Apparently obsolete fashion rules that you stick with regardless

For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

I LOVE double denim and will never apologize for it.

Jumpingintosummer · 05/10/2021 15:03

Gym wear is for the gym!

PumpkinCrumble · 05/10/2021 15:04

I’m pear shaped so I try and do the pattern on top and darker colour on the bottom rule…and then fail when it comes to gorgeously patterned skirts. Oh well.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 05/10/2021 15:04

The visible bra thing is a Carrie Bradshaw trend - probably inspired by 80s Madonna. Cheap whore is a horrible thing to say.

I also stick to the no black with colour rule. I even remember Trinny and Susannah going on about it on TV when I was about 14 Grin.

@Turkishangora

I will always have at least shoulder length hair despite being over 45.

Always wear skinny jeans.

Always wear eye liner. Don't care if it's dated.

Wait a minute. Since when is eyeliner dated?! I don’t care if it is though, will never give it up.
Gonnagetgoing · 05/10/2021 15:11

@YessicaHaircut

Cycling shorts should only be worn for cycling. I couldn’t believe it when they were back in fashion recently and all the trendy students around town were wearing them.
yes... I've seen them recently in a local town - orange and pink cycling shorts on all sizes and with fake tan...

Having said that I did used to wear pastel pink Benetton cycling shorts when I was 20/21 many years ago with a baggy tshirt. Grin.

SirChenjins · 05/10/2021 15:12

According to DD(22) eyeliner under your eyes is dated, as is mascara on your bottom eyelashes. In eye make up terms I’m older than Yoda.

SirChenjins · 05/10/2021 15:12

Cycling shorts are brilliant for preventing chub rub - but them now when you see them!

HermioneAndRoger · 05/10/2021 15:15

My mum always said that wearing navy and black together makes you look like you got dressed in the dark.

It can work if you have a very blue navy and a very black black but it is tricky to pull off.

lindyloo57 · 05/10/2021 15:15

I totally agree with the leggings, its like do people look in the mirror before they leave the house, some shocking sights.

bellaweir · 05/10/2021 15:17

Red and yellow! No matter how nice the outfit it's the combination just reminds me of McDonald's

JumperandJacket · 05/10/2021 15:17

For many years I didn't wear black shoes with blue jeans, only brown ones. Not sire this was a fashion rule generally but it was at my school.

Another one here with big boobs and a wardrobe full of V-necks, thanks Trinny and Susannah.

HarrietOh · 05/10/2021 15:17

@Magicpaintbrush

That winter coats should have buttons - what is this sudden craze I'm seeing everywhere of winter coats with no buttons at all or one puny button? What is the actual point???? I want a proper coat that I can button up from neck to foof that will keep out the cold!!!!!!!!!
As someone with Koumpounophobia I LOVE coats without buttons Grin
Bimblybomeyelash · 05/10/2021 15:19

Night out = jeans and a ‘going out’ top.

@user752413

If you did the fashion the first time, don't do it when it comes around again. too old
I'm on my third time round the block with some items.

@MorrisZapp

Red and green should never be seen
expect for an irish Colleen
BiLuminous · 05/10/2021 15:22

Don't brush your fecking eyebrows upwards.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 05/10/2021 15:22

I haven't heard of eyeliner being dated, my girls wear it all the time, so do their friends, mind you, often with false lashes...

NotSure94 · 05/10/2021 15:26

As I read once coloured tights make you look like a teacher at a school for elves. Black opaques or nothing! I'd like to think that everyone agreed that wearing your dressing gown/nightwear on the school run/local shop etc was awful and not a fashion but there's a few local perpetrators who seem to think it's totally fine.

Men wearing loafers without socks makes me cringe a bit.

godmum56 · 05/10/2021 15:27

@2bazookas

Rules? There are rules? Nobody told us. We wear what the hell we like.
we don' need no steenkin rules Grin

I do have things I will wear and things I won't but these have changed over time and my body shape. I keep to them because I like or don't like the way they make me look...not because of rules.

Leggings have to be covered with a long top so bum covered.

The right colour of bra under tops so no black bra white vest top etc

You can wear black and blue together only if the black is on the bottom not the top.

Pinklioness · 05/10/2021 15:31

@EmmalineC

I LOVE bright neon bra straps with darker colour strappy tops, it looks funky and far better than a strapless bra that makes most people look like they've got a uniboob.

Then again, I guess I must be a cheap whore Hmm

Me too. So much harder to hide straps when you're larger in boob. It's always seemed a bit prissy to me to have to hide a bra strap. It's not revealing anything inappropriate.

But I'm obvs whorish too. Awful word but perhaps we can reclaim it.
