For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

Thanks @SallieSallow I think I will need to do a lot of reading back. It's coming with a free Foreo cleansing brush thing, am I right in thinking that they are too harsh for your skin and pores and I should avoid using it?

botemp · 02/05/2021 18:30

No, the silicone brushes are gentle enough, so should be fine to use unless you're supersensitive. If it's the tiny travel one, that is a bit of a disappointment though, it doesn't recharge so as soon as the battery runs out (I think it's a couple of months) you have to toss it out, feels like such a waste of resources to create an electronic device that's tossed out in such a short time.

@botemp What a coincidence, I stumbled upon her recently on YouTube and now she pops up in my recommended a lot. She seems ok so far.
It seems hyaluronic acid has fallen out of favour for a while now in the beauty community on YouTube. I believe James Welsh said he's not using it anymore because his skin got irritated from it, after previous praising it. Confused

botemp · 02/05/2021 19:40

Yeah, James Welsh isn't really that reliable. I've been a touch skeptical about HA for a while and especially about the low molecular weight stuff as people on here get irritation from it fairly often but I hate how it is in absolutely everything.

In the past Dr Shereen Idris has been a bit do as you like about skincare, particularly when it comes to fragrance because she gets the sensorial enjoyment aspect of it but since she's gotten more serious about the YouTube videos she seems to tout the more standard sensible advice with good in depth info. Until I see otherwise I'm assuming someone had a word about communicating effectively from a professional viewpoint.

Just got this email from Timeless - translation?

Thank you for reaching out to us! We apologize for suspending shipment of our Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum to the EU & UK.

One of the ingredients in our Serum is called Ethoxydiglycol, an industry approved humectant, and member of the Glycol family. This ingredient is widely used in skin care products for its ability to retain moisture and enhance absorption of ingredients, such as Vitamin C.

In light of the regulatory guidelines of the EU, we are now reviewing the EU’s level of requirement for Ethoxydiglycol in our Serum.

As part of our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and performance, all of our ingredients are carefully chosen in accordance with peer reviewed data and guidelines including; CIF (Cosmetic Ingredient Review), The PCPC (Personal Care Products Council) and the EWG (Environmental Working Group).

The remaining of our products are available for purchase and shipment to the UK, and we are working hard on making this serum available in the near future.

We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to continuing to serve you!

Jedstre · 02/05/2021 20:04

I’m just working my way through reading the recent beauty bible awards. Good reading in the bath! www.beautybible.com/beauty-bible-awards-2021

Purpleblondelady · 02/05/2021 21:18

The cleansing brush that's coming with my Bear is the Luna Play (definitely sounds like a sex toy) so is this ok to use? I'm glad I asked, I was planning to just dismiss it. What kind of cleanser do I use with it- a foaming cleanser? I don't tend to use those but I think I've got a couple coming with my GWP. I think it's all due to arrive tomorrow but I might wait til Tuesday when everyone is out at school and work to investigate it all.

Purpleblondelady · 02/05/2021 21:22

@Jedstre I've been reading the Beauty Bible awards too. I've taken part before and loved it, I was really excited to see which products I would receive and tested products that I wouldn't ordinarily have tried.

botemp · 02/05/2021 21:44

Ahem, I'm sure it can double up as one...Yeah that's the one you can't recharge, Purple. I'd use something like Cerave hydrating with it, anything that basically dilutes quickly with water (I'd use it on a damp face).

MrObama sounds like they're working on it and it'll return

Old it's always so much clicking for the Beauty Bible, I'll have to make some time for it to read it all through.

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 03/05/2021 07:29

I might write to Timeless and say now that we’ve Brexited forget the EU guidelines and give us the Vit c back in the U.K. Grin

I did trials for the beauty bible years ago, was never very impressed with anything they sent me including a serum that cost over £200 Shock and they stopped asking me to trial things after a while - likely because I kept giving everything bad scores/reviews.

botemp · 03/05/2021 08:32

I assume, for now, the British guidelines are in line with the EU as I doubt they just abolished all regulations overnight and if British cosmetic companies want to sell into Europe they're not changing either. Even if they have changed/will change most manufacturers treat the UK as part of the EU region as it just doesn't make sense to ship/manufacture different formulas to/in one region.

I've had a look at the hair things from the beauty bible, the Innersense leave in conditioner ranks high on there, I like some other products from the brand but my hair hated the leave in conditioner and I wasn't the only one having issues with it (flash drying).

Do you know what you're testing or do you find out afterwards it's £££ as I think knowing ahead and seeing the packaging could influence perception a lot (in both directions).

OP posts:
Jedstre · 03/05/2021 09:41

@Purpleblondelady@botemp@SallieSallow I was also a beauty bible tester many years ago. The items came in their normal packaging so you knew exactly what you were getting. The things I remember receiving were a Chanel facial spf some ‘beauty’ vitamin supplement, that said don’t take while breastfeeding, (which I was at the time) and I also got boots aftersun Hmm so overall I was fairly unimpressed with what I was sent.

I still like enjoy reading the results. I’m inclined to try maybe a few hair or body products that I wouldn’t buy normally.

Jedstre · 03/05/2021 09:46

Sorry @fail in that last post @botemp @SallieSallow.

How are people getting on with tret from skin and me? I’m nearly finished dermatica tret and niacinamide and considering trying skin&me instead

Sorry *@fail in that last post @botemp* *@SallieSallow*.

quite like Skin + Me - am now on 0.04% Tret. Dermatica do hydroquinone so was thinking of moving for that, but Skin + Me report they may do in the not too distant future. Besides think the combination of 20% AA and increasing Tret is making a difference.

There are so many discount codes for Skin + Me - go onto their Instagram and grab a code - if that's what you wanted.

SallieSallow · 03/05/2021 20:39

Jedstre I got some Chanel stuff too (gave me spots) a serum from a Russian sounding brand that I thought was well dodgy but when I googled was mega bucks Grin and did nothing at all, also another brand beginning with C I think (not Chanel) that was really pricey and didn’t do anything either. This was back in the days before actives were much of a thing so all the stuff I got seemed to be ‘fluff and puff’ and quite greasy/heavily fragranced.

I’m off tret for now, waiting to see if my supplier can get to Spain to pick up some retirides, if not I’ll likely sign back up to dermatica or Skin+me for autumn/winter. I much prefer the texture of dermatica and never got tret face from it but that did make me wonder if it was actually working Hmm

Jedstre · 03/05/2021 21:37

That’s why I want to try skin and me sallie. Never had any dryness from dermatica so also wondering how effective it is Hmm

QueenPaw · 05/05/2021 10:10

Up to date skin. Very happy with my routine TBH! Still using skin and me

Jedstre · 05/05/2021 20:18

@QueenPaw if you have a referral code for skin and me I’ll use yours?

Purpleblondelady · 05/05/2021 20:27

I know I've said it before, but your results have been amazing. I've got both Indeed Labs retinol and Boots Bakuchiol serum on the go at the moment, when I've finished either of those I think I'll sign up for Skin&me too. I was a bit surprised to that Boots Bakuchiol came in Bronze place in the Beauty Bible serum category.

I used my Bear for the first time last night, I was really nervous for some reason Blush I don't know if it was just all the hyaluronic acid serum serum I had on but I felt like I could see some difference. I feel like one of my eyebrows is higher than the other so I need to focus more on the lower side in an attempt to even things up a bit. I did once see a quote saying that everyone has a favourite eyebrow Grin and it's true for me.

QueenPaw · 05/05/2021 20:33

@Jedstre I do, gives you 2 months free I think!
Code is DANIELLF5XCU

Jedstre · 05/05/2021 21:13

@QueenPaw. Done. I get my first and fifth months free. You should get £5 off your next month.

QueenPaw · 07/05/2021 12:13

Thank you!
Minor no buy slip up, I've wanted the spf and body spray for a while Blush
Samples didn't have much choice!

Hope everyone is well. And congratulations to @DrTsmummy:-) tremendous achievement.
Congrats as well to @QueenPaw for beautiful skin! I'm with Dermatica but thinking of swapping to Skin & Me as I feel D aren't very responsive with questions, I don't feel very 'looked after' (very much not their fault, they must be swamped, but I've had an increase in pigmentation since I've started and they misread emails & provide answers that don't relate to what I've asked)
Another thread, another search for the ideal mineral spf. Neostrata makes me look, in my partner's direct turn of phrase, 'Like you're really sick.'
@botemp or anyone, have we heard of either of these and what do we think?
www.nvspharmacy.co.uk/bioderma-cicabio-spf50-30ml.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwhYOFBhBkEiwASF3KGRpjmvZsQ6DmCByZAt5hO3R1A198DBU5-Dq1RZu1z1ZPwasj1f2thRoCUIwQAvD_BwE

Or - I've seen this mentioned by others but can't discern if it's a mineral one:
www.frezyderm.co.uk/sun-care/face-sunscreens/sun-screen-velvet-face-spf-50/

botemp · 16/05/2021 09:04

I like both, the cicabio is green so colour corrects redness a touch. Neither are mineral though. Do you shake the Neostrata well before application especially before the first time using it?

popularinthe80s · 16/05/2021 09:06

Ps sorry for the double-posting, another contender: www.eucerin.co.uk/products/sun-protection/sun-fluid-pigment-control-spf-50?gclid=CjwKCAjwhYOFBhBkEiwASF3KGVgaBAd3dMaDQ0gsrDjw4rYizVoOawjCDhChDPuy6DV8pHpAc8novRoC2y8QAvD_BwE

I don't think it's mineral but it specifies pigmentation, what do you think?
