This business about skinny jeans being over?

I keep hearing it but I can't see any evidence.

Earlier this week I travelled almost the whole length of the District Line, from East London, through the City and West End out to Wimbledon and back, over the course of about 10 hours.

I'd say at least 97% of women, of all ages, from very young to not so young at all, were wearing either skinny jeans or very slim leg trousers. I saw one group of young women all wearing wide leg, ripped jeans and a few wearing joggers. That it. This would be a mixture of tourists, Londoners going about their business, working people and people out for the evening.

I had coffee in the City, lunch in a West End restaurant, drank in a swanky West London pub, attended a sporting event. Honestly skinnies everywhere.

I looked because I'd worn a skirt rather than skinny jeans and it was raining, so wide leg ones are horrible. Didn't see many skirts either Grin Certainly very little evidence that no one's wearing skinnies any more.

I'm pretty sure I still have a pair of flares and the cargo jeans I wore at university somewhere. Isn't it funny how fashion comes back round again but surely the cycle should be more like, 20 years rather than ... oh... 20 years Blush

HelgaDownUnder · 19/08/2021 21:49

I don't know anyone under 35 wearing skinny jeans it's a middle aged mum thing. Probably because they are practical.

Jayne35 · 19/08/2021 21:50

I think it only matters if you are 18-25, after that it doesn’t matter. My friends don’t care or comment on what I wear. I have skinny jeans, cargo trousers, chinos, bootcut jeans, pedal pushers etc and I wear whatever fits me at the time (not much after the last 18 months).

Trake · 19/08/2021 21:51

I’ll be glad to see the back of them. Wide leg/baggies/mum/dad jeans come on over!

...”it’s a middle age mum thing, probably because they are practical” That’s what we all thought, when baggies were first dying out and skinnies came in. We couldn’t get our heads round how skinnies would work, especially with boots. Our boots were baggy as well and the jeans just fell on top leaving only the nose of your boots (it was so cool!) peaking out.

Our head didn’t do the gymnastics then, that boot styles would change to accommodate the new style trousers. At first we tried stuffing our baggy jeans into the slimmer boot styles but then realised the new skinny jeans were made precisely for this purpose. It’s just swinging back that way again.

Let's face it, mumsnet is hardly the height of fashion knowledge. Take what you read on here with a pinch of salt.

VenusTiger · 19/08/2021 22:16

I couldn't give a shit what's in fashion Grin I'll wear what suits my figure.
My skinnies are my fave.

Brokenrecord3006 · 19/08/2021 22:24

Oh god, I live in my skinny jeans and have done for 15 years....maybe I do need to change them up! But they're so easy and they go with everything, I wouldn't know where else to start. Although denim flares are definitely tempting.

Slipperfairy · 19/08/2021 22:26

Young people are in mom jeans and crop tops. A few of their mums are also in mom jeans and crop tops. I, personally, find an 18 yr old and her 40 yr old mum wearing the same outfit. But then, I'm a bit 90s and would have died if my mum had tried to dress like me.

Slipperfairy · 19/08/2021 22:26

Sorry, find it a bit weird.

brokenbiscuitsx · 19/08/2021 22:32

I agree all shops are full of them and most people are still wearing them.

I’ve only heard of skinny jeans being out on here as well. Other styles are being sold now such as bootcut, flare, straight, wide leg but not sure why that means skinny has to go.

There’s room for all jean styles IMO! Grin

Bbub · 19/08/2021 22:44

@Trake haha yes so true!
My first ever pair of skinnnies was back in 2005ish and were bought specifically to fit my slim leg calf length black suede boots. Ahhh I wore those jeans til they split and the boots were in the sale and 1 size too small but I loved them and wore them to death as well. I thought the skinny jeans looked hideous out of the boots at first.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 19/08/2021 23:13

I'm really, really trying - the best I can find that I actually like and are not skinny are the Vintage Slim from H&M, attached, with a tucked-in top. But I wear swishy long tops and hi-tops, so anything but a slightly cropped skinny makes me look like an Oompa Loompa.

Agreed, I only hear this on mumsnet, threads going back to 2012 saying skinnies are out and dated, yet here we are in 2021 and River Island etc are full of skinny jeans (as well as all other styles,) Primark in my town only stock skinnies! In many shops there is a choice of all styles so as much as people on here like to say they are dated they will still be around for a while yet, there is plenty of room for all styles these days.
idontlikealdi · 19/08/2021 23:16

I've got some lovely slim cut jeans that are great turned up with trainers or flip flops for summer. I can't figure out what boots work for winter unless they are worn with skinny jeans.

I'm nit going back to bootcut where the rainwater travels up to your knees so unless I can find something else, skinnies it is.

Coogee · 19/08/2021 23:16

I'm always late to the party. I got my first pair in about 2015.

Bobmonkfish · 19/08/2021 23:22

Me too Coogie!

tiredanddangerous · 19/08/2021 23:24

Skinnes are definitely out among the young. I haven't seen anyone under the age of 40ish wearing a pair for a long time.

WingingItSince1973 · 19/08/2021 23:42

I don't care. I love my skinnies so will keep wearing them whatever x

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 19/08/2021 23:59

I love my skinny jeans, but I’m over 40 so no one else cares.

Ha ha same here. But then I do like to go against the trend. Pure stubbornness on my part or maybe growing old (am 48) disgracefully 🤣
Dancingonmoonlight · 20/08/2021 00:43

I don't know if they are definitely out or in but I do know that the majority of us on this thread will arrive late to the party and start wearing straight leg jeans and marvelling how our legs no longer look like upside down parsnips - just when a different style is coming in for the fashionistas.

I'm mid 40s and have found that when clothes come back around, they are never entirely the same style as they were previously. in 2000 I adored wearing jeans called kickflares, they were low rise, semi tight on my (then) slim thighs and flared out at the end. If it rained, the back of my jeans were soaked. They went out of fashion and I could no longer buy that style. I can't remember what style I wore next but a number of years later, my old favourites were back but this time with a high waist.

I've noticed when people wear different styles to one of the 'current' favourite styles, they tend to look dated and old fashioned. That is why we will all end up ditching our skinnies.

Really? Was out in town yesterday and there were plenty of 20/30 year old women in them. I’d say only maybe teenagers were wearing wider leg but definitely not everyone under 40.
ExtremelyDisorganised · 20/08/2021 07:11

Plenty of teens / young women still wearing them where I live, about 50/50 with wide leg or mom jeans.

BasicB · 20/08/2021 07:17

I’m 36 and over summer have been wearing baggier cropped jeans, and jersey joggers after being in a committed relationship with skinny jeans since 2006.

But I have a really nice long, loose parka as my winter coat which will look a bit scruffy with loose jeans I think - and boots - so I’ll probably wear skinnies over winter. I also find skinnies very warm and comfortable.
