For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I'm back for some skin help. So in general I'm really happy BUT using tret is messing with my foundation
Finding it's going patchy on certain areas, mostly my chin. Any bright ideas? I am LOADING hydration on, hydrating serums, mists, moisturisers, oils.... the lot but no joy
Usually don't like primers but I'm tempted to try and see if it helps
Doesn't feel dry to the touch and actually feels very smooth. It's not as obvious in the pic as tends to happen after it's been on a while but you can see the texture here

SallieSallow · 28/05/2021 20:51

I’ve no advice Queenpaw as tret makes my skin flaky and dusty and it looks worse with makeup on. I found it was better using a tinted moisturiser rather than a foundation and I couldn’t use powder with the exception of the hourglass ones.

I’ve given up on tret for now and not sure if I’ll go back to it tbh as tret face is such a nuisance, though now I’m a full time remote worker I might be more willing to put up with it.

QueenPaw · 28/05/2021 22:17

I took a few days off and used the EL futurist foundation which was better, except it comes off on a mask like crazy annoyingly
I'm just wondering if it ever sort of evens out.... I mean it's great for my acne and yes I want to help ageing but I do also want to wear foundation every day!
The other thing I've thought is to just stop applying it on my chin but then it migrates anyway and my acne is there mostly. Argh

Jedstre · 29/05/2021 14:07

Anyone who uses the Simple hydrating cleansing oil (I highly recommend it as an oil cleanser), it’s currently half price at Boots so only £3.49

I’m finding the Skin and me tret pretty good (have used dermatica previously). They sent me 0.04% tret (using 0.05 previously) with niacinamide and azelaic acid-which I haven’t used before. I haven’t had any dryness. They’ve increased the tret this month to 0.05

BabyPigeon · 29/05/2021 15:21

Very off topic but is anyone else waiting for the Lisa Eldridge new releases? The preorder is today at 4PM UK time. Grin
She put out some YouTube videos about the new products.

botemp · 29/05/2021 16:19

I can't make up my mind BabyPigeon, what are you getting? Initially I wanted it all after seeing the videos and then I remembered I haven't worn makeup bar the rare occasion for well over a year...

I like the look of the highlighter but a lot of them don't show up on my face (something to do with my olive undertones) but the lightest one looks like it has enough white in it to show up and then maybe a blush, I live a rosewood one and then maybe a lip gloss but I already have two of hers and I don't think I've worn those enough... But maybe I'm better off waiting to hear if it's any good first.

OP posts:
BabyPigeon · 29/05/2021 16:35

It's so hard to choose.
Since I don't have a liquid highlighter, I got one in the first shade because I'm pale with yellow undertones. I was trying to choose between the crystal nebula and cosmic rose and I went for the former in the end. I never use highlighter so no idea if I will like it, I prefer it to be very subtle. It does look pretty shiny in the videos.
Then I chose 3 blushes, because I could not make up my mind to just one: the pink soap one as it's so natural for day to day at work, mountain walk and island glow. I don't have any liquid blushes, so I went a bit mad. I intend to use mountain walk to try to fake sunburned cheeks and nose, if it ever gets hotter for more than 2 days in a row this summer. :))
As for lipsticks, I already have love of my life from an earlier release. I ended up choosing the red cherry one, atomic cherry, and painterly as it's a good nude for everyday. I like the formula, even if it's not the most resistant, it is very comfortable and I still wear lipstick under the masks.
I passed on the glosses because I already have 3 from last time. I like them but no need to add more.

All in all this is one of the very few beauty releases that I get excited about.
I'm curious what you end up getting. :)

botemp · 29/05/2021 16:50

I'm still thinking, I think the he highlighter is probably a lot more subtle in RL (the 'models' said so anyhow) as the light she uses is really bright and it's supposed to be seamless. I have two powder highlights though that rarely get used 🙈

I like the Dante's dream one for blush and thinking maybe another blush, I like pink soap but maybe it's too subtle for me, I like Venetian red too but it's probably quite similar to the Dante one, just brighter. Island glow intrigued me too, I may need to go back and look at mountain walk now.

I feel the same about the glosses and I don't really need another lipstick but of course I want a free pouch...

I’m sitting on my hands with the new LE stuff, partly because I’ve spent a lot of money on house stuff since I moved, but also because despite a great big purge I have still have way too much makeup and I don’t even wear it much anymore.

Same as Bo I find highlighters don’t really show up on me and neither do a lot of blushers, got a feeling a liquid one would disappear in minutes on me especially during summer.

BabyPigeon · 01/06/2021 18:53

@SallieSallow The only annoying thing is that whatever she comes up with sells out way too fast, now all the blushes are sold out, but oddly the highlighters are not. They will return eventually I assume. I totally agree with not buying stuff that will not get much use.

Off-topic, I just saw a video from Nadine Baggot, it's a yesstyle sponsored video and she ordered the timeless vit c serum from there.

Was that always an option I had no idea about?

botemp · 01/06/2021 19:48

Interesting, I didn't end up putting in an order. It's really nice weather now and that just reminded me that I don't wear blush or highlighter in summer.

I suspect the highlighter is more of a winter I feel a bit meh purchase than summer is here joy we have now. A bronzer version would have made more sense. I think it's probably also quite similar in product type to Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood filter which a lot of people probably already own.

Yes, yesstyle carries it but they're not an official retailer and I'm not sure exactly but I believe YS is a sort of marketplace, a quick scan shows 3 separate Timeless CE Ferulic listings one of which is a packaging I don't recognise but maybe they changed it again.

From calculation, shipping to SK from the US, then sitting in a warehouse until you buy it and then usually three weeks to get to Europe means it's unlikely to be very fresh. Buying from Amazon US would be less risky but still risky.

OP posts:
BabyPigeon · 01/06/2021 20:16

I know what you mean, talking about bronzer, Wayne Goss has a bronzer/contour duo that looks really good. But it's available only from beautylish....
I have not tried the CT flawless filter, but I was tempted. I tend to think the products are overpriced.
So ordering from yesstyle is problematic because of freshness issues. I didn't realize it won't keep well before it's opened... :(

QueenPaw · 01/06/2021 22:18

I do love the flawless filter, I've been tempted by the auric version too

Tsmummy08 · 04/06/2021 07:36

Hi all, another one here tempted by the LE release but didn't splurge in the end.... I wasn't madly keen on the lipstick or gloss colours and really have more makeup than I'll ever need! I got the Muse lip kit in the Spring (lovely colour on me) but still rarely wear more than a tinted balm... maybe when masks are a thing of the past?

BabyPigeon · 04/06/2021 08:26

I think it's a great thing to not overbuy and consider how much will the products be used in the end. I really like all she released so far, starting with the velvet lipsticks (that I missed the first time she released), if she had a line similar to Charlotte Tilbury I would most likely only buy her stuff. I feel like not enough ppl talk about it on YouTube, but other stuff is overhyped.

@QueenPaw I will eventually get the flawless filter, I think the new 2.5 shade might be good for me. Auric is a another brand that not easily available in UK, maybe it will come at cult beauty or something. It does look interesting.

botemp · 04/06/2021 08:42

I think Lisa Eldridge's audience skews older while most of the beauty community on YouTube is young and they generally talk about anything a PR is pushing.

LE is a bit more old school, with big launches like her books and the first round of lipsticks the PR was mostly traditional media and not influencers. She's always had her feet in both worlds but I think for her audience the old ways probably work better. I know I'd never attempt buying anything of hers if it was like the usual influencer launches where you have to repeatedly click refresh and hope you get some items, with threats of it never to be restocked again while the whole thing is manipulated to be like that so you end up buying more or not what you intended and then oh miraculously due to 'exceptional high demand' there will be a restock blah blah.

I mean it's probably a money thing and the connections LE has available but I appreciate that she's putting out products that speak for themselves as opposed to getting a bunch of influencers proclaiming it's AHmAHZing before they're on to the next thing they're contractually obligated to breathlessly blab about.

OP posts:
BabyPigeon · 04/06/2021 14:31

You are right about the state of today's beauty space, a lot of brands rely on hype and FOMO to push products to consumers and they (over)use beauty "influencers" for this. I do think that there a growing current of anti-haul/no buy and low buy, but that can be counterproductive for people that make a living from reviewing products. They simply will have to buy more and more and review the latest.
I feel that Lisa Eldridge is in a different league, and that includes both her marketing and her products. I just wish her releases were more appreciated, similarly to the releases of the currently popular brands, like Natasha Denona and Pat Mcgrath (which are also very expensive).
Another brand that I feel is underrated is Wayne Goss, but I think it's because he has his own idea of beauty which does not necessarily align with the current hype/trend. I really appreciate that he is trying to come up with formulas that would look good on older people and he uses older models as well.

Skincare guru’s - Is Timeless Vit C available again? I see it’s on the website but it’s saying “Sold out”

I just can’t find a Vit C that I get on with. I’ve tried Paula’s Choice (Perfectly fine, but not as good as Timeless) Vichy Vit C (Saw zero difference) And also The Ordinary ascorbic acid which is like an oil and causing pilling.

I’m thinking maybe try Medik8?

Also, Dermatica... I’m on 0.5% Tret. Some dry skin on chin and forehead. How do I get rid? If I buff it with a towel for example, it just creates more dry skin?

I’ve been using it for almost 5 months. Make up now looks awful Confused Must be due to the dry skin, but I still don’t feel confident enough to go without make up. I was hoping to look a bit more flawless by now!

botemp · 07/06/2021 10:24

No, still not available in Europe, unfortunately. You can order it through Amazon US, it's quite easy, taxes all prepaid up front doesn't take long to get here. Currently being sold by recommerce and fulfilled by Amazon, that seller has a 100% satisfaction rating and tens of thousands of sales so could be okay, there's still a risk but Amazon customer service is good about these things usually. Just be mindful it comes in three sizes in the US now, 15ml, 30ml and 120ml and there's not much of a price difference between the first two, although 15ml is quite a handy size, and it's a fairly new addition so it can't be that old.

Wrt Dermatica, they seem to speed you through to the next dose really quickly, I'd reduce frequency and slowly build up again. Do you use a chemical exfoliator at all, that can help sometimes too, especially when used in the morning.

VillageFete · 07/06/2021 19:48

@botemp Thank you Bo, I may go down the US Amazon route as i’m yet to find a Vit C that compares to Timeless.

I have the DDG mild pads, which have mandelic and lactic acid in, I use them about once per week.

I just look really scaly around the forehead and chin, but not on my cheeks. I look awful with make up on!

PawsQueen · 07/06/2021 20:20

I'm the same around my chin (on skin and me)
My skin does look amazing without makeup though!
I'm using MAC waterweight which seems to be the best, and slathering on moisturiser before makeup

PawsQueen · 07/06/2021 20:26

Oh I've just remembered - someone recommended the ELF mint primer as a dupe for the milk hydro grip. Apparently that's meant to be good for dry skin but I haven't tried it yet
Don't think masks help either as all the hydrating formulas that look best just transfer straight off onto a mask Confused

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 08/06/2021 15:26

Villagefete just wanted to say I'm finding Garden of Wisdom 23% Vitamin C serum quite good. It's not as great as Timeless was, but it's super cheap (about £10) and goes on well for me under make up.

I feel your pain with the peeling skin, I had it for aaages with tret, I found make up made it worse as it highlighted the uneven patches.
Unfortunately it's just something to power through as best you can.

I did find when I introduced a niacinamide product it helped a lot, but it might have just been my skin acclimatising anyway. Even after about 2 years using some sort of retinol product, I still get occasional flaking around my nose.

VillageFete · 08/06/2021 22:35

@PawsQueen Yes, maybe I need to slap on more moisturiser, but it goes on fine and then throughout the day the scaliness/flakiness appears Shock

@Mulletsaremisunderstood Thank you, will take a look at that Vit C! So, should this peeling stop at some point if I power through? I’m using it every other night and it’s only started peeling since Dermatica released their new formula. Honestly, I look ridiculous with make up on but my skin isn’t flawless enough to forgo it.... Hmm

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 09/06/2021 10:13

VillageFete I'm not sure, everyone's skin is different. Apparently some people don't peel at all Envy.

I definitely had a few months of embarrassing peel at work (apparently I had some peeling skin hanging off my chin for most of the day and didn't notice until it was pointed out to me Blush. I think I've blocked out most of the memories of it tbh).

You could try lots of moisturiser and gentle exfoliation a few times a week, but you don't want to irritate your skin more so be careful. Also if you are using a foaming cleanser maybe switch to a cream cleanser.

You could also maybe apply it less often, and just accept that it will take longer for your skin to acclimatise. But with tret or any kind of retinol it is a long term improvement anyway, not a quick fix. So if low and slow suits you better and reduces the peeling then go for it.
