For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Sallie I use my bear in the morning after applying vit c. Currently I'm using Medik8 CE pure which does have some oils in it, low down the inci but still. I know I know, but I leave it for about 30 mins while sorting out breakfasts and getting DS dressed and the bear still works with no zaps. I used to do it before but I was washing my face too much so I tried it and saw no difference in performance.

I'm also here to possibly ask for the moon on a stick.
DH has been prescribed epiduo, well he was about a month ago, but I won't/can't let him start it until he uses SPF, this has been an ongoing battle for years
He has seborrhoeic acne which he finally went to a derm to get sorted out. He then didn't listen to what she said. I believe this needs to be washed off in the morning with a cleanser? Something like LRP tolerance?
All cream is "too cold" "too slimy" "smells funny" "itches my eyes" "I forgot"
I've left it in the bathroom, on his night stand. In the hall.
I am not his mother, but at the same time I can't in good conscience let him burn his face off.
So what is the most bland sunscreen that needs the least reapplication. He has an office job but does a lot of walking in the mornings and evenings, I could probably force him to reapply in the evening. He won't at work. I'm hoping once he sees an improvement in his skin he may take more care.
This is the type of post most people write about their teen sons not their 40 year old husbands HmmBlushSmile

Would he be up for a mousse? They're not cheap but Evy Technology foam sunscreens from Sweden look really good as they're designed for sensitive skin and have provided third party testing that was a bit extreme for sunscreen and people still had good protection after spending a ridiculous number of hours in a hottub in the sun, so even though they shouldn't really be a thing, this is the closest to a once a day sunscreen I think there is out there. I believe SpaceNK carries them.

My other suggestion would be this not the same one OH uses (Nivea one I order from Japan, it's this one but UVA protection isn't as good on that one) but similar enough, but basically it's a pump so no guessing how much to use, large bottle so it's not running out every month (but have a backup, because, I don't really need to explain do I?) Anyhow, magic seems to be in the pumping action, that gets used but tubes, jars, fancy pump bottles, all get ignored but this for whatever reason gets used.

@botemp - Totally agree about the pump being the key! Grin

70sduvet · 29/04/2021 10:31

Mousse sounds good in theory and hits all the right targets. But omg it is an odd texture and might set him off HmmHmmAngry
I will order the pump and if he hates it I will show him pictures of the truck driver and maybe worse until he gets itAngry
Thank you Flowers

Is timeless vit c back in stock then??? This is exciting news! Skinceuticals I have to smuggle the credit card statement past my husband...

On the mineral spf front- I am trying Dr Sam Buntings flawless one- I haven’t looked into the details as I (naively) am hoping as it’s a derms own line it’s got those bases covered- formulation wise though I love it- I rate it higher than neostrata, heliocare, DE etc. I am Celtic pale though. Might be worth a go?

Mummyingetc · 29/04/2021 12:04

Edit- sorry that was to @SallieSallow and @BabyPigeon!

Also- just remembered the Dr Sam’s spf does two tints so if you’re not see through like me you could always get the darker one?

SallieSallow · 29/04/2021 13:06

Sorry Mummy a friend in the US is my Timeless Vit c supplier, it’s still not available here Sad

I’m struggling a bit with SPFs at the moment, I’m really missing Purito as it doubled as an SPF and moisturiser for me and didn’t leave any white cast. I’m very unimpressed with the tinted heliocare and the Garnier one makes me look a bit ashy. I’ll have a look at the Dr Sam tinted and also the two you’ve mentioned Bo.

Good luck with your DH 70s!

BabyPigeon · 29/04/2021 13:57

@Mummyingetc Thank you, I will have a look. I only tried the first suncreen she released and unfortunately it was way to greasy/shiny for me, I ended up passing it on (I stupidly ordered 2 convinced it will be nice) . I assume the tinted one is new ?

QueenPaw · 29/04/2021 14:08

Botemp that's so weird, I was looking up that mousse after I saw it on Instagram!

No one paid me, I swear, but whoever did pay him should get their money back Confused

@BabyPigeon - am wondering if Dr Sam will buy back or just refund?

BabyPigeon · 29/04/2021 18:07

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 I never thought I could ever return skincare. This happened long ago when she first launched it. I managed to pas it on so it was used in the end. The trial and error with sunscreen can be annoying.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 30/04/2021 08:35

Oh fair enough - thought it was recently purchased. I've returned stuff to Clinique in the past and they didn't bat an eye lid.

Am really loving the Dermatica AA 20%, although Tret has been increased also, but making a definite impact on pigmentation.

Tsmummy08 · 30/04/2021 15:47

@BabyPigeon Re. mineral sunscreens, I use Neostrata and Darphin Intral - have you tried either of those?

Bo Sorry for the late response, I think some of what I thought was sun damage was due to the wind (if that's a thing). I've always had pretty sensitive facial skin (sun and products), possibly a bit rosacea-y with rosy cheeks. My skin seemed to recover with a couple of days TLC but I've realised that one whiff of sunshine and pigmentation is quite visible again. It doesn't seem to have disappeared, in spite of all the actives I've used.... Confused Is it just suppressed?

In other news, I passed my PhD viva this week, which was a huuuge relief!

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 30/04/2021 20:25

@Tsmummy08 - Wow, that's such a huge accomplishment and you really need to change your name to. DrTs... Grin. How are you celebrating??

NinnyNewName · 30/04/2021 22:48

Wow. Amazing TS. Huge congrats.

SophieLion · 01/05/2021 07:09

Many congratulations Dr TSmummy!!! 🎉🎉🥳🥳

SophieLion · 01/05/2021 07:11

(Sorry if I'm premature with the Dr...)

BabyPigeon · 01/05/2021 14:57

@Tsmummy08 Thank you, I have not tried them yet, but I will look into them now. Congratulations from me as well! Smile

Tsmummy08 · 01/05/2021 15:19

Thanks all! It was a long and tortuous road to becoming Dr Tsmummy! Grin

In normal times I'd have had a massive party to celebrate but due to the circumstances I've had to make do with copious wine and a takeout with DH after the event (followed by a thumping hangover), plus a garden gathering with friends tonight WineCake

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 01/05/2021 17:54

@Tsmummy08 - a friend of mine's name is Emma Pepper (not her real first name but the last name IS Pepper) so was hilarious when she became, 'Dr Pepper..' Grin

Well done @Tsmummy08

Purpleblondelady · 01/05/2021 23:18

Well done Tsmummy08! It must be an amazing feeling.

There's a Dr Pepper at our nearest hospital too Grin

I bought a Bear today. Feel Unique were offering a free beauty bag so I went for it (I'll no doubt have lots of questions about it Blush)

SallieSallow · 02/05/2021 10:01

Congratulations TsMummy!

I know someone who became Doc(tor) Martin after getting his PhD, he doesn’t use his Dr title due to comments about either footwear or the TV show or both...

Good luck with the Bear Purple I’m enjoying using mine mainly because it’s so quick compared to the nuface and it makes me look more awake/alive in the morning. I’ve been using the routine in one of the videos Bo linked on the previous page, if you look at her posts only she’s also given good advice about what serums to use etc.

botemp · 02/05/2021 10:02

Congratulations Dr Tsmummy 🎉 don't pull a Dr. Barbara Sturm on us now that you've got the title, please Wink

I'm still on the fence with Dr Shereen Idris but she put up an interesting about hyaluronic acid.
