Why would you even WANT to copy the Parisienne look?

Just think it's interesting when you see threads but also newspaper articles etc about the "French" look and specifically the Parisian look - a kind of understated elegant style, I get it.

But honestly, having lived in France for a decade now (in six cities in different regions) I really think this is a bit of a misplaced myth, in the same way that in France in some crowds there can be a bit of glamourising around "le gentleman so British". Sure, when you're in london you may very occasionally see some really dapper looking men wearing those big beige overcoats (what are they called by the way? The big flappy things they wear over suits? Like a kind of trench coat?).

But by and large whenever I go back to the UK I genuinely find British women dress better, with more snap, in outfits that have more interest. What I've learnt from my time here is that the whole understated elegance thing doesnt necessarily stem from wanting to look effortless, it's actually about not wanting to stand out from the crowd. I remember a friend asking me if I thought her shoes were too "m'as tu vu" (flashy). They just weren't black. In fact you barely ever see coats here that arent black, grey, or beige. Teenagers basically look no different from their parents. Fashion doesnt really happen at all. I think in the 10 years I've been here nothing has really changed, its still jeans, delicate trainers, a Longchamp handbag and a trench, just like Mum. Maybe the jeans got slightly wider lately; that's all.

It always seems to me theres some fabulous styled women in the UK, "even" outside London. I see "even" because outside of Paris, in the French "provinces" thing start to go downhill quite rapidly IMO.

So why does the French thing continue to inspire? I honestly think in the UK you are freer to experiment, you have more choice, and people by and large look pretty rocking. Maybe the trend for heavy makeup could be toned down a bit, also the fillers trend (from what I'm reading) in the UK is a bit shocking.

I have to agree about Swedish buns. There are these and these which are heavenly. Beats chelsea buns and hot cross buns hands down.

I wish I could master doing my own hair... I’ve never managed to tie it up without looking like a prison officer.

So I went into Central London on Thursday for work . Got off the train at Waterloo and the heel of my new Cos boot came off - it’s so unusual for me to wear heels nowadays but I thought I’d make the effort. So what do you do? London is Tier 3..... do you hobble along time try and find a cobbler ( are they open??) I’m so bloody annoyed. Husband says send them back but I actually want them I don’t want a refund. ( plus I bought them in store ). They were in the sale but I would have been even more irritated if I’d paid £175.

Ive been making the Cardomom buns for years. They are very similar to a Devonshire split. That what I was looking for and used the recipe for those instead. Absolutely lovely. My favorite has to be the Austrian Buchteln. Warm from the oven with ice cold white butter .

Flo, they do have a pale imitation of cinnamon buns in IKEA. Nothing like what a good bakery provides here. Cardamom, saffron, cinnamon, rimbobullar, semlas in all their variations ...

Don’t get the love for the French style too much. That thread is a little over the top in its adulation. Personally, I don’t think you can top Italian women - Milanese specially - or Manhattan women. The impeccable grooming has the edge.

I find the French overly conventional, lacking in originality and imagination.

Vive les Brits!

I love French chic. It makes dressing so easy and is more environmentaly friendly as it is not about disposable fast fashion, but good quality basics. It is not for everyone but for those who favour a minimalistic vibe - it can be a great start in putting a capsule together.

I also appreciate the masculine/feminine mix in the style as I don't like anything too frou-frou.

Divebar · 25/12/2020 13:10

You can be minimalist & sustainable without it being French though. A lot of Scandinavian and Japanese styles also have that androgynous look... in fact Studio Nicholson who are British I think are minimalist, androgynous and have nothing to do with French style.

Enjoying this thread, thanks all.

And @BringMeTea thanks for the reference to Debora Carminati- I had a google, and that is how I want to dress (the fact that I am brunette, and am, at minimum, twice her weight, makes it a bit tricky Grin).
