Actually, on second glance, the Hobbs is way too short and tailored to fit the brief, but I got carried away by the €3 charity shop price point Grin
However, both the MaxMara look to be suitably mannish and textured, and Vinted sellers are usually open to offers

botemp · 10/10/2021 09:51

I'm glad she's doing well and is asymptomatic quirky. I do wish they would give better guidelines about what symptoms are like when you've been vaccinated. I remember when the pandemic just started and I was sort of ill (mostly just really tired and slept far more than usual) but none of my symptoms made sense as covid. I did keep track of my temps but it was only slightly elevated for a few hours 🤷 I didn't really realise taste had dulled a bit until it came back later and I think that still wasn't a recognised symptom at the time. In hindsight it probably was a mild almost asymptomatic version but there's hardly any explanation of what that looks like.

Welcome back Volte, I'm torn between feeling honoured you came back especially for us while on the other hand, people usually leave MN for good reasons.

I'm surprised Vinted aren't active in Sweden yet (I think, anyhow), they're an Estonian company so not that far away.

Afraid my Ayn Rand schtick was going to be sweeping streets, identify papers and eventually casting off the shirt so not very good but he should have sat in rapt attention as I held forth obv. (Have only read one Ayn Rand, that was enough for me, and it was the one about the street sweeper in dystopia so those were my jokes.)

Elle, I like the linen shirt dress too in theory but I think I could only wear it like that, as an open layer over very specific things, so it’s not versatile enough. And white linen is hard to wear as a dress because transparency. The sale price is very good though so we’ll see, I have a few days to ponder but it does look like a return for all Cos. I think that dress would suit you well though! It’s a thin person dress really. You want to have a lot of empty space between your body and the fabric.

The Arket shirt in a 42 is roomier and a little more comfortable, but has an odd excess of fabric behind the shoulders :( which annoys me. I’ll think about the sizes a bit more. I might well keep it and the broderie anglaise. 😬 Now all I need is stuff to wear it with or I’ll be in ubiquitous blue jeans all autumn.

Bo, there’s so much fun at an Irish wedding the colour is neither here nor there ;) I don’t fancy the collar on the Cos dress you posted at all, I think it’s get tired real quick. Every time I glanced down I’d see those collar points Grin

Zara and Gainsbourg sounds like a perfect match I must have a look.

Welcome back Voltefarce, good user name!

Shang, thank you for your enabling! Sadly my indecisiveness is now in full swing, my brain is so preoccupied with what I have actually bought. I will get in touch if I must haha.

Quirky, also glad she’s doing well. I agree that I find the guidelines increasingly hard to understand.

botemp · 10/10/2021 10:22

I find those collars more apparent in pictures than in RL (maybe it's because I don't have a super long neck and never really wear anything buttoned up that high) but at a wedding there's bound to be pictures so I take your point.

I only read The Fountainhead as it's unofficial mandatory reading for architects and it's loosely based on Frank Lloyd Wright (who I've always thought is very overrated, book confirms as much, Ayn Rand has some odd ideas of what a perfect man is). I actually quite enjoyed the book though Blush, I read Jane Jacobs' The Death and Life of Great American Cities afterwards to cleanse my soul a bit...

Even though I do think Ayn Rand sounds like she wasn't the most pleasant person, I think the American libertarians have gone a bit mad with the source material. Anyhow, your dystopian street sweeper bit sounds entertaining, have you considered TikTok Grin

I'm Envy of fun at Irish weddings, Dutch weddings are dull as fuck and over in about twenty minutes. Thankfully no one is all that interested in getting married and those that do usually only invite very close family.

I am glad symptoms are minor/non existent quirky
There seems to be a flu type thing going around that has got many in DS class at home in bed but all negative pcr…

Still waiting for a miracle to let me in Argentina… as they only let children in fully vaccinated or doing 10 days quarantine, no matter what negative pcr test they get or if the adults are fully vaccinated… I am at the end of my tether.

Ok, back to clothes to get my mind off mundane pandemic shit.

The Broderie anglaise top is good bani, the linen too but agree looks a bit tight in the pic. Love the poses , you know how to work it!

Ah Irish weddings Smile you are always invited to a wedding Elle Envy. How about ghost? For a dress?
I am not sure how much of a bump you will have or if the cuts will be suitable/you like them, but some ideas here.

Anthem is the one I read - and I did enjoy the sci fi dystopia up until the political ranting started! She wasn’t lacking in writing talent. I am very hazy on her connection to Wright, maybe I should read up on that (but in all honesty I probably can’t be arsed, my time would be better spent learning excel properly;) ).

Sadly my entire existence is marked by a lack of follow through-ness. If the jokes don’t come in the moment then they never will so Tiktok sketches are out. 🤓

I maintain Polish weddings are the best. Swedish weddings sound like Dutch ones but go on for seven hours. Mr bani once acted as an interpreter for some polish guests at a Swedish wedding and they were absolutely horrified that they were expected to sit at a formal dinner with no alcohol (teetotal family) for five hours and listen to speeches.

Redandblue11 · 10/10/2021 10:45

I would be horrified too Bani Shock !
I cannot comprehend a wedding or any get together for that matter … with no alcohol, music and loads and loads of exaggerated jokes and general amusement.

banivani · 10/10/2021 11:13

Red, they do dance, but might start at 11 and then it’s over by 1. It is quite dismal by comparison! My most hated bit is when the friends stand up and do a slideshow of the hen night/stag do. Doesn’t always happen but so tone deaf when it does!

Redandblue11 · 10/10/2021 17:30

I am looking at the perinelleXmango collection , here, considering some of the items, a couple of blazers there too.
There is a top with the back open that I wouldn’t normally be attracted to but somehow got my attention.

Les Parisiennes des Mamansnet: Do not ask the kock about les préservatifs in the food.
botemp · 11/10/2021 08:29

Yes Pernille is the abbatoir boots originator. I saw the collection in the Mango shop on Friday. I wasn't very impressed, it's very Instagrammy derivative and that usual Mango thing of looking quite nice in pictures but not in reality.

The Fountainhead is low on the political rantings, it has the larger theme of individualism vs collectivism but a lot of the whackier US Libertarians put a lot of stock in it, especially one speech in court.

I don't think she knew FLW, she just took him as an inspiration point after she decided that the main character would be an architect. She did choose wisely, the profession works very well within her theme.

I should probably rectify my previous statements on Dutch weddings, boring and over in twenty minutes are more reflective of the Holland provinces, in the east and the south they have larger and longer weddings and are more generous with the wedding gifts. And obviously those with a recent-ish migrant background have massive weddings and are actually enjoyable to go to.

OP posts:
banivani · 11/10/2021 09:41

Gainsbourg collection: Logged on and immediately was filled with hatred over black and white scrunchy photographs that don't show the clothes. You're a mail order company (essentially) get over yourselves. I can't even comment on the clothes. I can't see them.

Prefer Pernille collection at least on website. I like the colour of the "night blue" wool coat - it's a good, versatile colour that is Not Black but quite close. Other than that it's all a bit drab, isn't it. Black, beige, icy blue. Welcome to Stockholm (Copenhagen) bitches.

I'm at work atm (in a meeting that's giving me the rage because the manager in charge is so badly prepared and it's unacceptable in a political meeting -- I'm just keeping the minutes so plenty of time to seethe) in my new, cottagecore (as my daughter pointed out) embroidered Arket blouse. So that's kept Grin. Will also keep blue Arket shirt but the rest goes back!

Floisme · 11/10/2021 10:41

You managed better than me bani - I couldn't even get the photos to upload so I just had little squares of tiny text on my phone. I got as far as 'perforated bralette' and headed for the exit button. I'll check out the Mango collab as those photos look nice Red although they're not my favourite store.

Thanks to everyone who's posted blazer suggestions. I'm having a pause while I think through what it is I really want as although I've been banging on about 'oversized' I'm not sure that's quite it. Sorry Blush
I think I said before what I might actually want is a man's suit jacket i.e longish, not fitted at the waist, back vent, inner pockets, no fancy stuff. But finding one it to fit on the shoulders is the thing. I've been looking at teenage boy's jackets which look as if they might be the right shape but so far only seen them in nasty, shiny fabrics (just what a teenage boy needs).

Hope you and your daughter are still ok quirky

Welcome back Volte (I keep wanting to ask what your previous name was but obvs I won't).

Xing have you had your next consultation yet?

botemp · 11/10/2021 11:02

I did spot this Margaret Howell blazer in Harris Tweed on eBay today Flo, but I suspect it's much too big for you. But I think this is sort of what you're looking for, a sort of throw it on thing that could almost be a coat?

Here's a better overview of the Charlotte Gainsbourg collab with Zara.

OP posts:
XingMing · 11/10/2021 15:32

Bonjour! I haven't done anything interesting in clothing for ages, apart from trying to buy a couple more soft bras, which have been returned.

I had my first oncology consult on Friday, and great news -- ta da! No chemo. I have a short one tomorrow, to prove I can hold my breath on an inhalation for 20 seconds, and there's one big planning consult in the works, to sort out all the tattooing etc before radiotherapy week, which is likely to be in three or four weeks. That will be 5 x 45 minute sessions (about 43 minutes faffing apiece and about 5 minutes in short bursts of radiotherapy). Plus estrogen suppressing tablets, to remind me of the negative bits of menopause.

So the holiday trip has gone for a burton, as it would be slap bang in the middle. Once I have dates, we shall push off to the Marches for a few days being spoiled in a nice hotel. (There is a very nice shoe shop in Hereford.) Needs to be dog friendly as XingDog will be joining the party... and we're also free for a godson's 30th birthday party which we couldn't have done otherwise.

Hope red can work out a family trip to Argentina and Elle has a wedding outfit sorted. Bani's musings on folk clothing and politics were interesting, and I liked the tops you kept. Quirky, fingers crossed for you and your daughter. Bo's ability to track and search leaves me stupified, but that jacket looks vast... does the 52 indicate chest size?

XingMing · 11/10/2021 15:33

Welcome return to VolteFarce...

quirkychick · 11/10/2021 16:48

Shangpie, that MaxMara grey blazer is gorgeous and I also really like bo's Margaret Howell tweed one too. I don't need more blazers, though.

Thank you for everyone's kind thoughts. Dd2 and I are positive but luckily dp and dd1 and negative. I have felt tired/achy and a bit coldy, but actually feel more myself today. Interesting that it's not just the UK, that has confusing guidelines. The track and trace app, did actually give me a massive list of other symptoms. There is an outbreak at dd2's school, it would appear.

It sounds as if you are being well looked after, Xing. I hear you on the oestrogen suppression, though, as someone who has recently started HRT, I, now know the difference.

quirkychick · 11/10/2021 17:31

I was also going to add, I bought an old John Rocha Debenhams collab cape/cardigan in chunky charcoal knit from Vinted a while ago. I have been living in it at home. I really like it, but feel like it's my covid cardigan and I might not want to wear it after. When I feel a bit better, I take a pic.

Floisme · 12/10/2021 09:49

bo if you ever get tired of architecture I'm sure you'd be much in demand as a personal shopper. Thanks and yes, that MH blazer is the kind of thing although, as you say, it's big - I think 52 would be a Large (poss XL?) in a men's sizing, or at least it would be in the UK. It inspired me to revisit MH website - just to look, they're the best part of £1000 new - but the tweed blazers in her current collection look very long and might be more like a coat on me.

Thanks for the Charlotte Gainsborough link - it looks much more wearable than I thought and has reminded me of a faded black denim shirt that I charity shopped many years ago Angry

Excellent news Xing

Glad you and your daughter aren't feeling too bad quirky - I've totally lost the plot over what the symptoms are now.

So according to a text from my GP I have now reached the flu jab years. Lovely.

botemp · 12/10/2021 10:22

I'm very relieved you'll be spared chemo, Xing, shame about the holiday but it sounds like you have a great alternative planned.

Yes 52 in men's blazers is related to a 52 inch chest. I think it's actually an XXL (men's standard sizes go much bigger Hmm)

Flo, you've gotten me all misty eyed that Sue Townsend isn't around anymore as we're now robbed of Adrian Mole: The Flu Jab Years Sad

The Charlotte Gainsbourg collab had me hankering for the pared back motorcycle style ankle boots. But I have a pair that I haven't worn for quite some time, it has buckles so not quite the same minimal and je ne sais quoi feel of the CG's pair but it might just be the time to revisit them with some baggy (but not too wide) jeans instead of the skinnies and leather leggings they used to be worn with.

You know, I wouldn't want to be a personal shopper in the telling people what to wear kind of way (I struggle enough with this in my current line of work already, give me a demanding person who knows what they want over a clueless and hapless one any day) but I wouldn't mind running one of those concierge type services that find impossible things. The only thing putting me off is that those tend to almost exclusively cater to very wealthy people of the asshole persuasion.

ToEllewithIt · 12/10/2021 10:43

Xing, I’m so glad that you’re escaping chemo, though the rest of the treatment sounds plenty onerous enough. Is the tattooing for eyebrows? I have some nice soft bras from Uniqlo – don’t know if you’ve tried there.

Quirky fingers crossed that you continue to improve and that the others don’t get it.

Red I actually had a Ghost dress for my “debs” (prom) back in 1999. I was looking at the photos the other day. It was black bias cut slip style with spaghetti straps. If I still had it I could wear it today, no issue. That 90s style is right back in style. I found a dress that I already have that’ll do, but thanks for thiking of me. What a pain about not being able to effectively trave to Argentina. I hope you get to visit soon.

I like the look of the Charlotte Gainsbourg T-shirts and I also thought that this backpack was very nice. Slight The Row vibes, no idea what the quality is like though. Someone was looking for a work backpack, but I can’t remember who.

The Pernille Te (as she is to me ever since I misread her Insta handle as “Pernille Te is Back” thinking she was heralding a return from somewhere) is frankly a bit blah. The navy coat is the only item that would interest me.

I raided my existing wardrobe and have a black midi dress that should work for the wedding and means I can save the money for something fab post-baby. It is black which I’d usually avoid for a wedding, but I have a red hat and shoes that I think should lift it enough to get away with. I think people are often slightly sneery on mumsnet about the excess of Irish weddings, but they are great fun.

botemp · 12/10/2021 10:59

I liked that bag too but I'm not a fan of backpacks much, if it could be worn on the shoulder I'd be all over it.

I assumed the tattooing is for newly constructed nipples, they usually make those out of ordinary skin if the old ones can't be used and then the tattooing is to colour them in. I've always wondered how you go about choosing a colour, imagining it with those paint chart colour swatches.

I vaguely remember attending my first wedding, I had my prettiest dress on (a pink monstrosity with roses, actually not so much a monstrosity, it was very cute but if I were to wear it as an adult it would be a monstrosity) and was furious. It was my aunt's wedding and she was very heavily pregnant and decided to wear a men's shirt where I had been so looking forward to some white cupcake monstrosity. All of their friends were anarchists and squatters so it wasn't really a wedding like I'd imagined it from seeing it on TV. My grandmother certainly tried to make it so, getting everyone who would listen to her to dress in their finest and having floral things and it was in the 'nice' city hall (historical but no longer in administrative use except for weddings but you had to pay extra, you can only get married in city hall here, hence why they're generally short and dull) but it was a bit of a shitshow and my GM's friends all made passive aggressive comments about how I outshone the bride (directed at my aunt, not me, but still). I don't really know why they decided to get married, it wasn't the done thing in their friend group and their parents really didn't have that much influence. They're the most boring conventional couple ever these days though. My uncle was more on the periphery of that scene for the music than the lifestyle so maybe he was a bit more old fashion conventional, I'd really have to ask.

botemp · 12/10/2021 11:01

Sorry, condensed version of my giant wall of text wedding ramblings, the little child in me would quite enjoy the exuberance of an Irish wedding. I still feel robbed.

OP posts:
XingMing · 12/10/2021 13:21

Elle, for some reason it had not occurred to me to look at Uniqlo's underwear, an oversight I shall correct this afternoon.

The tattoos are not nipples (ouch) or eyebrows, thank heaven, just three freckle sized dots to guide firing the radiotherapy machine to zap any remaining malignant cells. It mainly involves lying motionless and half-naked on a hard cold bench in an very air-conditioned room being put through a scanner.

My first bridesmaid's outfit (for my aunt's new year wedding in the early 1960s) was a turquoise velvet dirndl with a swansdown trimmed muff... it was very pretty, although my DSis ruined the photos by loosing her two front teeth just before the big day.

Off to Uniqlo... will report back.

botemp · 12/10/2021 17:09

I don't know if you're looking for something with any support or just something that's barely detectable on the skin Xing, but if the latter Chantelle Soft Stretch is heavenly to wear, you forget you're wearing it and most of it is one size so no need to guess online. There are some with inbuilt light padding over the nipples for modesty that do have a size. In terms of support it keeps everything in place but it's not proper scaffolding type stuff.

Ah, the new nipples don't have much sensitivity which is why they always try to preserve the original ones, tattooing them is not insanely painful like actual nipples would be. Healing of the modified nips is also an issue, I believe it's quite susceptible to necrosis. I'm pleased in your case it's just a few dots for radiotherapy instead.

Meanwhile, I'm drooling over an Australian brand that's all lovely linen here, I was googling a TV show but misremembered the title (I was looking for Wellington Paranormal), I'm half convinced Google orchestrated me finding a lovely linen brand instead. Shame about the high import fees and lack of European retailers Sad but I know there's Antipodeans on here, enjoy Envy

OP posts:
XingMing · 12/10/2021 21:17

You are so tuned in to the best version of stuff bo; those are the ones I am wearing on repeat. But I need another one or two, and I wondered if there was anything better? Joy of joys, I don't need scaffolding any more. The wounds are still a bit weepy, but my nipples have been preserved - moved higher - but intact and healthy AFAIK.
