I used to browse this topic regularly several years ago and I enjoyed the recommendations of Ash high tops, Net A Porter sale items and high end make up, amongst other things. Loved reading what LetThemEatCake had been buying.
I've been having migrating over to here again recently after a long time away and it's all Roman Originals, granny sandals and things that "wash well".
WTF happened?

Post the threads you want to see, then?

@AnyFucker

Haven’t you noticed ellapaella’s posts ? She is the new, pandemic-stylee LTEC Smile

I love her dressed down style

Not seen them no, but I'll have a search. I am rarely on here but had just noticed a major difference in the type of posts.

It's called Style and Beauty, not Stylish and Beautiful. Room for all tastes and budgets I reckon.

Exactly!
ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 17/05/2021 07:51

We’ve become old Grin

We are at the stage our mum were, when they said they would stick with blue eye shadow and a trendy perm forever

Or our grannies when they said they were going to stick with elasticated midi skirts (and look! That’s back in now)

MN s&b is full of people who are saying their skinny jeans will be prised from their cold dead hands Grin

Skinny jeans being the blue eye shadow and perm of the 80s

Lots of people on here have decided to no longer follow fashion, they will stick with what they like now

I think it’s an age thing + environmental concerns+ pandemic

And on top of that we all have not been out for a year!

Floisme · 17/05/2021 09:02

I'm going to hazard a guess that the majority of those saying their skinny jeans will be prised from their cold dead hands are younger posters who have never worn anything else and for whom the change feels genuinely threatening.

Meanwhile older posters have seen it all before, several times. We know that a) once it starts, it's inevitable but b) it takes years and c) that everything else - shoes, tops - will change too and d) that your eyes will adjust, the new look will become the norm and the old look will start to look odd.

In short, it will be fine. But there is nothing we can say that will convince younger posters. They just have to live through it.

Floisme · 17/05/2021 09:14

Ok I've re-read that and I'll adjust 'the majority' to 'significant numbers'. But the point stands. When did skinnies first reappear - early noughties? Lots of women in their mid thirties won't remember anything else. I'm not scared of flares - I've seen them come and go twice.

SummaLuvin · 17/05/2021 09:29

@Floisme I see where you are going with that train of thought, but I have to disagree that skinnies have been the dominant shape for that long.

I am mid twenties and I remember wearing bootcut and them being the most common shape until I was around 12-14ish. I remember the horrible ragged ends where they dragged on the ground as they were too long and I refused to let my mum turn them up. Cargo style trousers were also super trendy in that time, though not so much my thing. It was more around 2007, along with the emo movement skinnies took off (not saying they didn't exist before). So those 10 years older than me certainly will recall wearing other shapes into their early adulthood. Some people might hang onto the shape of their 'glory years', but that isn't because they don't know any different.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/05/2021 09:30

Totally right Floisme. How I remember the horror of first trying on skinny jeans when they came in. So tight!! Look at those thighs!!!

LuckyMcDucky · 17/05/2021 09:33

I also hated skinnies when they first came out. I think I started wearing skinnies towards the end of the noughties iirc. I think they took off maybe mid noughties?

IND1A · 17/05/2021 09:35

@Cocolapew

S&B used to dominated by the same bunch of people who thought they where the epitome of style and were plain fucking rude to anyone that didn't fall into their idea of style. Now theres a broader range of posters venturing on to it. It can't always be Hush, All Saints and Chanel foundation😴
I agree with this. And also with @Floisme.

I think that style has moved on OP and you haven’t.

Floisme · 17/05/2021 09:52

I don't always remember dates Summa but I do remember where I was when I first noticed skinnies were getting a grip. I was picking up my son from infants school and noticed several mums wearing them. I don't live anywhere particularly fashionable so it was a bit of a wake up moment. He's 23 now so definitely before 2007. I'll split the difference with you Smile

HelenHywater · 17/05/2021 09:59

I notice plenty of 30 somethings talking about Joe Browns, leggings under skirts and hotter shoes. I don't think it's anything to do with age. I'm not wearing skinnies or Hush thank you very much.

Personally I really like clothes, but cba to buy any if i'm just sitting at my dining room table working all day.

SunsetBeetch · 17/05/2021 09:59

Same. I thought even Kate Moss looked awful in them Blush

I am looking forward to wearing different styles now, just hoping I won't have to revamp too much of the rest of my wardrobe to suit.

Floisme · 17/05/2021 10:21

The story of my teens/twenties/thirties/forties:
You hear there's a new fashion in jeans and you think, 'What the fuck! Never!' Everyone agrees with you that they look ridiculous.

Someone breaks away and buys some and you know what, they do look quite good on her. But they won't look good on you and you're not a sheep, oh no, you only wear what suits you.

And then you see some really great shoes but they don't look quite right with your old jeans. You try some on and think 'nah', The next day you go back and before you know it, you're queuing at the till. You smuggle the bag back into the office and don't show them to anyone. The first time you go out in them you don't take your coat off. Nobody bats an eyelid.

The third time you wear them someone asks you where they're from.

A couple of years pass and now most days you reach for them without even thinking about it.

And then one day, years later, you see someone wearing your the same jeans you used to wear and you say to yourself, 'Why did I ever think they suited me?'

janlevinson · 17/05/2021 10:28

Of course style has moved on, and I've moved on with it thank you very much.
I think the OG fashionistas must have moved over to Instagram or something because no-one here seems to understand what I'm trying to say.

Have you checked out the Vogue threads? A lot of the old 'avid and wise' posters migrated there although it's hard to tell if they're still around cos of name changes.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 17/05/2021 10:41

Floisme I literally posted on another thread yesterday that my skinnies will be prised from my cold dead hands! I am 47. It stems from the memories of my bootcuts getting all raggedy as they dragged along the pavement and of wet shins when I stood in a puddle and the water worked its' way up!
I do also remember the first time I saw skinny jeans and thinking it made people look parsnip legged - funny how perception changes.

No I've not but I think that's the kind of vibe I'm looking for. I'll take a look. Thank you.

I definitely remember people posting on here about parsnip legs when skinnies first came about!
OP posts:
Floisme · 17/05/2021 11:02

I remember all the parsnip legs posts too. Truth be told I am not quite ready for flares (Pah to your bootcuts - they're all flares to me) either, not just yet. I really like the shape and the way my thighs just melt away in them, but I've never managed to work out the shoes (apart from platforms, which I adore but I just daren't - weak ankles).
But there are so many other styles around at the moment - that's the really great thing, I can't ever remember having this much choice before.

ExConstance · 17/05/2021 11:17

MN style and beauty goes totally over the top about one brand at a time. When I joined it was all Boden, thread after thread of nothing but Boden. After that it was hush, pages of posts about Hush stuff from those who seemed to be religious devotees. Now it is Toast, a bit of griping about customer service at the moment but again pages of adulation about the product. On the odd occasion I mentioned Toast a few years back I'd get a response of "certainly not! I don't want to dress in a beige sack" .
I love shoes and iIcannot abide the ugly sandal threads, there is a third way of combining style with comfort if you try hard enough.

janlevinson · 17/05/2021 11:41

I think the point I'm trying to make is this (and I put it very badly in my OP, but I'm not great with getting words out of my brain and onto paper/screen):
There will always be items that are currently "on trend". Whether each individual person likes them or not is irrelevant. The fashion world has decided that these items are "of the moment".
It used to be the case that MN would have various threads about these items and I enjoyed reading about them and browsing through pics. (Not all high end designer, lots of affordable options too). I am now finding that there are a lot more threads about clothing that is not on trend - case in point, Roman Originals. It doesn't matter whether you like it or not, there is nothing in that shop that is going to make it onto the pages of Elle.
I completely appreciate that everyone has different tastes, but I was just curious as to where all the stylish gals had gone.

OP posts:
OverTheRubicon · 17/05/2021 11:43

Totally agree! Lots of threads killed by people shouting that anyone of any age can wear anything and comfort matters most. Or people who read a thread by some poor soul looking for a genuinely on-trend or at least near trend look, and then recommend Fat Face / White Stuff / Sea Salt etc, or 'skinnies and ankle boots'... Which can all be lovely quality and flattering etc but are not even near on trend.

I go on Instagram instead, but do think there's a missing gap for advice and clothes chat people in their 30s who don't suit the crop top bonanza online right now, want a mostly casual and family friendly wardrobe, but also aren't ready for Hush let alone Hotter. Used to be here, but not any more!
