This business about skinny jeans being over?

I keep hearing it but I can't see any evidence.

Earlier this week I travelled almost the whole length of the District Line, from East London, through the City and West End out to Wimbledon and back, over the course of about 10 hours.

I'd say at least 97% of women, of all ages, from very young to not so young at all, were wearing either skinny jeans or very slim leg trousers. I saw one group of young women all wearing wide leg, ripped jeans and a few wearing joggers. That it. This would be a mixture of tourists, Londoners going about their business, working people and people out for the evening.

I had coffee in the City, lunch in a West End restaurant, drank in a swanky West London pub, attended a sporting event. Honestly skinnies everywhere.

I looked because I'd worn a skirt rather than skinny jeans and it was raining, so wide leg ones are horrible. Didn't see many skirts either Grin Certainly very little evidence that no one's wearing skinnies any more.

Fitted top.

Divebar2021 · 24/08/2021 10:16

@holidaynearlyover

You could go for a slim leg / straight leg that isn’t too wide (or too long )and wear either a long boot underneath or an ankle boot with no gap as per Jo Ellison.

I havent worn skinny jeans in a couple of years and favour a slim straight leg cut for casual wear; I just think they 'go' better with the tops I wear, which is what makes it look more modern IMO, being able to tuck in a shirt or a jumper with a rolled sleeve or something slim fitting to contrast the slightly wider leg, is flattering.

Tucking stuff into skinny jeans doesn't really work that well and things like a fami or a peplum over the skinny jeans I think is what dates them. The jeans themselves are fine and often flattering.

I might pick up some in the future again, in black, maybe for winter but don't feel a huge need. Each to their own though, it's just a pair of trousers.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/08/2021 10:46

@Delatron I wear jumpers/cardigans that sit on the waist - if a cardigan then with a tucked in top underneath. I'm more likely to wear darker jeans in winter, so I think that automatically looks less scruffy. I have a small waist/big hips and bum, so tucking in or having something that is slightly cropped works well on my figure. In terms of coats I have loads of different ones and think they look fine? Maybe a long, very smart, wool coat might be a different story but I don't own one - and have seen people on Instagram looking great in that with loose jeans anyway!

holidaynearlyover · 24/08/2021 10:53

@Divebar2021 that does look nice but just not sure I could pull it off!!

Delatron · 24/08/2021 11:00

Thanks @Judystilldreamsofhorses good ideas.

I unfortunately don’t have much of a waist anymore! Small hips/bum but not much shape. I do think small waist and bigger bun/hips look lovely in the mom/loose jeans with a cropped top.
It doesn’t work for me. But I had a good 15 years of skinny jeans which suit me better!

Love the idea of a smart wool coat. I may try straight jeans rolled up over boots. Can’t do cropped jumpers though. Maybe fitted jumpers would work.

What is a fami? Google has failed me.

I haven’t seen anyone wearing peplum anything for a while now. Weren’t they best for people with a straight up and down figure?

Floisme · 24/08/2021 11:34

I love those Jo Ellison pics, especially the one with the tweed jacket. I'm sure it's much more considered than it looks, and carrying a bag that doesn't leave your hands free, let alone making sure it matches your boots, are both steps too far for me. But that basic look of straight/relaxed jeans, wool jacket / coat and ankle boots is one of my autumn favourites.

Divebar2021 · 24/08/2021 11:57

@Flosime

Jo Ellison is a favourite of mine - I never see her looking bad. I have no doubt all her pieces are extremely well thought out and considered ( and expensive ) but she does repeat items a lot. I don’t get the sense that she’s changing her outfit 3 times a day during fashion week. I agree about the bag… I’d go for a crossbody / slouchy shoulder bag with those looks.

I think with jeans there are as many ways of wearing them as there are style of jean. People need to stand in front of the mirror and play around with their winter jumpers and coats / boots etc to find the proportions that work. I don’t think you always have to slavishly put a fitted top on with a wider leg, I quite like big over loose, but if you’re uncertain then it’s a pretty safe starting point. Longer or looser jumpers might look good with a French tuck to introduce some shape at the waist but a lot depends of how high the waist is on the jeans and the weight of the jumper. I think what tends to unite a lot of current styles though is the length…the vast majority of photos I’ve seen of jean outfits are ankle length or cropped. Unless you’re wearing a kick flare with a heel I think the shorter lengths are an easier entry point into winter wear and “ non skinny”jeans.

A cami?
5128gap · 24/08/2021 14:51

Interested in the concern about being judged for wearing something that's meant to be 'dated'. It would never occur to me as a bog standard woman in the street that other people would notice what I was wearing, unless it was something uniquely eye catching or I looked head turningly stunning. Surely most ordinary people go about their business with the finer details of their jeans largely unnoticed by others? I get interest in fashion for it's own sake, and wanting to look good, but surely people don't think strangers care what jeans random women are wearing?

I feel weird now but I look at what people wear all the time - men, women and children!

When I see some clothes, I wonder where they are from (if I like them) or I think to myself that particular shade is the wrong shade for their colouring.

At the moment I’m looking for new trainers and I look at everyone’s feet and try to spot the brand name of the ones I like.

I largely ignore people in sports clothes.

I’d hate to feel completely nondescript and invisible when I’m out and about especially if I have made an effort. I don’t wear high fashion or even dress up much anymore but I care how I dress when I am going clothes shopping/to the hairdressers. Obviously I don’t care what I look like as much when I’m walking in the park and going to the playground with my kids.

Delatron · 24/08/2021 18:30

When I go in to London I spend my whole time looking at what other people are wearing! I find inspiration there. Less so in my local town...

Dancingonmoonlight · 24/08/2021 18:33

Delatron

Thank God! I was beginning to think I must be extremely superficial!

Salanda · 24/08/2021 18:49

I like people watching too! I’m in London and enjoy seeing different outfits and make mental notes if I’ve seen a good outfit - it’s just inspiration for what I can put together. E.g lots of posts recently asking what to wear with non-skinny jeans in the winter - I’d be looking around and seeing what others are wearing! I don’t sit there horribly judging people, it’s just about appreciating style.

Floisme · 24/08/2021 18:51

I always notice what people wear.
Mr Flo notices their haircuts and cameras.
My son notices their dogs and cars.
Admittedly we're a very superficial family.

newnortherner111 · 24/08/2021 18:52

Skinny jeans seem to be less commonplace than they were. Unfortunately some have been replaced by 'athleisure', by people who would not walk more than 100 yards without getting in their Chelsea Tractor.

5128gap · 24/08/2021 18:59

I don't think its superficial to notice, I'm just really surprised, as I wouldn't dream that anyone would notice what I was wearing unless I knew them or I looked amazing (I don't).

Beefcurtains79 · 25/08/2021 07:29

I always notice what other people wear, it gives me pleasure and inspiration.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/08/2021 07:32

Well I just ordered a new pair of skinny jeans. Mum jeans, straight cut jeans and baggy jeans can fuck right off. They look shit and very few people can pull them off.

I used to like boyfriend jeans but that's when I was nice and skinny and could wear tight tops, now I'll stick to skinny jeans and baggy tops.

FreekStar2 · 25/08/2021 08:16

If nobody noticed what others were wearing then there wouldn't be a fashion industry. It's human nature to check others out, admire each other, and aspire to look a certain way. I love putting an outfit together, I love getting ideas from people around me for what looks good, and of course what doesn't.

ConfusedParticle · 25/08/2021 13:08

Asked a few friends about this recently, after seeing the thread.

As ive said before, I don't wear jeans, but am still intrigued.

According to one, she said not sure sh'e like to wear mom/baggy styles as has big boobs and shorter, fitted tops make her look heavier. Another, who is a pear shape said 'yeh. I'm ok with them'.

I too look at people's clothing all the time, and I am fascinated but never judge. Im not interested in judging or comparing myself to anyone. But it is nice to look and see how differently everyone interprets clothes. I am equally intrigued by those who don't care, who wear dated styles. It's all pretty interesting to me - equally.

Squeezies · 25/08/2021 13:32

To me it’s all dependent on the top that goes with the jeans. Back in the late 90s/early 00s when bootcut reigned supreme, I remember tops being quite fitted and close fitting. Especially with the low rise jeans, to really showcase those Britney abs (if you had Britney abs). And those little handkerchief tops that were about too.

Since skinnies became popular (I had some in 2006) I feel tops have become looser. There’s lots of smock tops, baggy tees, long cardigans.

I’m an average size 12 but I look a lot bigger and more shapeless if I wear loose fit jeans and a loose top.

If I wear my mom jeans I’ll a slim fit t-shirt or something, which I tuck in. My skinnies I’ll wear with Converse or Doc Martens and a looser top. So it’ll be skinnies in the winter as I think with DMs and a jumper/coat the silhouette is much more flattering on me.

Classica · 25/08/2021 13:54

'Skinny jeans are dead and gone.
They're with O'Leary in the grave.'

And thank goodness for that.

LimpLettice · 25/08/2021 14:11

I went jeans shopping lat week, tried on lots of styles, looked hideous in everything and bought home more skinnies. I'm 43, a size 12, with a diastasis which means I look 5 months pregnant all the time, quite curvy but with a small waist. Every single baggy fit was bizarrely bagged out in the crotch, gathered weirdly at the waist, or made me look 27 stone, which after 3 months of dieting and losing 10kg just isn't worth my money.

Soo what shape is flattering on that sort of figure and won't out me as a middle aged frump?
