time so sorry, I completely missed the earthquake news - are you ok?

ToEllewithIt · 22/09/2021 09:52

They’re abattoir-lite boots quirky, maybe for the occasional visitor, say a H&S inspector or the head of abattoirs visiting from HQ. They’re very nice, love the colour. I quite fancy a pair of full length abattoir boots, but I have lug boots so there’s maybe too much of an overlap. I like these ones in the black. The white is a little too literal of an interpretation.

That’s a shame that neither pair of trousers were quite right flo

Love the sound of the green swing jumper xing

Ooh I do like that coat botemp. It is a real chameleon though. In the first photo I would have been less enthusiastic, but the colour in the second photo is great. Have you decided on the burgundy coat yet? Very temped to see if they have it locally.

I know what you mean about those knitted dresses. I wonder if that Lou Lou one has been discounted. I don’t think I want to spend a lot on one I’ll check out Mango – that one is lovely. Self-Portrait seem to have also pivoted into that space a bit. Their previous offering of cut out embroidery and ruffles wasn’t really my jam, but I like their new stuff. Albeit it seems to some with a hike in prices which would want to be matched by a corresponding increase in quality. I’m still muddling through in my existing wardrobe for now. I have a big meeting today so that trusty vintage Chanel dress is getting an outing as it’s nice and loose. You’re absolutely right that the trends at the moment mean that I will need to buy virtually nothing. Jumpers are oversized as are blazers and there’s always Cos for trapeze type tops.

Ah yes those are like the Gia Couture X scandi blogger boots or maybe they are but I think Gia couture changed their name to something else now. I'm just too short for them Sad (unless I wear them with micro shorts which is not ideal in an abbatoir).

I'm still deciding on the burgundy coat, I'm very slow with trying it on with things but leaning towards keeping. I do need to try it on my bike as it has no vent in the back. Zara does have stock information of their items for stores these days (hidden in the drop down menus below the item description) so you can check if they have it locally, the burgundy seems to be back in stock again online here.

The Mango dress was last season and sold out all over France because of the pregnant influencer. I only spotted it on Vinted but they were selling it for more than the original price. The page does still seem to be live with a stock notification option so it does look like they'll be bringing it back link.

Loulou dress in white discounted at LVR with an extra 30% off with FR30.

OP posts:
timeisnotaline · 22/09/2021 12:46

The Loulou dress would be nice, in real life you’d see it was silk, but I don’t think I would wear a clingy white silk knit dress unless pregnant. There are a lot of knit dresses but I have quite a bit of maternity wear and knit dresses tick the same clingy box.
I may have missed the abattoir boots meme, perhaps if I’d slowly absorbed it I’d be thinking right now ooh look at those abattoir boots! Slip on AND they will fit no matter what size my stomach expands to- now that’s what I need! Grin
Green jumper sounds amazing Xing
bo I get the colour- it looks real seeing it on, and green almond is the perfect descriptor.
The earthquake was amazing. The whole house was shaking, sister in laws bike somehow thrown off their falling wall rack to the garage ceiling (no I can’t visualise how that happened either), a street nearby shifted up about 10cm, I don’t think we’ve ever had anything like it. I was on a call with a dozen other people all freaking out a bit! My sons childcare have realised they have no earthquake policy Grin

botemp · 22/09/2021 12:58

I'm glad you're all safe (aside from a traumatised bike) and can laugh about it. I'm petrified of them as we had to do a lot of earthquake drills and watch horrible school special documentaries about them, full on American scaremongering style. We were living abroad then but I don't think we were at risk of any, hurricanes we had plenty but we got no education on those Confused

OP posts:
timeisnotaline · 22/09/2021 13:13

We had hurricane drills at school in east coast US. Everyone going into the central school hall and sitting against the walls with head on knees. It was early primary school so I don’t remember a lot but I remember those!

botemp · 22/09/2021 15:12

Yeah I think east coast US it's different because hurricanes are rare and can be quite a sudden development from storm to hurricane with little notice. We had a full on hurricane season and more often than not a hurricane would weaken to a tropical storm it was just part of life.

Everyone had an emergency kit, you'd tape up the windows with crosses and bring the dogs in (who were restless fuckers for days in anticipation, much more reliable than the weather service tbh), no madness at the supermarkets over loo rolls, etc. Even without storms and hurricanes the electrical grid would often fall out or we'd get a letter not to drink the water for reasons so we were quite well adjusted to it all.

OP posts:
XingMing · 22/09/2021 15:12

Glad to hear that you've survived the earthquake without too much damage time.

Redandblue11 · 24/09/2021 13:58

Glad to hear all is good time must have been very frightening.

So specially for Flo, I went to the MH sample sale today, which is the last day so not ideal.
Unfortunately coats and knitwear was very limited in my size. The men’s had some coats in size s which I tried but even that was too big for me. Although some ladies in size 12 or plus were trying and looked very good and reasonably priced too , I think started at £120 ish plus depending on if they were thicker coats etc.
I tried a few things but there were communal changing rooms so couldn’t take photos there. But on the queue for it I tried a few stuff I am showing here.
A men’s green jumper in pure wool (a bit itchy for me but I am extremely fussy…); a gingham pleated skirt weird look is as I have my own pleated skirt under I thought it was nice for the right person ; a long white shirt and a blue tee shirt dress/long tee. I didn’t get any of these, although I can see why flo raves about the woman as the fabrics are lovely.
What I got but I cannot show you is two pair of winter trousers one dark navy and another green/brown very small tweedy type checks. The fit is very good, the green/ish pair in my size 10, which was cut right perfect high on the waist, the blue ones I tried on 10 but the cut was different and felt slightly tight on me so I got a size 12 which were slightly big but i still liked them and I can wear on my ‘bloat’ winter days Boxing Day, after NYE, January??
When I get round I will take photos and share.

botemp · 24/09/2021 18:55

Ooh I like the green men's jumper and the tee dress, also very much like your own skirt, Red.

Incidentally I was coming on to share a video from Margaret Howell about how one of their shirts is made . Figured Flo would enjoy it after mastering her own. I had seen that trick for getting crisp corners by pulling out a thread before but I think they do it differently, I need to study it closer.

Also was very happy to read this by Jess Cartner-Morley today which has a nice dig at Ms Kondo Grin but generally agreed with the sentiment of caring and mending, found myself nodding along to a lot of it and how I've been feeling about my wardrobe lately.

I also visited a new secondhand shop, also a chain, and also plastered with horrific slogans about how great you are for buying secondhand. Predictably, it was all overpriced tat. I'll steer clear of anything with slogans, it's clearly a trap 🧐 Not so much geared to the young uns though, I'd say maybe 30+.

Ha ha red I quite liked the 2nd skirt because of the band aroun

d the bottom, then realised it was your own skirt peeking through Blush

Looking forward to seeing the trousers when you get a chance.

Quirky loveeee the new boots, especially as they are stylish wellies! Fab! Abattoir light, butchery counter maybe?

Glad you are OK time

I've been hunting for a leather, leopard print, gold hardware belt for well over a year. I was in a bit of a posh shop on Tues and had a bit of a fuck it (accessories don't count as they do not exist second hand)moment when I saw one that was almost perfect, took it almost to the counter then realised at almost £150!!! It was plastic, very plastic, I'd been overcome by the shopping experience I think Grinso it went back on the shelf and I stomped off in disappointment.....

To the charity shop next door where I found the exact belt of my dreams, leather, small gold studs, leopard print, gold hardware and FOUR pounds.
The rest of the womenswear was complete and utter primark/h&m basics tat but I did get DH a cashmere Gant jumper for £6 and two unworn gant shirts for £4 each. This is DHs first foray into "preloved" (I'm easing him in with the buzz wordsGrinWink)

quirkychick · 25/09/2021 10:37

Love your own skirt, red, and I'm not usually a fan of pleated skirts. The tee dress and green jumper are great too.

70sduvet, I hope the boots will only be needed to keep out the rain rather than anything more gory! My previous ones were more elegant black, French ones, but they have cracks in them - kind of a deal breaker for wellies!

I think I have quite a few things that need mending/adjusting for autumn, too.

Floisme · 26/09/2021 09:34

Red you went, yay! Thanks so much for the report. I think that jumper would have gone home with me - love how it looks on you, but it's no good if it was uncomfortable. I'm also drawn to the skirt but that probably wouldn't have been a good buy for me as I have previous when it comes to buying skirts then not wearing them enough to justify. I'd love to see the trousers too. I must say it all looks very calm and civilised in the pics though I guess that's probably social distancing. One of these years I'll make it there!

Great find 70sduvet!

Thanks for that video link bo. I'll enjoy that, although I expect it'll shatter my delusions about getting a job in Margaret Howell's shirt factory. I also liked Jess Cartner-Morley's takedown of the 'get rid of all your clothes and then go out and buy more' philosophy.

I've been in another of those new big vintage stores with the sanctimonious signage. They seem to be springing up everywhere and, now that I've seen a few, it's striking how uniform they are, both in appearance and in stock, which is ironic given that the USP of vintage is that every item is unique. If they're not all a chain, they're certainly following a formula. I wonder who's behind them - what's Philip Green up to these days? (I am only half joking.)

Forgive me for ignoring the boot chat but I'm suffering from an inexplicable craving for some cowboy boots so I'm trying not to feed it.

Floisme · 26/09/2021 09:35

Red I forgot to ask, were they selling fabric too?

botemp · 26/09/2021 09:51

I'm not Red but when I went two years ago (maybe three 😱 effing pandemic) they did sell fabrics but it was up the stairs and a door to the side in a separate space so easy to miss if you weren't looking for it. I'd really like some MH fabrics, but I wasn't sewing then, kicking myself now Sad

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 26/09/2021 12:45

They were not selling fabrics … although now I am bot sure if i missed it… but I don’t think so as I tend to look at everything and everywhere …
Here are the wool trousers in my size, the light is not great so in the photos comes darker and then in the close up comes lighter. Also from the front the angle of the photo doesn’t do it justice. It has this clever thing of coming a bit out your hips to give me hips and waist, it is 100 wool and lined with viscose and not itchy at all.

Here is the other pair of trousers in a size up, the cut is different, slightly loose but with a belt they are good. These are dark navy in super thick cotton.
Btw - both trousers are now officially the most comfortable trousers I own.

Yes I loved the jumper too. But I know how fussy I am … no point really for me.

I also liked the dress and the skirt when I tried it properly, but I had a budget Grin otherwise a few more things would have come my way, I would have probably got a coat if there were on my size too though not that I need coats, but we love coats on this thread. The other stuff I thought it can wait till May.

My own skirt is a Bimba y Lola find with tags in a consignment store a few weeks back.

I never got a linen blazer … so now I am eyeing up this Marella max Mara woollen jacket on eBay … might go well with jeans/long dresses / long skirts ?

The belt sounds great duvet , share it if you can … I am also in the hunt for belts …

Redandblue11 · 26/09/2021 12:59

I feel like I am drip feeding, but I watched the MH video of how to make a shirt with my 12 ds and he really enjoyed it, and told me how interesting and asked me if his school shirts were made that way… we had a good chat but I am chuffed he enjoyed the video.
He is now asking me to have a next pair of trainers which are fully degradable / not plastic / not sure what the best thing is for a kid which will only use them for 6 months etc etc …

botemp · 26/09/2021 13:19

Trousers look good Red, very useful back to the office wear that can be dressed down or up depending how slobby or not everyone has gotten.

There are some YouTube videos from countries like India and Bangladesh, small scale tailors but they have a lot of videos funnily enough about boy school shirts. They're made slightly differently on account of budgets and materials are very thin on account of temperatures but the principles are the same.

I'm trying to remember where I read about them but it was about trainers that could be thrown on the compost heap after use. That might be useful to the gardener in you and appease your DS.

I finally got round to ordering the shearling Birkenstocks I was eyeing as the last of the late summer weather ended yesterday. They arrived today but I'm a bit Confused maybe I got a dud pair but I'm wondering what I liked about them. The suede looks a bit cheap and flat (maybe a steam and a brush would fix that and that's why they looked better in the shop?) the shearling seems to be detaching at the edges (I assume the rest will stay put and it's just remnant floof but still...) And to top it all off they only just fit and not exactly comfy. I guess these things might change but I'm feeling deflated by them so unless I got up the wrong side of the bed today and feel different about them tomorrow they're going back.

I still haven't gotten out my autumn/winter things but have decided I'm keeping the Kassl coat anyhow. I've been trying it over whatever I've been wearing over the last weak. It seems to look great on everything even when seasonally it makes no sense.

Is that the ‘almond’ coat? I cannot remember if I commented about it but I think is a great decision!
