
(Often wonder why in the likes of Tesco and Asda, where all my shopping until recently, the only real leather was in the mens section, and women had PU belts and other material or textile shoes? And the mens joggers are more comfy?)

Howareyouflower · 05/10/2021 17:57

The saying is actually "Blue and Green should never be seen"
and I think it continues with something like "Except with another in between"
Red and green are lovely together!

justasking111 · 05/10/2021 17:58

@hamstersarse

Totally agree re leggings OP

Some awful sights

My eyeliner is obsolete yet still I continue

You seen Adele today? 😂😂
shrugshrug · 05/10/2021 18:02

@RoSEbuds6
I heard it being said "Blue and green can never be seen except, perhaps on an Irish colleen." (cailín - girl in the Irish language )

TheSilveryPussycat · 05/10/2021 18:07

Old hippy here. I hate skinny jeans (though I have never tried any on, I must confess). In the 50s they were called drainpipe trousers, and worn by teddy boys.

justasking111 · 05/10/2021 18:10

@DeJaDont

My teeth itch when I see a woman, any age- wearing trainers and a skirt or dress. A skirt isn't sports wear!! Just NO!!
Me too 😂

If only my grandmother were still here to put us straight! She'd be sporting a hat (always worn) and gloves (always worn) and a scarf and brooch. Lipstick and powder only. Anything else would be OTT.

IntermittentParps · 05/10/2021 18:13

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

Black trousers shouldn't be worn with a brightly coloured top. As said by Trinny and Susannah back in ye dayes of yore. The early 00's.
This one is mine. I am also still in skinnies.
FlibbertyGibbitt · 05/10/2021 18:15

Red shoes no nickers apparently! 🤣

pompomsgalore · 05/10/2021 18:16

@MorrisZapp

Red and green should never be seen
I've always thought it was 'blue and green should never be seen except with something inbetween'.
Rosesandblossoms · 05/10/2021 18:19

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

Can't be doing with visible bra straps or even worse, dresses/skirts that are longer than your coat.
Mum, is that you Grin
justasking111 · 05/10/2021 18:22

Red toenails indicated a tart I was told once.
Long scarves in the winter are out of fashion but so warm in the winter. I wear gloves too must have half a dozen pairs . Hate cold cars and suspect germ ridden supermarket trolleys.

Still have long hair and it's grey with white streaks now.
Won't give up the eyeliner because I have always worn glasses so like to emphasise them.

Like jeggings rather than leggings they're warmer

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 18:23

I always have red toenails and am fond of tarty misbehaviour.

LaBellina · 05/10/2021 18:24

I’m a super tart all year round

My grandmother was of the opinion that make up and painted toenails were for prostitutes which just goes to show how times change.
Thomasina79 · 05/10/2021 18:29

Please don’t shout (runs for cover), but for me being, ahem, an over 50 I feel skirts should be at least under the knees and sleeves should be at least three quarter length.
