Why would you even WANT to copy the Parisienne look?

Just think it's interesting when you see threads but also newspaper articles etc about the "French" look and specifically the Parisian look - a kind of understated elegant style, I get it.

But honestly, having lived in France for a decade now (in six cities in different regions) I really think this is a bit of a misplaced myth, in the same way that in France in some crowds there can be a bit of glamourising around "le gentleman so British". Sure, when you're in london you may very occasionally see some really dapper looking men wearing those big beige overcoats (what are they called by the way? The big flappy things they wear over suits? Like a kind of trench coat?).

But by and large whenever I go back to the UK I genuinely find British women dress better, with more snap, in outfits that have more interest. What I've learnt from my time here is that the whole understated elegance thing doesnt necessarily stem from wanting to look effortless, it's actually about not wanting to stand out from the crowd. I remember a friend asking me if I thought her shoes were too "m'as tu vu" (flashy). They just weren't black. In fact you barely ever see coats here that arent black, grey, or beige. Teenagers basically look no different from their parents. Fashion doesnt really happen at all. I think in the 10 years I've been here nothing has really changed, its still jeans, delicate trainers, a Longchamp handbag and a trench, just like Mum. Maybe the jeans got slightly wider lately; that's all.

It always seems to me theres some fabulous styled women in the UK, "even" outside London. I see "even" because outside of Paris, in the French "provinces" thing start to go downhill quite rapidly IMO.

So why does the French thing continue to inspire? I honestly think in the UK you are freer to experiment, you have more choice, and people by and large look pretty rocking. Maybe the trend for heavy makeup could be toned down a bit, also the fillers trend (from what I'm reading) in the UK is a bit shocking.

It's the principle and some of the attitude, I think, not slavish copying of an impossible and mythical ideal. But as Flo said, come and join the threads, we're not actually sitting there pressuring each other to drink black coffee all day and be as thin as we can get. :)

Personally I like a streamlined, (hopefully) severely elegant look for myself - husband says I look like Rosa Klebb about to get down to business, which is exactly perfect. Probably not remotely Parisienne in actuality. But wild, bright, wacky, and obviously experimental isn't me at all and my personal fun is to be had in winkling out nice things that will last and work as a whole. That doesn't mean there can never be an experiment or a surprise. And the Parisienne threads here are the closest S&B threads I can get to that.

I think there's as many uniforms in the UK; and most people are very likely to follow the fashion of the moment rather than be experimental in any way.

I prefer Clemence

Alexa isn’t my style

Splodgetastic · 15/12/2020 08:27

@GoldfishParade I believe the coat in your OP is a Crombie.

HeadNorth · 15/12/2020 08:28

Clemence and Alexa both look stunning and stylish. Why does it have to be a competition? Can we not appreciate women looking great, in their different ways?

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2020 08:29

I don’t get how you look at Clemence and not see she looks good

Alexa is wearing what she suits - which I wouldn’t but it’s good for her

Havenly · 15/12/2020 08:29

I think the French women who dress in the uniform, conservative style are afraid to stand out, or take any risk, or to dress for fun. They dress to look 'right' to other people and to appeal to men.

Floisme · 15/12/2020 08:35

Actually I do drink black coffee all day Catherine Grin It's about as French looking as I ever get.

Divebar · 15/12/2020 08:36

If you put “British style” into Pinterest you get a very varied result - street styles versus classic tweeds and Hunters. When you think of all those classic British brands available plus designers like Margaret Howell you can definitely see style beyond mini skirts and fake tan. There is something liberating about not worrying too much about it though. There’s a reason French fashion houses seek out British fashion designers.

Floisme · 15/12/2020 08:37

I think Alexa and Clemence both look good. Not sure why it has to be a competition - it's good to get inspiration from lots of sources I think.

StCharlotte · 15/12/2020 08:37

If the OP is correct, this might explain why I always used to get mistaken for a "local" whenever I was in Paris. I was forever in black or navy.

Until I hit my mid 30s and rediscovered the joy of colour!

CatherineMaitland · 15/12/2020 08:39

I also think there are differences in French style, eg Caroline de Maigret isn't Ines de la Fressange, etc.

StCharlotte · 15/12/2020 08:39

As an aside I used to drink in the same pub as Alexa when she was home with the family. She is extraordinarily pretty in the flesh.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 15/12/2020 08:40

I lurk on the Parisienne threads, and it’s not about a French look, it’s about learning how to recognise what suits you and how a minor change in the drape of fabric can completely alter a look. What I’ve taken from them is it’s about you looking fabulous and people not immediately noticing your clothes because you stand out. I also find that the Brits who are lauded for original style find a uniform that works for them with just tweaks - I certainly don’t find Alexa wears anything particularly different from what she’s always worn, which is exactly what is being criticised in the French. Not to say she doesn’t look great, she does, but it’s immediately recognisable as her style.

TheySeeHerRowling · 15/12/2020 08:47

Agree with the posters saying that the Milanese have got it going on

Best people watching of my life when I was there

Parisiennes are great accessorisers - especially the scarves and bags - but clothing is too samey for my taste

You'll see wonderfully stylish, handsome and well-groomed men who will ruin it all by being on those scooter things Grin Italian Vespas def have the style edge on that!

dreamingbohemian · 15/12/2020 08:48

British style is more interesting, but the trendiness can be conforming its own way -- you see a lot of people running around in clothes or makeup that doesn't suit them at all, people are just wearing because it's the latest thing. For a lot of French women, they find what suits them and then stick with that.

I think Berlin has the best balance between fun and classic style.

Melange99 · 15/12/2020 08:48

I was in Palma in Majorca a few years ago, somewhere I would like to go back to when I was less sweaty tourist (I was on a day trip from a resort). I did not expect it to be a chic little capital, worth a weekend trip. What struck me was how stylish the locals were, men and women. (The tourists stuck out!) I would raise my game if I went back.

Echobelly · 15/12/2020 08:52

I think the 'chic' look works amazingly on some people, but I could never be bothered and I prefer more colour and expressivity for what I wear. You have to be perfectly manicured and every aspect has to be right or else it can just look boring or like you can't don't want to be noticed rather than chic.

Also, having discussed it with some friends, one pointed out that you have to be slim and probably not have big boobs to pull off the 'chic' look.

Bigoldmachine · 15/12/2020 08:52

I would call that big tan flappy coat an overcoat I think?

Or even a dress coat?

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 15/12/2020 08:54

I agree op. I wear the 'Parisian Chic' look for job interviews and funerals. It has its place but I like to experiment.

GoldfishParade · 15/12/2020 08:55

@Bigoldmachine yes exactly the long flappy ones! @Splodgetastic it's not a crombie coat I'm thinking of, the one in my head is like a trench coat almost but more voluminous and without all the belt details

IrenetheQuaint · 15/12/2020 08:59

As someone who is not particularly interested in clothes but wants to look OK for work, I am a great fan of slightly dull yet stylish dressing. So I find the French threads quite useful (am not suggesting the other posters on them are boring dresses! But I certainly am, and happy to own it).

Melange99 · 15/12/2020 09:00

Like this?

Why would you even WANT to copy the Parisienne look?
Requinblanc · 15/12/2020 09:10

I used to always be able to spot the Brits when waiting at airports: tattoos, fake tan, clothes that are too tight and show too much flesh, overweight, fake nails/eyelashes...

Of course many British women also manage to dress well and with a unique style but frankly the French and the Italian do tend to dress better in general and are more understated...

Divebar · 15/12/2020 09:10

Oh I was thinking of this

Why would you even WANT to copy the Parisienne look?
Melange99 · 15/12/2020 09:17

Is it a man's coat or women's one?
