For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

@BoreOfWhabylon

All silver or all gold jewellery, never both together. Ditto boobs or legs, eyes or lips. Always match shoes and handbags. Gloves always worn whenever outdoors between Autumn and Spring. Preferably soft kid leather.
Seriously re gloves?! and matching shoes/handbags?

feels like I've stepped back in time.

@SirChenjins

According to DD(22) eyeliner under your eyes is dated, as is mascara on your bottom eyelashes. In eye make up terms I’m older than Yoda.
I topline as under eyes is supposedly ageing?
Smashingspinster · 05/10/2021 16:18

Similar to navy and black, was told to wear either brown or black, not both together. i like them together, although it does sound like it would be a bit drab.

Pigtailsandall · 05/10/2021 16:18

I wear a lot of black but after this thread I'm a little unclear what I can wear it with...
No black and colour
No black and brown
No black and navy

Personally I can't do plain black bottoms with a white top - I get a PTSD back to my student days when I moonlighted as a silver service waitress

Yogsgirl · 05/10/2021 16:20

I have my own rules

No visible underwear

Gonnagetgoing · 05/10/2021 16:21

@woodhill - depending what eyeliner you wear and how heavy the line then yes it can be ageing. I use a russet gold under eyes and another sort of grey/green one (Stila) too (not at same time) and both look really nice.

woodhill · 05/10/2021 16:21

@midsomermurderess

Trinny and Susannah had one, never wear colour with black, exceptions being white, grey, bitter chocolate. I think they were right. It looks like you are attending a 1980s Conservative Party Conference.
I guess it's easy to do though, I wore black Summer trousers with bright pink top but probably would stick to grey or white in Winter
ProfessionalWeirdo · 05/10/2021 16:23

I haven't RTFT so apologies if this has already been said, but I've always understood the rule to be "Blue and green should ne'er be seen without a colour in between." I should add that often wear blue and green together, with or without a different colour between them, and I've never had any problems.

Thanks. I will try a coloured brown one.

Mine does tend to smudge anyway

ClawedButler · 05/10/2021 16:23

I do have some rules that I apply to myself, but really couldn't give a tinker's cuss for what other people wear.

I can't bring myself to wear black, white or combination of black and white to a wedding.

I will bite anyone who tries to take my skinny jeans/jeggings away - if "no-one" is wearing them, while are places like New Look and Primark stuffed full of the buggers?

Also, I have very long hair despite being a grave-dodging 46.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 05/10/2021 16:23

@AngelicaElizaAndPeggy

Never buy leggings that match your skin tone.
Or bikini. When I was on holiday last week we were passing a beach on the bus and two ladies had just got out of the water. I thought one of them was skinny dipping! But it turned out she had a flesh coloured bikini on Grin
Echobelly · 05/10/2021 16:25

God yeah, I've had some double takes seeing people with flesh toned leggings Shock

SirChenjins · 05/10/2021 16:25

@woodhill - apparently so, and I agree that a heavy black eyeliner underneath is probably left to the young things, but a smudge underneath in a dark grey looks good imo (although what do I know - nothing, according to my horrible DCs)

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 16:26

I think liquid eyeliner on the lower waterline can look quite harsh on older eyes (and younger eyes tbh) but pencil liner or eyeshadow blended out under lower lid can look great.

DeJaDont · 05/10/2021 16:26

My teeth itch when I see a woman, any age- wearing trainers and a skirt or dress. A skirt isn't sports wear!! Just NO!!

Same here - too many student jobs in cafes and restaurants where black trousers or skirts and white shirts were the uniform.
woodhill · 05/10/2021 16:27

Aren't they just😀@SirChenjins

I can't see near/far half the time anyway

DrSeuss · 05/10/2021 16:28

Your underwear should be chosen to be invisible. It is pretty easy to get knickers that go under most styles and bras that are made to stay hidden. I notice that M&S now do nude bras in multiple skin tones.

Oh ditto - my eyesight is dreadful these days. Varifocals fgs - and conversations with friends about our varifocals Sad.
Standrewsschool · 05/10/2021 16:29

I don’t have bra straps showing either - it just wasn’t done back in the 70s/80s, and also the outline of the nipples shouldn’t be showing (thank goodness for T-shirt bras).

I never knew eyeliner was not a thing anymore - when did that happen (off to cancel my order of Avon glimmerstick)

Blue and green should never be seen… .

JaniceBattersby · 05/10/2021 16:33

I remember Jennifer Aniston saying back in the day in Cosmo that in order to maintain a neat brow you should never pluck more than three eyebrow hairs in a single session else you’d end up with no eyebrows.

Reader, Jen was correct.

XingMing · 05/10/2021 16:33

I break most of the colour combination rules, and I rather like grey, black and brown together... in fact I am wearing today: off black jeans, a very dark black brown cable knit gilet and a semi-sheer crinkly T shirt in grey, black, purple and tan, with grey boots. It is really rather chic.

And I like black and navy. Never red and green and I'm not keen on pink with green either... visible bra straps are permissible in neon colours (but not now I am 65). Pattern clashing used to be a no-no, but is currently en vogue.

From the USA, no white trousers after Labor Day. I break that rule too. Fashion 'rools' are made to be bent and subverted.

StarlightLady · 05/10/2021 16:34

My golden rules. Never knock others (or worse still refer to them with negative names) because they adopt a different style to you.

CBroads · 05/10/2021 16:45

Bootcut jeans/any other pants that aren't slim fit should not be a thing, unless you're in ABBA 😂 Skinny jeans forever!

HotMummaSummer · 05/10/2021 16:45

Tight top and lose skirt/ trousers or vice versa... Except when I was 18 and could pull off a bodycon dress Wink
Also legs out or boobs out, not both at once, unless I'm on holiday, then anything goes Grin
