For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

I think I read somewhere on here (les Parisennes de Mumsnet?) that wearing black and navy is now considered très chic.
Still can't do it, though.

SiobhanSharpe · 05/10/2021 14:39

..Parisiennes...

This combo was adviced as ‘tres chic’ in the book ‘How to be a Parisienne’ by Ines de la Fressange. Who designs, by the way, a gorgeous collection for Uniqlo every season.

trousers and leggings must cover ankles

Was bullied terribly for wearing 'ankle swingers' in secondary school, and can't understand how this has become fashionable.

EdgeOfTheSky · 05/10/2021 14:42

It's 'Blue and Green must Never Be Seen'!

Tell that to a peacock.
I love blue and green.

ShrikeAttack · 05/10/2021 14:42

I'm wearing black and navy today, it looks great!

Go mad and try it!

HarebrightCedarmoon · 05/10/2021 14:43

I know women say it's empowering etc, but when I see 4 year olds at sports groups where the boys are wearing baggie trackies and the girls are wearing leggings and a t-shirt I do wonder why we're teaching girls that default clothing involves being v tight

It's not empowering, it's just more comfortable. It doesn't matter when you are four but when you are 44, running tights are so much more supporting. And warm. And men wear them too.

EmmalineC · 05/10/2021 14:43

I LOVE bright neon bra straps with darker colour strappy tops, it looks funky and far better than a strapless bra that makes most people look like they've got a uniboob.

Then again, I guess I must be a cheap whore Hmm

dworky · 05/10/2021 14:44

All of them should be obsolete.
What someone chooses to wear is nobody else's business.

Neonplant · 05/10/2021 14:45

@MatildaJayne

Being large of nork, mine aren't tamed by a strapless bra, so I love the pretty bra strap fashion. I can wear strappy dresses and tops again!
Lol same! Also it always cracks me up when people call them norks. Sorry I know that's childish! But a strapless bra on me does very little so bra straps are the least worst option!

How are you wearing it? I don't really mena it for other people BTW. I'm not really the type to care what other people wear. It's just a personal rule!
LaBellina · 05/10/2021 14:47

I like a navy blazer or cashmere jumper on black jeans @Neonplant

ACNHMAMA · 05/10/2021 14:48

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

Black trousers shouldn't be worn with a brightly coloured top. As said by Trinny and Susannah back in ye dayes of yore. The early 00's.
What?! I live in black trousers and bright tops. Blush
Pippapet · 05/10/2021 14:50

@SafferUpNorth

Gaudy bra straps under strappy tops & camisoles... seemed to be everywhere these last few summers among the young 'uns, esp hot pink bra under black/white top. Honestly can't bear it, makes you look like a cheap whore. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm sticking to my strapless bra!
This was a 90s trend and a lot of the 90s trends have come back in recently.

Although personally I don't like it. Bra straps should not be on show (in general). They are scaffolding, not decoration. Smile

SiobhanSharpe · 05/10/2021 14:51

LaBellina Interesting. I have some gorgeous Ines de la Fressange black quilted luggage...
Who knew? 16eme arrondissement here I come! 😉😉

user752413 · 05/10/2021 14:52

No black and navy together

HappyDays101010 · 05/10/2021 14:52

For some reason I am really tickled by Wear Pearl stud earrings to widen your smile - like they're supposed to look like extra teeth, or something Grin

PineappleWilson · 05/10/2021 14:52

lippy or eyes but not both, so more muted lipstick and eyeliner / strong shadow or muted eyes and bolder lips.

LaBellina · 05/10/2021 14:54

Don’t forget to wear lipgloss instead of lipstick @SiobhanSharpe and don’t match your shoes with your bag. Some other of het ‘rules’ that I remember to pass as a true Parisienne Grin

user752413 · 05/10/2021 14:55

If you did the fashion the first time, don't do it when it comes around again.
too old

KeepScrapingBy · 05/10/2021 14:55

Cardigans should have buttons - what's the point otherwise? They just flap around and you get cold.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 05/10/2021 14:56

@MorrisZapp

Red and green should never be seen
I only heard that for blue and green
Sleeplessem · 05/10/2021 14:56

Ugg boots belong in the bin

Newoneagain20 · 05/10/2021 14:58

Leggings - tops should cover the bum. Even the quality ones that don’t show your knickers through the material Grin I got caught once with a cheap pair, I was wearing a long top bent over sorting the baby in the pushchair my husband said did you really want everyone to know you are wearing red flower pants Blush

I would love to be able to wear boyfriend jeans…but for some reason they just don’t suit me. Size 12 5,10 height ….I wear them they make me dumpy and short! So skinnies to stay for now!

BobbiPink · 05/10/2021 14:59

Skinny jeans. I am NOT wearing bootcut or “mom” jeans or “boyfriend” jeans. Especially with boots. I will stick to skinny jeans.

I also do not wear red lipstick with elaborate eye makeup because i agree that it’s too much.
