This business about skinny jeans being over?

I keep hearing it but I can't see any evidence.

Earlier this week I travelled almost the whole length of the District Line, from East London, through the City and West End out to Wimbledon and back, over the course of about 10 hours.

I'd say at least 97% of women, of all ages, from very young to not so young at all, were wearing either skinny jeans or very slim leg trousers. I saw one group of young women all wearing wide leg, ripped jeans and a few wearing joggers. That it. This would be a mixture of tourists, Londoners going about their business, working people and people out for the evening.

I had coffee in the City, lunch in a West End restaurant, drank in a swanky West London pub, attended a sporting event. Honestly skinnies everywhere.

I looked because I'd worn a skirt rather than skinny jeans and it was raining, so wide leg ones are horrible. Didn't see many skirts either Grin Certainly very little evidence that no one's wearing skinnies any more.

I agree @Floisme - I wear non-skinny jeans year round. If it’s too cold for bare ankles I have a selection of knee-high socks I wear underneath. I am also not a fan of the skinny jeans/high boot look.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 20/08/2021 20:00

I also just roll on top of ankle boots but then there are posts and posts about how that makes you look shorter. Which doesn't bother me at all. Ultimately the jean/boot options are -

Ankle boots with a roll/cropped
Ankle boots, jeans inside - requires skinnies or very slim trousers
Ankle boots, jeans outside - yes, that is going to feel a bit weird in 2021 until we all get used to it (see photo)
Knee high boots - skinnies or dress really, otherwise may as well buy ankle boots.

Skinny jeans are AWFUL! Each to their own but I can’t stand them.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 20/08/2021 20:15

Floisme, the bad weather thing is true for dog walks in the country. The boots in question are welly boots, not the baggy type but the proper hard wearing countryside walking wellies.

They are , ahem, fitted around the calf if you are athletic and/or chubby

Therefore, every morning between September and May I wear leggings or skinnies tucked into my boots, walking the dogs.

It’s for mud, not for style Grin

Divebar2021 · 20/08/2021 20:33

Jeans don’t have to be full length so you don’t necessarily have to roll them if you get a slighter shorter length / crop them at the right point. Turn ups look good on the right person - Victoria B is wearing straight cut jeans ( Levi’s 501’s) in a contemporary way I think.

I like those vintage slim jeans posted by @ToykotoLosAngeles I haven't worn or owned jeans for years, and then I wore super-low rise) but am tempted by something straight leg and slim.

I don't see so many people, lately, wearing the skinny jean. Harem pants and straight leg jeans, 'mom' or flares, usually the younger people.

If you are under 30 and care about being fashionable you won't be wearing skinnies at the moment. You'll be wearing baggy things.

Skinnies have become so universal and entrenched that I think we'll always see people wearing them (age 35+, me included as they are just so flattering for me) but alongside a range of other cuts. I think it's great there's likely a cut for everyone these days, unless you like low rise of course...

I’ll tell my 24 year old daughter and her mates then, they must have missed your memo 😂
Cocogreen · 20/08/2021 22:45

Skinnies are definitely out of fashion in my son's friend group. All the girls ( under 25) are in high waist baggy jeans and crops.
I've never worn skinnies, only slim leg and will keep on!
People can wear what they want but I do think skinnies are less popular.

BasicB · 20/08/2021 23:12

I think as well with skinny jeans, as with most things, it depends what you’re wearing them with.

I’ve moved away from them a little bit - I put some mid-blue ones on the other week with a top and a cardi and those together felt a bit dated. I bet they’d look even more dated with ballet pumps. But some black ones with my black Converse high tops, and a baggy blue denim shearling jacket looked really good. The girls who work in my hairdressers all seem to wear black skinnies and they looked fab.

I love warm and comfy they are, I like how they don’t soak up the rain, and I like how they keep their shape. I think I’ll get some more black ones for winter.

liveforsummer · 20/08/2021 23:15

I decided to try a pair of mom jeans however there wa one or 2 styles/colours in the whole of the likes of h&m. Countless skinny options -
I'd say about 90% or more . They definitely aren't going anywhere

Divebar2021 · 20/08/2021 23:29

@liveforsummer

Perhaps there are regional differences in -store. If you look online at H&M and filter by style there are 66 skinny jeans on offer, 106 straight styles and 50 odd described as loose. That doesn’t include slim, flared and bootcut etc that are also listed in addition. Skinnies may well be current where you are but not necessarily nationally.

countrytown · 21/08/2021 00:00

H&M is weird because under fit they have skinny & super skinny

Bluntness100 · 21/08/2021 06:49

I’d agree skinnies are less popular than they used to be and more styles now breaking in. This doesn’t mean they are out of fashion though.

The thing is all the magazines have been declaring them out for a couple of years now, and women in their droves continue to wear them, shops stock them in abundance for the simple reason there is still huge demand. If there wasn’t they wouldn’t.

Of course different styles are more fashion forward, and have been for awhile, but skinnies are not currently in the same bracket as say boot leg or flares used to be, where you struggled to buy them snd literally no one wore them. Skinnies are still without a doubt still very popular.

When they become unfashionable, people will stop buying them, and then limited stores will sell them and in limited styles, just like what happened with bootleg and flares, you could still buy them but limited options.

The fact H&M is still stocking 66 different versions shows the popularity, compare it to boot cut where they stock only 11 versions. Twenty years ago the opposite was true.

Beefcurtains79 · 21/08/2021 07:07

People who keep saying that there are plenty of skinny jeans still online, in Asos or whatever don’t seem to understand that online stores never stop, they have stuff until they are sold out unless it’s sale or return, they aren’t going to take it offline if there’s still a chance people will still buy it.
The posters insisting that skinny jeans are still fashionable honestly sound like they are a bit desperate to believe it, it’s ok to let go and try something new! You’ve now got straight leg anklegrazers to wear with boots as well as mom, boyfriend, wide leg and bootleg to choose from! I bet they’ll look great and you’ll probably start to realise how uncomfortable skinnies actually are once you have a more relaxed fit.

*What exactly are 90s jeans anyway? I was a teenager then. The kids I see wearing baggy ripped Mom jeans, my friends didnt wear those. We wore Levi 501s or similar. I am 43. I briefly wore combats in the All saints era, then back to 501 type jeans.

Did I miss something?

You're right, really.

Jeans were just jeans. Straight, no stretch. 501s or 901s if you went in at the waist. Or cheap equivalents*.

This, although I wore flares from 1990 (some of which were DM's from the 70's). Dd (14) has jean flares, brown flares and my favourite velvet flares- third generation to wear velvet flares- I'm rather proud of that

Well I live in a capital city with a good selection of high end shops so I'd have thought fairly representative, but I could be wrong!

@Beefcurtains79 I was talking about shopping in store, however of course online stores don't just sell things forever. They put in the sale then send off elsewhere once discontinued. There isn't storage for all the old stock. H&M has a constantly changing stock selection. Often if you don't buy something when you see it you'll go back and it's disappeared. A couple of times I've found amazing jeans there then never found the same style again when I've wanted a replacement

CornishGem1975 · 21/08/2021 07:37

I agree @traumatisednoodle @Bobmonkfish My teen thinks she's being all 90s in her really baggy ripped jeans but I am just a little younger than you and we were Levi's 501s. I had them in each colour!

Deathraystare · 21/08/2021 07:38

Do grown ups not wear what suits rather than what is in fashion, anyway?!

Not everyone suits skinnies. My legs look like stuffed bursting sausages in them. Why I ever wore them I don't know. Of course, if you have nice slim legs, go ahead!!

thesunwillout · 21/08/2021 07:45

I've always had a pair of cargos, I still think I'm in All Saints 🤣

FreekStar2 · 21/08/2021 07:49

Yes I agree, really baggy ripped jeans were never a thing where I was, I was at university in the UK from 91-95 and my jeans were high waisted, slightly loose on the leg but not ripped! When I graduated in 95 it was all 501s but gradually switching to slim leg boot cuts and low slung waists- by the end of the 90s it was just bootcut all the way worn really long with high block heels and a cropped top- they really did make the legs look longer!

Tanfastic · 21/08/2021 07:54

I'm so glad they are going out. They just make me look carrot shaped. Totally unflattering on my figure and so bloody uncomfortable.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 21/08/2021 08:23

I haven’t worn jeans for years as I’m just too short to get ones to fit right. But this year I swapped all my dresses for long skirts a la my wardrobe from 1997! When my current ankle boots give up the ghost I’m looking forward to getting sneakers instead.

The shift to long skirts again took me by surprise a bit though. Now wishing I hadn’t taken all my original ones to the charity shop in 2003! Though this time they seem to be worn with baggy t-shirts and tops rather than tight ones.

Victoria Beckham hasn’t eaten a carb since about the year 2000, isn’t that how she goes it? I read somewhere that the only carbohydrate she eats is a small slice of cake once a year for her birthday, which she barely touches.

countrytown · 21/08/2021 08:55

I have no issue with skinny jeans popularity waning & I actually really like the increased width of options out there.

I just have disputed the fact no one is wearing them & buying them.

And the above is just not how retail works. There are people employed called merchandisers whose very job it is to make sure they don't overbuy, have small shipments etc. If skinny jeans aren't selling the likes of asos would be onto their suppliers stopping production, putting the cloth into other shapes. So if something is new in it's because it's either sold well before or forecasted to sell well based on previous sales.
