What jean will you be wearing in 2021?

So I'm seeing everywhere that skinnies are officially out, and pretty much anything else goes this year. Mom jeans look utterly terrible on me. I'm an hourglass with bigger thighs and a bum, and find that mom jeans and the other popular styles that were in the last few years accentuate my thighs and make my bum look saggy and flat. I think I've settled on some bootleg and flared styles but am also considering some ultra wide legged ones that I can wear with trainers and flats. But I do feel like a bit of a '90's skater kid. I'd love a cropped pair of jeans as well, but at 5'3 they can be trucker to pull off on me. I'm loving these styles in general though, so will try and find some that suit me.

A few of the "on trend" styles for this year. What do you think?
@ThinkAboutItTomorrow I have the lily with stretch and in my experience not at all. They are just a bit more comfy, I am large of thigh so need the stretch.
Thank you, sounds promising
Combats are just these ones. They are nice and soft and comfy.

I used to love my combats back in the day - thinking of getting these!

I had every style of combat going even the posh black shiny or not shiny ones from Karen Millen.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses

I packed skinny jeans in a few years ago - I kept one pair just in case, but I have never looked back!

I wear barrel legs (Whistles), balloon legs (Levi's), or cropped 501s. I'm quite hippy with a small waist, and the tucked in/short top and looser bottom works really well for my shape.

Like pp I bought those M&S balloon leg jeans this week. I wasn't sure size-wise, and ordered a 10 and a 12. The 10 feels like it is gripping my crotch a bit compared to my other similar styles, so I might keep the 12 and just wear a belt. I got the khaki colour which I thought would be nice with red on top, and white trainers, if it ever warms up. I also thought they came up pretty long - I'm 5ft 6 and got the regular, but for them to be at my ankle bone they need turned up. For £30 and then a Sparks offer for 25% off they can't go wrong though.

This sounds like me.

I think I'm due a trip to a shopping centre (open air and under cover) soon so will venture inside the Whistles, M&S and Levis shops there.

I will be wearing mid-blue and quite loose in the daytime, and darker and slimmer at night. Both rolled to the ankle. I’ve also bought some really quite baggy ecru ones, which I’m also rolling up, and which are filling the Club Tropicana shaped hole I was too young for in the 80s. I will be wearing all of them two at at time and joined together to make a pair, rather than an individual jean.

Lovemusic33 · 30/04/2021 15:20

I still wear skinnies as I am short and I find paired with some boots with a slight heal they make me look a bit taller and slimmer. I have bought some combats which I love and some Lucy and yak paper bag style trousers but they make look short and fat. Not sure I could ever go back to boot cut, reminds me of the 90’s and I don’t want to go back there 🤣

bendmeoverbackwards · 30/04/2021 15:25

I like skinnies when it's cold because you can tuck them into boots. That doesn't really work with other cuts!

Can I ask if you DON'T wear skinnies - what footwear do you wear with them? And what socks? I hate cold ankles! That bit of ankle between the bottom of your jeans and your shoes - should it be bare flesh or socked??

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 30/04/2021 15:42

bendmeoverbackwards you can wear any footwear with 501s...

Waves at the scattering of fellow 501s fans on the thread 👋

Standrewsschool · 30/04/2021 17:14

My unofficial survey this morning in Bluewater was that there are still loads of skinnies worn by people. I didn’t see mama mom jeans, but did see a few skinnier-straight jeans (not skinnies, but not loose). Didn’t see any flares.

Went to m and s - big choice of jeans there. Also some camouflage trousers (and tops). Is camo back in this year?

Sickoffamilydrama · 30/04/2021 18:01

I'll go against the grain and say flares and wide legs suit me. But jeans are always a massive trying on mission!

I quite fancy some of these www.freepeople.com/uk/shop/just-float-on-flare-jeans/?category=flare-jeans&color=041&type=REGULAR&quantity=1&size=4733

bendmeoverbackwards · 30/04/2021 23:48

I’m too heavy with wider shoulders than hips. What should I be wearing?

Sakura7 · 01/05/2021 09:12

I ordered these yesterday:

www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-high-rise-slouchy-mom-jeans-in-stonewash/prd/22413012

I'm happy the trends are changing, it took me a very long time to even try skinnies and I was never fully happy with them. I'm a pear shape and don't really like the tight fit around my thighs.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 01/05/2021 09:19

I've still got my bootcut Levis from the 90s. All I need to do now is lose 2 stone to fit back into them

Sickoffamilydrama · 01/05/2021 10:07

bend I'd recommend just trying on loads of styles.

Next is good for this if you don't want loads of money being out of your bank account whilst you find the right pairs in that you can do it through the account and then return them.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 01/05/2021 10:20

bendmeoverbackwards straight or bootcut Id say because maybe you're a similar shape to me - a classic apple is fairly broad shoulders, big breasts, a smaller waist to hip ratio than a pear or hourglass has, smaller bum too, often fairly shapely legs - can look athletic when slim but exta weight goes onto breasts and tummy.

If that's you then honestly try 501s - the classic unisex ones. Measure your waist and buy for your real waist size, don't guess or go by the waist size your clothes size should theoretically correspond with.

FreekStar · 01/05/2021 23:30

Just told dd age 15 that I was going to get some bootcuts- she's horrified and said she will not be seen with me in them- they are just for teens apparently Grin

Don't tell her that on the other side of the world an almost 62 year old is wearing them - and has been for years Grin

withlotsoflove · 02/05/2021 06:30

Skinnies are everywhere still though - l see the younger kids haven’t given them up & Asos has masses! Smile

lockdownalli · 02/05/2021 07:28

I have opted for a slim bootleg with high rise.

This is the style that suits me best. I am medium height with a mum tum, huge chest, and skinny legs (don't I sound gorgeous!)

The slim bootleg shows off my slim legs but balances out my top heaviness.

lockdownalli · 02/05/2021 07:31

Oh - I would wear my 501s from the late 1980s if I could get back into them Grin

Ellpellwood · 02/05/2021 07:54

I've just ordered these to wear with trainers. HM vintage slim.

www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0799365002.html

My trouble is I wear jeans to work as we have no dress code, but I feel dark skinnies are ok for the office while massive baggy skater jeans are, well, not. Grin

I can't do flares again. I'm a 31 leg. Standard drags on the floor and short is too short. Summer will be fine as I have a few cropped straight pairs but I can't think past skinnies for my Grensons in winter.

DinosaurDiana · 02/05/2021 07:56

Skinnies for the rest of my life.
I look back at pictures of me in boot cut jeans and wonder why I did it !

VioletCharlotte · 02/05/2021 08:16

I'm wearing vintage Levi 502's. They're straight leg and taper in at the ankle, I got them from eBay. Really good fit and very flattering. I also bought some vintage 501's but had to size up to get them over my hips and they were just too baggy in the legs for me. Mom jeans look awful on me as I'm an hour glass. I'm not sure about flares! I wore them last time round but if I remember correctly, they were hipster. I'm not keen on high waist.

Itsallhere · 02/05/2021 08:21

I would be so interested to know whether these posters who say they will only wear skinnies for evermore, actually will still be wearing skinnies in 10 or 20 years. I remember feeling I could never ever change from bootcuts, but sure enough I did, when my eye finally got used to the new shapes. It’s so interesting how fashion changes our perception of what looks good, even if it does take some time to do so.

FreekStar · 02/05/2021 08:36

I agree @Itsallhere- I remember the same discussion on here over 10 years ago about skinnies- people asking what shoes to wear and everyone worrying that their feet looked big in them- ballet flats were the the recommended shoe of choice because then you didn't have clown feet!

EllaPaella · 02/05/2021 08:53

I have lots of different style of jeans and started wearing boyfriend jeans, Mom Jeans and and straight leg cropped jeans 4 or 5 years ago, they aren't new either and have been around for quite a few years. Recently I bought a pair of wide leg jeans from Zara but very much came to the conclusion that they do nothing for me these days.
I have a pair of Mom jeans that I can only wear with a few limited things from my wardrobe as they are hard to style and a baggier leg definitely requires more thought to what you wear on top to balance it out.
I can see that flares and the wide leg jeans can look great on some people and I'm not surprised they are having a come back but I am still not convinced by boot cut jeans - they still look so dated to me.
