This business about skinny jeans being over?

I keep hearing it but I can't see any evidence.

Earlier this week I travelled almost the whole length of the District Line, from East London, through the City and West End out to Wimbledon and back, over the course of about 10 hours.

I'd say at least 97% of women, of all ages, from very young to not so young at all, were wearing either skinny jeans or very slim leg trousers. I saw one group of young women all wearing wide leg, ripped jeans and a few wearing joggers. That it. This would be a mixture of tourists, Londoners going about their business, working people and people out for the evening.

I had coffee in the City, lunch in a West End restaurant, drank in a swanky West London pub, attended a sporting event. Honestly skinnies everywhere.

I looked because I'd worn a skirt rather than skinny jeans and it was raining, so wide leg ones are horrible. Didn't see many skirts either Grin Certainly very little evidence that no one's wearing skinnies any more.

I think these new jean trends don’t work if you don’t want to wear a fitted top.

I like a slouchy knit for winter. My legs are better than my stomach. I’d rather have the bad at the top and the tight at the bottom half. Grrrr

Delatron · 25/08/2021 14:13

Baggy at the top

Floisme · 25/08/2021 14:44

Yeah I can see a baggy fit might not work so well if you don't want to draw attention to the belly area. I think I'd probably just try for straight leg in that case: narrow but not skinny. Or I might avoid jeans and trousers completely for a while. I've been known to do that - even though normally I hardly ever wear dresses - e.g. when waists went ultra low.

I'm excusing myself from current and future jeans trends until the skinny rolls around again. Nothing works as well for my playground/muddy walks phase of life, and gives a little support to my 2 pregnancy/1 emcs tum.

I lived the horrors of the low rise flare back in my 00s heyday before my abs had been torn to pieces by childbearing and the thought return of said trend gives me nightmares.

Low rise jeans with a diamanté thong peeping out, was the worst of all jean trends.

Carycy · 25/08/2021 14:56

I’ve just stopped wearing jeans to avoid the problem!

Isitreallyme177 · 25/08/2021 15:08

I was looking at jeans recently, I've seen loads of skinny jeans. Next a mix of skinny, straight, flare. Superdry skinny and flare. New look a mix. One thing I'm struggling with are skinny jeans with rips in, I like my ripped skinnies (they make a nice change to black jeans) but all the ones I've seen are more holes than distressed/ripped and at 43 I don't really want to show half my legs and crotch off.

Yes! And embellished low rise jeans - I remember trying some what I thought were plain blue low-rise flared jeans in about 2003 in a high street shop. Got them on, lovely…….turned to look at the back and there was sequins and roses and all sorts going on round the arse - was gutted as they were such a perfect fit but I didn’t want the sparkly arse

I have taken to wearing gym leggings much more. It is my job outfit so I can kind of get away with it.

May stock up on thermal leggings for winter to wear with furry lined boots and my warm parka. I just can’t do baggy jeans for my lifestyle in winter.
Dog walks/wellies/warm coats. None really work with a wide jean

honeybuns007 · 25/08/2021 16:28

Of course you will still see people wearing them. Most people are not very fashion conscious or fashionable so they will just continue wearing things until they are so very very out of fashion that they stop. Just about when they become cool again 🤣. If on the other hand you are talking about whether they are in trend and whether cool people are wearing them... no. They aren't.

BigButtons · 25/08/2021 22:27

I asked my 15 year olds dd about this. She said that ‘older’ people still wear them, but that they were not fashionable and younger people would not be seen dead in them.
I have always loved my 501 cts and am very happy I am now tendy again. I never stopped wearing them in the first place though.

I think 501s are very flattering to one's bum.

I decided at 15 not to take fashion advice from 15 year olds.

It's stood me in good stead so far Grin

BigButtons · 26/08/2021 07:44

@pastabest mine is actually amazing at dress and fashion. She is what you might call kooky- but she looks great.
I was just asking her thoughts. She said it was fine to wear them just that they weren’t the trending style .

BigButtons · 26/08/2021 07:48

@Classica I love mine. Would be happy to wear no other jeans.
There is the eternal problem of what happens in the winter. I get seriously cold, I am a pathetic cold person and barring a balaclava every part of me is covered. I cannot be doing with exposed ankles so I think the CTs will be retired for skinnies for the winter.

@BigButtons but that's not true everywhere as my 15 year old and all her friends still like wearing them!
