For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@botemps - Totally agree with Dermatologists who have a, 'brand,' such as Sam Bunting whose panacea for anything usually starts with her overpriced products. What I like about Dr Natalia other than her being American is that she is an author of academic articles. Her, 'angle,' is to get private clients, I guess because I can't see that she is endorsing any products or has a product line.

botemp · 08/10/2021 07:34

True, but long before Dr Sam had a brand she was 'just' a derm on YouTube who would recommend fairly simple and cheap products. I always feel like they're building to something. For a time YouTube kept recommending these two male dermatologists (Doctorly, I think?, I didn't last long, found them very annoying). It was all really slick and very much felt like they were auditioning to get a reality TV show about their practice or similar. It's too much effort just to get a few clients, the reach is too wide to really target your local area. I dunno, maybe they just want free stuff 🤷

I'm Shock you're annoyed she's American, aren't you American? I thought only us Eurotrash were allowed to be make dreadful suffering noises about Americans and their vocal fry.

I'm eyeing up the stylevana advent calendar this year! They don't seem to have released a price yet so I'm stalking the website in hope
I like new stuff to try and it's a mix of skin and makeup

botemp · 08/10/2021 19:43

It's €316 on the EU site Shock what is in that?! Would it even get here in time for the Advent, their shipping is super slow. Are you done with the no buy period, then? (Not meant passive aggressively, honest)

I am about to be totally debt free Grin so I have put aside a bit to celebrate as such as my mortgage is completing on Wednesday I'm torn between the katie Jane hughes spectrum brushes or the advent. Must admit I'm not really spending on makeup, but more skin/body recently

BabyPigeon · 08/10/2021 21:47

I pondered over some advent calendars this year, the ones under £100, like lookfantastic or latest in beauty or l'occitane even. But when I look at the products it never seems to be worth it. It would be better to just get the products I really want to try. They also have random fillers, like an eyebrow pencil in a shade you can't choose, which is ridiculous. Or a very low quality brush.
As for brushes I have Wayne Goss brushes, the first set he put out many years ago and they look exactly the same, no shedding. The only thing that is fading is the engraving on the handles, they are the softest brushes, made of natural hairs (squirrel) so not vegan.
I would love a perfume advent calendar (not from one brand, from a mix of brands would be great).

botemp · 10/10/2021 09:39

I've never really been tempted by the advent calendars (unless you count the packaging some of the luxury ones come in, if they sold those separately I'd be a goner Blush) but that's mostly down to most of it being unsuitable for my skin and I'm just not into makeup enough to justify one of those, I do love a quality makeup brush though, Chikuhodo making my favourites, I think they also make Wayne Goss' brushes although it could have been Hakuhodo but Chikuhodo they also make the Suqqu and Surratt brushes. Part of me thinks it's a bit silly to spend that much on brushes but my sensitive skin is really appreciative and I don't have loads as I don't really need that many and they should theoretically last me for life with proper care.

The economy of AC never make sense to me either, the one or two items I'd be interested in are cheaper bought in a full size separately. Not so much these days due to Brexit but I could usually get the travel size things for cheap from eBay or depop.

NotMyCat · 10/10/2021 20:40

I am leaning towards the makeup brushes! Which is ridiculous as I am still WFH and don't wear makeup Grin but I will use them daily when I eventually go back to the office

BabyPigeon · 11/10/2021 07:46

Lisa Eldridge is restocking all shades of the velvet lipsticks this Friday. Apparently there will be new shades added as well for the lipstick and the glosd, no idea how many. And she will release lip liners to go with each lipstick shade.
Also she is teasing a new face product called seamless skin, it looks like a foundation and there will be sample cards available to add to the order as well. How very exciting. Grin

botemp · 11/10/2021 08:11

I'm now fretfully trying to think if I need anything. I have one of her lip liners, I really like it, wears well stays put, easy to apply, etc. The only thing I don't like is how it matches the lipstick colour 🤷

Is she not doing the blushes again? With winter almost here I'm actually interested in those now. Seamless skin sounds interesting as I'd expect it to be very low coverage going by the name. But knowing myself, I'd just order the sample out of curiousity but never the actual product, I'm just not a foundation, or any sort of face base really, type of person.

OP posts:
NotMyCat · 11/10/2021 11:25

I'm interested to see the seamless skin, will definitely be watching for reviews of that

BabyPigeon · 11/10/2021 13:24

No mention of the blushes I'm afraid. I was hoping for a return of the other lipstick formula, the insanely saturated one, but no joy.
I don't wear foundation anymore but I am interested in a low coverage one if it's from her.
I'm waiting to see the new lipstick shades and maybe pick up a more nude lip liner, I only have one from a set but it's a bolder colour that I don't wear everyday.

Tsmummy08 · 12/10/2021 13:07

Hello all! I've been lurking but following for a while, not doing anything particularly exciting skincare-wise....

Duvet thanks for sharing your thoughts, I don't think you're alone at all... I'm guilty of having been "influenced' into buying all sorts of shit over the years and still give too much headspace to the way I look but it's hard not to when each foray onto a social media platform seems to reinforce the view that looks = value (obvs not true of course)... I seem to be slightly more discerning these days but have still bought a couple of things recently that were suggested by various influencers when I really shouldn't have! Blush. It's also hard when your face changes suddenly... I took some pictures last night to send to a microblader and was horrified! It was like my skin was hanging off my face. Not sure whether it's because I haven't been using the Bear as much or losing a few lbs... ah well!

That being said Grin I did start to use Melano CC essence a month or so ago as I've not been able to use much else with vitamin C alongside tret. Has anyone else used it? It's oily and not irritating, feels nice but not sure it's doing much. I'm using the Hada Labo whitening lotion then the Melano, then basic moisturiser and SPF.

That LE foundation looks interesting too but again, I rarely wear a base these days... it's concealer, brows, mascara, a balmy lip and Hourglass powder. It feels like foundation and heels belong to another life!

Tsmummy08 · 12/10/2021 16:32

Oh yes, the other thing I meant to ask about was that my skin is still annoyingly pink - out with some friends a few weeks ago for the first time in ages, someone took a picture and I looked like a bloody tomato! Why?! What the hell is going on?

I'm going to have to stop tret before and after I get my brows done so I'll see if that helps but really, am I just perma-pink now?! Is this my fate?

Rant over! Grin

botemp · 12/10/2021 17:17

Hmm, I'm not sure what is causing perma-pink, you haven't had your colours done, have you? That often tends to turn cool toned people weirdly perma-pink. It could mean easing up on tretinoin, is it also quicker to burn, or otherwise more sensitive? I do find that the Asian phones (basically most of them that are not Apple or Nokia) tend to make cool toned people look pink, yellow/neutral tones become ghostly, it has to do with their beauty ideals.

I've used melano cc in the past, always worked a treat for PIE but I don't find it particularly nice to use. I'm still enjoying the Geek and Gorgeous C Glow.

Tsmummy08 · 13/10/2021 07:40

Hi Bo, no I haven't had my colours done - I've got naturally pink cheeks (as did my mum) but the rest of my skin leans yellow. Maybe using a vit C, however mild, has upset my skin again. I'm at the point where a derm appointment is looking like a decent investment so will do that in the next couple of months.

I've also been using Biossance Lactic acid with squalane (pretty mild) a couple of times a week on non-tret nights but will stop using that too for a while. Sigh.

botemp · 13/10/2021 09:10

Completely anecdotal but lactic acid does make me go a bit pink. I don't think it's an acknowledged side effect though. A derm will know better than me, anyhow.

botemp · 13/10/2021 19:16

Well I've seen the Lisa Eldridge video with new products, no mention of the second skin base type product. I'm somewhat tempted by Petal and Beauty light (I remember going back and forth over the original beauty but deciding against in the end as it felt too dark so light should be my thing in theory). But do I really need it, probably not. I'd like some more soft pinks as my usual colours of reds and strong pinks have been feeling a bit much since the pandemic but I can't imagine I'm going to feel like that forever and I'm not sure I like a soft pink if it's matte. The gloss embrace version would be a happy medium but Petal as a gloss feels a bit meh.

Cinnabar looks fantastic, I'd imagine it would work especially well on a deep olive skin tone but it's feeling too bold for me atm.

Having a back acne breakout - I've never had back acne in my life ConfusedHmm
Bought a body brush, using murad BHA/AHA cleanser on it and clinisoothe but it's taking ages to shift

NotMyCat · 13/10/2021 23:07

Velvet petal does look lovely. The video is exceptional - I love it shows the colours properly and on different skin tones
I've found my perfect nude lipstick so no purchases for me!

Not sure if I mentioned this company before but I love their lipsticks. They do a matching lip liner and nail Polish for each plus the packaging is lush

BabyPigeon · 13/10/2021 23:13

I saw the new lipstick shades and I'm a bit disappointed, they are all leaning warm. This means they will make teeth look more yellow than they are. Confused I do like blush lightly, I have the original and yes it's a bit too dark. My favourite from the lines are velvet morning and beauty which leans blue. Muse is also nice. I'm overwhelmed about the pencils, I have a feeling I will not use them, the lipsticks are lasting enough for me so no idea what to choose.
I wish she wouldl release a clear gloss in so I can wear it at night but I ordered the new lip care product from Paula's chtoice abts I hope it's good.

cad186 · 14/10/2021 09:23

Has anyone had issues with their Foreo Bear? My last one went a bit temperamental, it would work for a bit then would stop so I would usually end up doing half my face. I emailed Look Fantastic and they replaced it straight away in fairness, but the new one I've got seems to have started doing the same thing and I've only had it a few months. I charged it yesterday so that shouldn't be the problem. Has anyone else had anything similar? Thanks!

SophieLion · 14/10/2021 16:47

Hi cad, I contacted foreo because my one was playing up. It would stay on all the time (even when not in contact with my skin). They suggested I send it back to them (I hadn't bought it direct from foreo) and then ended up replacing it. That was back in March/April. My new one has been fine - hope I haven't jinxed it now....!

Tsmummy08 · 27/10/2021 16:40

Did anyone get anything in the latest LE release? I got the Intrigue pencil and Dragon gloss (both lovely), plus a foundation sample which was too light for me, not realising I could've added another one at checkout, doh!

The foundation is REALLY nice - light-medium coverage, not dewy but not matte, it sets to a soft almost powdery finish without looking powdery. Hard to describe!

I've ditched the tree for the next couple of months as I'm having my brows bladed in a few weeks - we'll see if my pinkness diet down!

Tsmummy08 · 27/10/2021 19:04

OMG proof-read woman! Clearly, that was supposed to be tret not tree and dies not diet!
