For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

@PaddleBoardingMomma

Very dated and not very feminist but... if you're going for a low cut too wear a longer length on your legs, and if you're going short on the legs wear a higher neckline... never boobs and legs out together 😂 (I'm just jealous I can't get away with it without looking like "mutton dressed as lamb" horrible phrase but still!)
Oh I forgot this one. Legs or tits, not both.
shrugshrug · 05/10/2021 15:32

I always thought it was blue and green should never be seen but I think navy and green are a lovely combination.

I've read on Mumsnet that bag and shoe colour shouldn't match.
Too matchy matchy 🙄🙄🙄

Definitely agree re wearing something covering your bum when wearing leggings.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/10/2021 15:32

All silver or all gold jewellery, never both together. Ditto boobs or legs, eyes or lips.
Always match shoes and handbags.
Gloves always worn whenever outdoors between Autumn and Spring. Preferably soft kid leather.

borntobequiet · 05/10/2021 15:33

@BiLuminous

Don't brush your fecking eyebrows upwards.
I like this one.
Suburbanqueen · 05/10/2021 15:35

Never wear black and brown together or black and navy.

alittlequinnie · 05/10/2021 15:37

Trinny and Susannah used to say that wearing black next to a colour "cheapens the colour"

They also used to say no matter what height your heel your trousers/jeans should come to half way down the heel.

They said a load of stuff but I probably should have listened more because I brush my eyebrows slightly upwards!

.. I just need to find that paper bag for my head before I go out! LOL!

Mulhollandmagoo · 05/10/2021 15:38

@LaBellina

Boyfriend jeans have this name for a reason. I think they’re for men and I refuse to wear them Grin. I’ll live and die in my skinny jeans Grin
ME TOO!!!!!!

My younger sibling keeps telling me no-one wears skinny jeans anymore, but as a short arse they flatter me and make my legs look longer so I'm sticking with them

Clara91 · 05/10/2021 15:38

@simitra

Agree about the leggings. Why do overweight women (of a certain social type) wear leggings and cheap puffer jackets which stop at the waist? Not in the least flattering. Where do they find these outfits?
I only know one person who dresses like this and I imagine they're not of the "social type" you're referring to Grin
WhatInTheBodenIsThis · 05/10/2021 15:39

Cheap whore.

Certain social type.

What a horrible way to speak about women based on what they choose to wear.

thisplaceisapigsty · 05/10/2021 15:40

Bags should match shoes, all jewellery should be the same metal, ie. don't mix gold and silver, nothing low cut, never wear shoes you can't run in. I ignore two of those, follow the other two religiously!

Blossomtoes · 05/10/2021 15:40

Don't wear navy and black together - apparently you can and it looks classy (I still can't bring myself to do this - it's wrong on every level)

I was taught that one. I discovered it was complete bollocks, looks uber chic and have never looked back.

Granllanog · 05/10/2021 15:41

Underwear should be unseen!!!

No white bras under a white shirt, bra straps not on display, no thongs or knickers riding up above jeans etc

NamechangeApril21 · 05/10/2021 15:42

@duffed

trousers and leggings must cover ankles

Was bullied terribly for wearing 'ankle swingers' in secondary school, and can't understand how this has become fashionable.

I'm 5'11 and find it so hard to find decent trousers to cover my ankles that don't cost a ridiculous amount of money so I'm hoping this trend lasts a long time 😂
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 15:44

That's like a rule from another era! Grin

I like the idea of leather gloves but I don't enjoy wearing them in reality. If I wear gloves it's usually Fagin style fingerless gloves so I can still use my fingers properly.

midsomermurderess · 05/10/2021 15:44

Trinny and Susannah had one, never wear colour with black, exceptions being white, grey, bitter chocolate. I think they were right. It looks like you are attending a 1980s Conservative Party Conference.

I’m so sorry @Blossomtoes, I know you gave me this advice on my thread about what boots to wear with my navy dress - but I wimped out
Fizzbangwallop · 05/10/2021 15:53

Today I have purple bra/crop top straps on show with a bright pink scoop necked t shirt. I’ve got pink and purple streaks in my hair to match. It’s quite nice to think I’m still breaking fashion ‘rules’ at nearly 60! Smile

monarchoftheglen · 05/10/2021 15:59

Honestly can't bear it, makes you look like a cheap whore

overweight women (of a certain social type)

What nasty comments ...

Echobelly · 05/10/2021 16:03

@NotSure94 - personally I love the idea of 'looking like a teacher at a school for elves!' Grin

I'm happy with visible bra straps but just make sure the bra is clean and hasn't gone grey in the wash Blush

The fashion police will prise my skinny jeans/jeggings/leggings off my cold dead body. wider legged jeans make me look like I have elephant legs.

I think if bra straps are going to show, they should look like they are intended to show...so a bright colour, frilly decoration....somthing that confirms its deliberate.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 05/10/2021 16:08

@MorrisZapp

Red and green should never be seen
Isn't it Blue and Green should never be seen?... I remember watching a documentary and the Queen making a comment about it
Sonarl · 05/10/2021 16:09

Has someone said don't wear Navy and Black? I quite like that

prettyteapotsplease · 05/10/2021 16:14

I like to wear vests when it's a bit chilly and I always tuck them in.

With t-shirts I always wear a smooth bra as lacy seams look awful.

Colour co-ordinate to look smarter.

If fabric is so jazzy that it's impossible to tell which is the predominant colour I won't choose it as I like to co-ordinate as above.

I never buy anything just because it's in fashion - if it doesn't suit me, forget it.

Colour capsule wardrobe helps save time and money.

Gonnagetgoing · 05/10/2021 16:16

when I was much younger - in my 20's - I always went by the boobs or legs adage when I went out - maybe broke that rule sometimes when going clubbing!

I also wore either strong eye makeup or strong lipstick (red) but as I didn't wear red lipstick until my mid 20s that wasn't an issue.

Double denim - never done that. Navy and black - yes have done this sometimes.

Visible bra straps - well at my size - 28FF/30G - you won't find dainty bra straps... but mine are nude or coloured and not grey!
