What happened to S&B?

I used to browse this topic regularly several years ago and I enjoyed the recommendations of Ash high tops, Net A Porter sale items and high end make up, amongst other things. Loved reading what LetThemEatCake had been buying.
I've been having migrating over to here again recently after a long time away and it's all Roman Originals, granny sandals and things that "wash well".
WTF happened?

There are a lot of threads where people recommend stuff that is out and out fugly. I wish you could see a photo of the person making the recommendation because then you would know whether to take it seriously not or not Grin

*thread
I don't think any threats were made!

rosiedeus · 16/05/2021 15:46

I'm sick. I'd like o know what to wear, bu fear posting on here. I don't want to just be comfortable. Or wear what ever and ignore my awful spider veined knee. I've put on weight and my boobs mean any sac like dress makes me look enormous. It's depressing wearing workout gea all damn day. I want to dress nicely again!

Serpenta · 16/05/2021 16:09

I think the younger people who come along and are honest, fresh, and stylish are chased off by the crowd of people insisting that it's most important to be comfortable and who cares what anyone else thinks, trends are stupid

True. People getting mortally offended because some people on the S&B board think leggings look naff or that skinny jeans have had their day. And then chastise people for being into fashion and anyone who follows fashion is a fool.

I still use the word frumpy and have no plans to stop.

Absolutely this! 😂

@Floisme

There was a credit bubble. It burst. Jobs and homes lost. Then austerity. Now a pandemic. Sorry op, I know you said you wanted lighthearted, but I think the only surprise is that we're still here at all.
Doesn't have to expensive fashion though. Just some decent, trendy, good quality high street stuff. The things I've seen on here over the past few years are just absolutely hideous.

And also, sometimes just nice to look at pretty things even if you'll never be able to afford them.

What, all of them? Some undoubtedly but I’ve seen recommendations that have made my mouth water. Usually beyond my means, sadly.

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 16:43

Tbh, I think this thread is a bit of a dick move. If you don't like the board, you can...you know, go elsewhere. Or maybe fashion has moved on and you haven't kept up as you think you have.

I've held my tongue, but your latest posts make you sound like someone who can take blunt truth, which is why I've said this.

Also, younger generations, (I'm guessing you're a little older than I am), aren't mean girls about fashion. That in itself is...well, unfashionable, ironically!

PassGo · 16/05/2021 16:45

I'd like to be able to talk about more ordinary types of S&B. Maybe this section could be divided into two? One for those who are greatly into clothes/makeup, and a different section for those who aren't but would still like to chat about it.

Well obviously not all of them. But I'd say in the past it was about 80% style, 20% dross and now it's more the other way round.

You really have been away a long time! Grin

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/05/2021 16:46

I miss the S&B swap shop threads and pinterest swap board. I still wear a fab Cos top I got on there.

JemimaMuddledUp · 16/05/2021 16:54

I chuckled to myself earlier when I saw scarves listed as something which was really dated. I've been here long enough to remember when the MN scarf was a thing.

I think fashion just has become a lot more casual, and the pandemic has accelerated the trend. S&B probably just reflects that. Although I have to admit that I'm itching to go shopping for real clothes after a year at home, I'm just not sure that Cottagecore floaty dresses are the look for me...

Cocolapew · 16/05/2021 16:59

S&B used to dominated by the same bunch of people who thought they where the epitome of style and were plain fucking rude to anyone that didn't fall into their idea of style.
Now theres a broader range of posters venturing on to it.
It can't always be Hush, All Saints and Chanel foundation😴

Serpenta · 16/05/2021 17:00

Cottagecore baffles me. As does the 1980s Sunday school teacher look that's suddenly everywhere. The anti-sex look.

I agree.

This thread reads to me like; "oh I miss the days when I could bully people who had different views to me on fashion. So much better when we could exclude the ghastly poor too". I'm sure that wasn't op's intention as she wanted light-hearted, but it does read a bit like that.

Campervan69 · 16/05/2021 17:04

Ooooh yes, the mumsnet scarf Grin

Floisme · 16/05/2021 17:07

I don't mind strong opinions, in fact I quite enjoy the odd - ahem - full throated argument. And I think devil's right that we're all on a short fuse at the moment. But what is starting to piss me off is not being able to talk about what's in or out of fashion without someone dropping in to tell you they don't care and yabba yabba doo.

It's the equivalent of me posting on a cat owners board that I'm not interested in cats. Only hang on, I wouldn't dream of it.

I take getting dressed seriously which means sometimes, guess what, I'm going to like something you don't and vice versa, and I'm never going to apologise for that.

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 17:12

I agree with you @Floisme, but that isn't what op is saying. She isn't saying people on here declaring they don't care about fashion/style is a bit odd (it is). She is saying they fashion people favour on here isn't to her taste and is therefore dross Hmm

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 17:14

To which I say; "go somewhere else then instead of starting some call to arms / bitch fest thread, cos that isn't a good look, no matter how much you're rocking your ash high tops"

Cocolapew · 16/05/2021 17:14

But what is starting to piss me off is not being able to talk about what's in or out of fashion without someone dropping in to tell you they don't care and yabba yabba doo
This is a fair point, and it works both ways. There is a thread atm about Roman Originals and someone is on it saying they would never dream of shopping there. Who cares if you don't want to shop there, it has nothing to do with what the op is asking.

Floisme · 16/05/2021 17:14

Yeah I know the op wasn't saying that - I was agreeing with someone upthread about posters dropping in to 'chastise' us but the thread's moving too fast for me!
