This business about skinny jeans being over?

I keep hearing it but I can't see any evidence.

Earlier this week I travelled almost the whole length of the District Line, from East London, through the City and West End out to Wimbledon and back, over the course of about 10 hours.

I'd say at least 97% of women, of all ages, from very young to not so young at all, were wearing either skinny jeans or very slim leg trousers. I saw one group of young women all wearing wide leg, ripped jeans and a few wearing joggers. That it. This would be a mixture of tourists, Londoners going about their business, working people and people out for the evening.

I had coffee in the City, lunch in a West End restaurant, drank in a swanky West London pub, attended a sporting event. Honestly skinnies everywhere.

I looked because I'd worn a skirt rather than skinny jeans and it was raining, so wide leg ones are horrible. Didn't see many skirts either Grin Certainly very little evidence that no one's wearing skinnies any more.

I wasn’t saying no-one was selling them or buying them, I was saying their popularity is waning.

Maybe you didn't but some people on the thread have.

Some people are not fast adopters of new trends - no doubt waiting to see the longevity

The majority aren't but the demise of skinny jeans have been predicted for years & they are clinging on but yes I think more options is a good thing.

countrytown · 21/08/2021 18:09

what we think is flattering on us, is what we are used to seeing, ie what’s in fashion at the time. What we think is flattering is largely (not always but very often) dictated by fashion.

My comment about someone wearing something that doesn't suit them was in response to a poster saying They just make me look carrot shaped. Totally unflattering on my figure and so bloody uncomfortable. Reading that description I'm pretty sure that poster is not confused about whether they are flattering or not on her 🤣

I was in London last week and noticed the opposite OP, loads of baggy jeans, boot cut, flared or just straight leg like we had in the 90s. It's amazing being able to get so many shapes in the shops again now too, I'm sure skinnies aren't going to go away but as I've never really liked them I'm really glad they aren't 'the' shape anymore.

I used to wear exclusively skinny jeans. Now they’re one style I wear - also like my jersey joggers and cropped ‘mom’ jeans.

I do prefer the silhouette of skinnies with a thick winter coat and chunky ankle boots, so I’ll probably stick to them when it gets colder. I also find them warm, like a second skin

Same! Wear them if you want but I've never loved them and am happy there are lots of other options in the shops now!

Terrified at the thought of low rise coming back in. When I was a teenager and they were in, I had a teeny tiny waist that was so flat.

If low rise came back in now I'd keep bumping into things where my belly would hit them first because it's not safely tucked behind jeans Grin.

I am still wearing my skinnies for now but it's getting more and more obvious I'm behind the times in my area. I'm 35 and feel like I'm not quite ready to give up on fashion just yet.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 22/08/2021 11:25

I’m wearing skinny jeans today for the first time in about 2 years (because I’m pregnant and everything else is in the wash!)
I’m going out for lunch, so will be interesting to see how I feel being out and about in them. My top is a black scoop neck ribbed vest and I think I’ll add an oversized shirt and Adidas Ozweego trainers. For some reason I think my Stan smiths would be dated with skinnies.

Coogee · 22/08/2021 11:31

Terrified at the thought of low rise coming back in.

You don’t have to wear them!

Personally, I can’t wait. Grin

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 22/08/2021 11:40

Skinny jeans were/are very flattering for me, as it suits my shape, but now that I have started wearing baggy/loose cuts I just LOVE how they feel, no constrictions, so comfy and look so cool and for me there is no way back

My fave pair is now a super baggy /wide H&M Lee pair with unpicked hem. Looks great with trainers imo

Every time I need to decide between skinny or loose fit, my hand reaches for the loose fit.

I’ve had to update my tops though, as they need shorter/cropped top than you’d wear with skinnies

It’s a whole process this change Grin

sweetmacadamia · 22/08/2021 11:41

@Coogee you're right but it's easier when they're not in fashion isn't it Grin

Slipperfairy · 22/08/2021 14:23

I remember really, really hating jeans shopping cos there were so many pitfalls in the right fit. Skinny jeans shopping has always been easy cos they always fit. Especially the stretch ones.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 23/08/2021 10:29

I just said to my family yesterday that I think we have reached a point in time where EVERY single possible style & permutation of jean is fashionable. I informed them that skinnies were apparently 'out of style', but honestly they are still everywhere, I still love them, and who is going to go around judging people on what type of jean they are wearing? We were out in London yesterday at a food/music thing, and every imaginable style of jean was in evidence.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 23/08/2021 10:31

PS Though I must say that I haven't seen any 70s-style bell-bottom jeans around.....

Etulosba · 23/08/2021 10:50

Weren’t they called loon pants?

Floisme · 23/08/2021 10:52

I have Grin although not jeans but in a stretchy jersey. But I agree with you, there's pretty much every style out there at the moment, which is highly unusual and something to enjoy while it lasts. It's why I don't really understand threads like this - skinnies are still around, they just no longer have a monopoly, which is surely a good thing?
Etulosba · 23/08/2021 10:52

Polyester frenzy!

This business about skinny jeans being over?
Floisme · 23/08/2021 11:04

This is just from memory but bell bottoms, as I recall, were quite fitted, often to below the knee and only flaring out near the ankle. My mum said I was too young for them but my sister had some. Loons were a much wider flare, often with embroidery around the hem, and by the time they came around, I was old enough to save up and buy my own. Smile

ToykotoLosAngeles · 23/08/2021 11:45

I understand why these threads pop up - if you're walking about in skinnies thinking they're a fairly neutral inoffensive option and then you see ageist (nobody under 40 etc) or anti-mum (mum uniform) comments on here about them, it makes people self-conscious, like they're not realising that they're being silently sneered at.

Floisme · 23/08/2021 11:56

I keep seeing this narrative about sneering or judging but, aside from the odd professional goadster (and even I tend to ignore them), a lot the discussion is about whether or not they're going out of fashion. I think they are but, that's not a value judgement. I also think it's interesting watching it play out in real time, what a slow process it is, and how different styles are jostling to become the next dominant shape - or maybe no single style will emerge which will also be interesting. If we can't talk about this on S&B where can we?

ToykotoLosAngeles · 23/08/2021 12:05

I'm just responding to where you said you don't understand these threads. There are literally 2 not-particularly-goady comments on page 1 and 2 calling skinnies "middle-aged mum" which isn't meant as particularly complimentary. I think people see passing comments like this followed by a litany of "wear them if you like them" with an implied "...but you'll look like you don't care about fashion". And a lot of us on here do.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 23/08/2021 12:06

Posted too soon - and that's why these threads get started because people go "Shit, really? Have I missed the boat? What about all my shoes/jumpers that go with skinnies?"

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/08/2021 12:15

I also don't think anyone is sneering on this thread - it's a discussion about trends! I think it's perfectly possibly to look stylish without wearing every single trend on the catwalk/high street.

I'm certain there will be a thread about animal print along in the next few weeks, which will eventually end up in the trending/active section, with loads of comments about "prostitutes", "Bet Lynch", "Kat Slater". Now those threads are sneery! (LEOPARD PRINT IS A NEUTRAL.)

Floisme · 23/08/2021 12:20

As a mum who won't even be middle aged for much longer, I'm fully aware of rampant ageism on Style and Beauty. Sometimes I call it out and sometimes I'm not in the mood for the fight or I'm trying to follow the underlying discussion. I think the way jeans fashion is changing is interesting. I wouldn't say commenting that younger people are picking up on a trend is ageist in itself, and frankly, after years of watching teenagers dressing like their parents, I'm quite pleased to see them starting to break away at last.

As for what tops and shoes - well yes but that's why the change is very slow. Most of us don't go out and replace our whole wardrobe at once, it's incremental.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 23/08/2021 12:21

I don't mean on here, I mean the odd (even polite) comment here makes people wonder if they're being judged in real life. Out on the street.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 23/08/2021 12:23

@Floisme So would you say you now understand why people start threads gauging opinion on skinnies? Or not?
