For a laptop I definitely think that a backpack is a better option, or at least a tote keeps the weight in a better position under the arm.

I'm struggling with the brief.

If you have anyone in the US Cuyana have some good options:

This is close to your original brief
www.cuyana.com/bags/totes/medium-carryall-tote/10010045.html?dwvar_10010045_color=black

I prefer this one, which is more expensive, but nicely laid out inside www.cuyana.com/bags/satchels/zippered-satchel/10010539.html?dwvar_10010539_color=caramel

Finally this backpack is nice and simple www.cuyana.com/bags/backpacks/leather-backpack/10010460.html?dwvar_10010460_color=black

What about Polene? eng.polene-paris.com/products/numero-un-trio-bordeaux-graine

This Cos one is certainly versatile, but the styling is not my cup of tea. www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/men/accessories/bags-and-wallets/bags/product.grained-leather-backpack-black.0864137001.html

I really like the Cuyana backpack, thanks so much for linking it!

The one from The Row also looks nice, though still pricey. I can splash out on a good bag but I if I don't have to, great.

I know my examples weren't leather but that's not hugely important to me as long as they last well. And living in London, keeps the stuff inside dry.
I sometimes do get bored of things so was also considering the potential resell value. But I hate visible logos too which the Prada bag has, obviously

Redandblue11 · 03/02/2021 13:28

I really like those Polene bags Elle.
Just saw this one on eBay too

I have to say the Polene bags aren't as nice in RL as they are in the pictures. Comparable to Sezane's leather goods, just missing the mark for the price. The cognacs are more like a mustard colour and the suede is very cheap looking. The oxblood leather did look quite nice but overall I don't think they're worth the asking price.

Thanks for the recs Elle. I had a poke about on Cuyana and rather like this one
www.cuyana.com/bags/satchels/trapeze-satchel/10010535.html?dwvar_10010535_color=burgundy

It’s more than I want to spend but I can afford it if I’m buying exactly the right thing.

Like luggage I want a bag that is good quality, not trendy and will last a good few years’ use. Given how much effort it takes to finally decide on one, it needs to!

BerniceBobsHerHair · 03/02/2021 14:53

ShangPie I am just delurking to say the bag you posted a picture of looks like a Mimi Berry bag

Sorry for hijacking the thread - I could not find your original bag thread.

I was def procrastinating this morning I seem to be spending my life doing that otoh Blush it’s a wonder I get anything done.

Welp, from pretty bags to lumpy women. I present photos of me in the Arket dress, both colours. If I’m keeping one it’s the blue, but atm I’m not feeling that they are the right thing for my physique which is more sturdy farmer’s wife than wafty waif. Also very long arty sleeves. When am I supposed to wear this? And no pockets.

Went to the hairdresser today and popped into the charity shop - saw a Joseph jumper/top for a STEAL (if I’m reading the brand label right) but it was an xs or something.

I like the pleats in the navy dress on you bani, how is the material?
I wear that dress to the office, going for coffee, meeting a friend for a drink... any occasion really. I assume in Sweden you are allowed to sit in a coffee shop (outdoors?) even in the cold with a jumper on top and coat , the pleats peaking out at the bottom of a coat will look nice.
Thanks for the tip on polene bags Bo, yes I remember when I went to the sezane shop I was unimpressed with their leather goods for the price they were asking.

Redandblue11 · 03/02/2021 21:28

You went to a hairdresser and an actual shop Envy
When on earth am I going to be able to sort out my hair??? I was googling ways to thin my hair on my own and looking how to use those scissors that hairdressers use with those dents ... I have a lot of hair and grows out if left to its own devices. I am worried to make a mess out of it ... but needs sorting ...

banivani · 03/02/2021 21:30

Polyester but heavy and substantial, feels “expensive” perhaps a tad stiff but I don’t mind that. There’s a window for wearing it alright, not a summer dress and you’d need your thermals on in this weather. I like the seams sitting on the shoulders though.

banivani · 03/02/2021 21:34

Oh Red (x-post) and I asked for a Fusiodose and my hair is all silky now and non-frizzy! I know, I’m more and more a proponent of “the Swedish model” tbh.

We do whatever we want but there are now rules about how many in each shop etc but I like that they could have sorted that ages ago IMO. My own COVID experience aligns v strongly with the science - the spread happens in homes/similar exposure.

botemp · 03/02/2021 21:39

I like it in navy Bani, but it does scream a bit Christmas dinner to me. Difficult to think when you'd otherwise wear it, even in non pandemic times.

What's with the armpit floss on the Joseph top Confused

I've become quite good at trimming my own hair (so much so that I'll keep up doing trims myself in the future) but I could definitely do with a proper cut. I wouldn't go at your own hair with thinning scissors though, Red, that feels way too risky. I have splicing scissors, so you can sort of move them down vertically if you want a more choppy thinned out finish, I do that to layers at the front.

I think you are right Bo just in a delirium thinking of ways ... I normally do that but don’t act Grin

timeisnotaline · 04/02/2021 01:46

The navy photo looks like step 1 on the 5 step plan of how to pose your own Vermeer. Subtle sheen and pleat texture, plain background, aged wood with marble top prop/texture foil, pose, needs a drape/piano/urn and a bit more mood? Perhaps a wimple.
I like it thoughGrin. I’d wear it to the office or dinner, the pink one prob wouldn’t get to the office.

A wimple! The accessory we never knew we needed Grin

Would certainly fix some bad hair days and save money on serum for forehead wrinkles Hmm

banivani · 04/02/2021 07:15

Yes, bring back wimples! The loss of hat culture has put the white Western woman in a bad position when she's having bad hair days. Wink

Hm, I don't think I love the dress at all as much as I love the Vermeer comparisons Grin It demands a lot from me, including I think weight loss, longer arms and to already own The Boots. Which I don't. It's okay that's all. On me I mean - I still like it in theory and would admire it on others. Could keep it for those Christmas dinners!

Floisme · 04/02/2021 08:06

Hey I've got a Joseph jumper like that but without the funny business on the sleeves. It was from a shop that appeared overnight selling designer seconds and then did a runner a few weeks later.

I like the navy dress and I predict that Christmas dinner 2021 dressing will be Huge, so it would be a very astute buy.

botemp · 04/02/2021 08:11

Yes, I was thinking that photo had some Golden Age portrait aspirations too. Did Mr. Bani take those with his new camera in the end? He'll be preening he's a master painter soon...

There's still women here who wear a wimple as part of -blanking on the right English translation- traditional costume (per Google, but that's not right, it's not a costume, traditional dress maybe? Still doesn't sound right ) that they still wear in certain parts of the country, I saw a lot more of them when I was younger than now but you can still go to Volendam with all the other tourists and dress up, wimple and all.

My Anny Nord boots came in last night and they're gorgeous but sadly I have to send them back as they're huge (no size down) and even with my tallest heel inserts (I think they're 1.5") though they're not bothering my knees the ankle is getting all squished down when they're supposed to be quite smooth. Boo, if only I were taller Sad

ToEllewithIt · 04/02/2021 08:57

Shame about the Polene bags, I haven't seen them in real life, but always liked the style.

Funnily enough wimple was the answer to a question at a "pub quiz" I attended virtually through work. My catholic education finally paid dividends.

Bani I love the casual lean on the plant holder. I think that the navy dress looks great and can definitely imagine it with your dream boots.

botemp I think maybe National Dress if it's kind of symbolic of the country though costume works too, traditional dress if it's not the super-symbolic version.

Shame about the Anny Nord boots, they're really fab.

botemp · 04/02/2021 09:10

It's not national though, not even regional, it's very specific to villages (well I assume to cities at some point) and tied up with protestant religion and codes as opposed to nation. I'm not sure there's an English word for it, but traditional dress probably sums it up best.

OP posts:
Carriemac · 04/02/2021 09:34

Folk costume?

botemp · 04/02/2021 09:37

Yes, that's probably the best fit, congrats on your youthful brains Carrie Envy

The plant holder is a decorating project, I want to paint the plain untreated wood - feel free to suggest a colour to go with the green marble some hobbyist has superglued to the top. Have been thinking of chalk paints to give that a go. No shabby chic finishing though.

The English language lacks a word for "folkdräkt". Wikipedia puts it as "national costume" so covers a multitude of things but I agree, misses the regional aspect. Kimono for example isn't that regionally specific I think, whereas Swedish and Dutch dress is. I've looked this up before out of curiosity since the Nobel Prize dinner has the dress code of formal wear, which includes national costumes, and they sometimes turn up (always fun).

Forgot to say that the thing on the Joseph jumper is a draped chiffon insert down each sleeve. Not at all bad-looking, blame my photo!

Martinisarebetterdirty · 04/02/2021 09:44

Bani - delurking to say that I love the navy dress on you. I think it will be a useful to have dress (I have an ancient silk Whistles dress that rarely makes an appearance apart from for specific restaurants for Sunday lunch, when it is perfect - pre Covid times of course). I think it suits you well.

botemp · 04/02/2021 09:45

Yes, English doesn't seem to use the word dräkt/dracht the way we do, it's not dress. I think it's also a very Calvinist word as it's more instructions of dress (and no, not a dress code, that somewhat suggests you have a choice, no such thing as individuals having choice under Calvin's eye).

I like the untreated wood, maybe some of that Finnish sauna wax would work well too. Is it a light green marble, it looks white on my screen?
