What happened to S&B?

I used to browse this topic regularly several years ago and I enjoyed the recommendations of Ash high tops, Net A Porter sale items and high end make up, amongst other things. Loved reading what LetThemEatCake had been buying.
I've been having migrating over to here again recently after a long time away and it's all Roman Originals, granny sandals and things that "wash well".
WTF happened?

Lockdown man, Lockdown is what happened.

thedevilinablackdress · 15/05/2021 19:27

We've wised up. Never again will we buy uncomfortable footwear or dry-clean only clothes.

Selkie1961 · 15/05/2021 19:29

@letthemeatcake loved bags. I remember her.
Where is she!?

Divebar2021 · 15/05/2021 20:01

It must have been a long time ago if people were recommending Ash hi tops.

I'm with you Jan, I miss the old wise and avid crowd Sad

ElspethFlashman · 15/05/2021 21:14

We just got old and boring tbh.

We long to look foxy but know that Phase Eight is forgiving on the tum.

Littleguggi · 15/05/2021 21:50

Ahh gosh the 'wash well' thread was mine 🙈🙈 definitely blaming lockdown and getting old!

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 15/05/2021 22:07

Letthemeatcake 😲 I still remember her wedding dress pic 😍

Tethersend was my OG S+B fave. Loved her dress threads back in the day.

I remember being pretty vile on the many Fly boots threads. I thought (still think!) they were the ugliest things ever.

S+B has always been divisive. It's why I love it!

LuckyMcDucky · 15/05/2021 22:21

I actually think fashion has become more practical/functional lately and the S&B board has followed suit!

I haven't seen anyone IRL in tottering heels, a dry clean only body hugging shift dress or massive blow dried hair etc, for about a decade.

So, maybe that's what's happened.

1988Username · 16/05/2021 08:35

Least it's stuff I can afford now 😅

Floisme · 16/05/2021 09:42

There was a credit bubble. It burst. Jobs and homes lost.
Then austerity.
Now a pandemic.
Sorry op, I know you said you wanted lighthearted, but I think the only surprise is that we're still here at all.

Floisme · 16/05/2021 09:45

We can still argue though if you're missing that? Start a 'shorts over 40' thread and see what happens.

NotMeNoNo · 16/05/2021 13:47

MN has been around over 15 years, inevitably some of us are getting on a bit.

Yep, and it's not like younger folk come in to replace.

That said, make a thread anyway - where to shop? There's still posters here who don't shop at 'granny' places but we probably keep quiet. I like the folksy florals in Superdry, the quality of the jeans that surf brands offer, and I love the eco-friendly, sustainable brands that you can get at stockists like Two Seasons.

This is part of the problem, and I think the younger people who come along and are honest, fresh, and stylish are chased off by the crowd of people insisting that it's most important to be comfortable and who cares what anyone else thinks, trends are stupid.... Case in point this thread - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/4220589-Is-it-frumpy-to-wear-leggings-under-a-dress

This is a style forum, but I have seen multiple threads get taken over by people who claim not to give two figs about if they are perceived as stylish!!!

chestnutshell · 16/05/2021 14:37

Im 30. I love clothes and fashion. If I actually posted the kinds of things I wore on here I feel like some of the people on this board would chase me down and throttle me with the pearls they’d normally clutch.

Every time I come on here it’s either hideous “who cares about fashion, just be comfy” smock dresses or people determined to dress like what they imagine a Parisian wears when you’ve never been to France.

thedevilinablackdress · 16/05/2021 14:51

I quite like the backlash against ageism and the use of the word frumpy. I aspire to being both comfy and stylish.
I do think we could all be a bit kinder. The past year seems to have made online debate much grumpier, even in S&B.

Nightbear · 16/05/2021 15:02

It’s really sad because the Stylish Ones were an important resource for those of us who don’t really know what to do with clothes when a wedding, job interview or a drinks-with-friends-in-an-actual-bar came up.

The advice was really helpful and tailored to clothes size and budget.

Floisme · 16/05/2021 15:25

I miss the fighty handbag threads. I'm not even into bags.

Some of them are still on the Vogue threads I think.
thedevilinablackdress · 16/05/2021 15:30

There was a recent handbag threat that took me right back
OP: I want a swanky bag, should I get a Bayswater
MN handbag aficionados: OMG no! A Chanel 2.55(?) or nothing

rosiedeus · 16/05/2021 15:32

Well I ave creeping thread veins on my left knee. It was fine before and only visible on the inside of my knee, but this year they've crept towards the front Confused
I'm trying to figure out what to wear with that. Apart from long wafting impractical dresses...

Oh God, are they beyond the pale now? I live in mine.
