I used to browse this topic regularly several years ago and I enjoyed the recommendations of Ash high tops, Net A Porter sale items and high end make up, amongst other things. Loved reading what LetThemEatCake had been buying.
I've been having migrating over to here again recently after a long time away and it's all Roman Originals, granny sandals and things that "wash well".
WTF happened?

And it's still moving too fast for me! That was in response to Lucky

Floisme · 16/05/2021 17:17

Grin And I still can't keep up - I need to use the quote function more. No worries Lucky I didn't think you were having a go. And thank you

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 16/05/2021 17:19

My most annoying is the need for “natural fibres”... who cares?!! I want cool, on trend stuff that makes me look thin, I don’t care about natural!!

Bananaman123 · 16/05/2021 17:20

Hey I thought granny sandals were trending?

Sssloou · 16/05/2021 17:23

I think it has been a shape shifting year for fashion. Seasons have come and gone over lockdown, shops have been shut - nowhere to wear nice clothes (work or social) - nowhere to watch what others have been wearing. People have lost jobs, family members, confidence.

The most interesting thread I read recently was “dog walking fashion” - that’s the only opportunity we have had to “socialise” - and I was impressed but not surprised that there was a style standard for this activity.

I think with everything opening up slowly and the weather so uncertain everyone has the social anxiety of returning and no knowing what to wear or how to wear it.

Think all usual fashion/style energy and drive has only been theoretical the past year.

Everything is a bit discombobulated and whatever the new normal is hasn’t established itself yet.

Also do people now just follow Instagram influencers rather than here?

SummaLuvin · 16/05/2021 17:23

I think S&B has become a bit 'stale' because of the reasons I said up thread, but also we haven't had anything to dress up for since Autumn! Even outside dining I had to wear thermal leggings, boots, jumpers, and a coat to make it bearable so wasn't able to be as stylish as I had hoped. The influx of wedding guest threads has given me hope that now we have things to dress up for this board will be revived.

That made me laugh - and I like natural fibres.

This might indicate the demographic. Yes I want cool stuff that makes me look thin BUT with the peri menopause sweating like a bullock in crispy nylon isn’t a good look

Me as I don’t want huge sweat patches! On trend and thin looking is right behind though
LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 17:31

I think polyester, nylon etc is out of favour as supposed to be quite bad for the planet. But yes please to making me look about three sizes smaller if poss, ta Grin

PassGo · 16/05/2021 17:36

This isn't billed as an exclusive, expensive board, though. It has the very broad heading of Style and Beauty, which most people would assume meant all types, at all prices and for all tastes.

Obviously there are all kinds of people on MN. While some like and can afford designer wear, plenty might just want to dip in to S&B occasionally, and yes, this might include discussing high street styles.

If some people want S&B to be purely about luxury high-end fashion, for those 'in the know', then call it Exclusive S&B and interview people to make sure they have the 'correct' taste before letting them post.

Then the rest of us ordinary mortals can talk about more everyday and affordable Style and Beauty without the wealthy afficionados staring aghast.

@Bananaman123, granny sandals may be fashionable but, unfortunately for me, l am of an age where all you would think was frumpy granny rather than cool and ironic. I do enjoy clothes, though. They have to fit well and suit me but I cannot function properly for the day if I am not dressed as I would like. Joe Browns are my favourite and Radley and Ness handbags and purses. I like to think l dress well for my age and personality. As a private music teacher, who has been giving lessons online for the last year, l still need to look the part. I am not interested in all the latest fads but I hope l can still look stylish. Many people of my generation remember how their grandmothers dressed at a similar age. Mine favoured the smart look. Never trousers apart from gardening and rarely then. Hair shampooed and set with the cauliflower perm. Colours suitable for the older generation. We remember this and want different. Please bring back these threads.

nixonten · 16/05/2021 17:44

As an observer not a wearer, being a bloke. my comments are:
Where did all the dyes and pigments go?
I see colours in magazines but on the street I see black or navy or grey or sludge.
It was nice to see Dua Loopy showing her pins in stockings and suspenders. The look on her face! did she wear them for a dare? Nice yellow dress.
All I see is 120 den tights that steal the shape from any leg.

Serpenta · 16/05/2021 17:50

Go away

PegasusReturns · 16/05/2021 17:51

I had a reassuring shoe thread recently.

I was desperate for “mid” heels and kept getting pushed towards 4” beauties. Very reassuring Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/05/2021 18:03

We’ve all aged, that’s what’s happened. I was about 33 when I joined, now I’m 43 🤨.

Roman originals stuff still doesn’t appeal to me though.

thedevilinablackdress · 16/05/2021 18:54

I was never that interested when it was Ash and Hush and The Scarf. But now it's Toast and Tevas and Natural Fibres, it's more my thing. That's the way it goes. It'll change again in a bit.

Susannahmoody · 16/05/2021 18:57

The anti-sex look.
^

Haha spot on

Susannahmoody · 16/05/2021 18:58

I too only want to look thin

I don’t give a stuff about looking thin - that ship sailed some time ago. I do care about looking considered, stylish and not like every other bugger.
Beenaroundnow · 16/05/2021 19:06

Wise and avid was 10+ years ago. I’ve still got my ash high tops and several other things bought off the back of it! I guess that makes me both old and no longer fashionable Grin

The snarky self-styled Queen of S&B fucked off elsewhere so people felt they could post about decent stuff without having the piss taken.

Were you ageist back in the olden days as well, or is that a new thing?

almahart · 16/05/2021 20:56

I think lots of things have changed - partly we are older (I joined at 34 and am now 50Shock), the high street is different, I rarely see links to Warehouse, French Connection and the like now, and the pandemic has made all clothes talk a bit blah now.

Pre Covid there were still some great threads with posters getting good advice on wedding outfits and accessories etc.

There was a lot of Boden and Fly boot love in those days, it wasn't all superstylish by any means

AnyFucker · 16/05/2021 21:02

Haven’t you noticed ellapaella’s posts ? She is the new, pandemic-stylee LTEC Smile

I love her dressed down style

LuckyMcDucky · 16/05/2021 21:04

I also love EllaPaella.
