AARRGHH! Discontinued favourites 😡

I’m SO annoyed! Just went to the Lish website to reorder my Queen Bee hair stuff and found it’s gone. Replaced by a cream which just won’t be right for me - it’s the addition of beeswax that stops my hair from fluffing up and releasing all moisture.

So I have two questions. What favourites of yours have been discontinued and what did you replace it with? And can you recommend anything to replace Queen Bee? 😭 I guess technically that’s three questions but still....

I am also annoyed that I bought a lipstick from Mac (it was a limited edition to be fair) which was discontinued with no equivalent replacement. It was perfect.

I struggle with lipstick colours. They either wash me out or are too bold.

I found the perfect one in Sephora. Colour discontinued. I still have a tiny bit left and am hoping to take it somewhere to see if they can recreate the colour!

chillimartini · 15/12/2020 23:34

@bicky yes!!! Corn silk face powder...it was amazing!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 16/12/2020 00:03

I really miss the Grapeseed Dry Body Oil spray from The Body Shop.
The Works used to do a cheaper range called Good Works & they did a lovely dry body oil spray too, it was called Goodbye Dry Skin.
Everytime I find a lipstick I love after a few years it gets discontinued Bourjois, Clinique, Lancôme & Liz Earle I'm looking at you.
I also miss Liz Earle superbalm was brilliant as a lip balm & cuticle balm.
Clinique Uplighter in Natural miss that too.

babyinthacorner · 16/12/2020 08:07

Benefit Lemon Aid

Deathraystare · 16/12/2020 08:15

Too many to mention here but agree re Gucci Envy. Got it once from Half Price Perfumes but never again. Saw it once in Beauty Base but sadly it is full of celeb saccharine scents now :(

LadyEloise · 16/12/2020 09:22

If they ain't broke why do they fix 'em ???
Or get rid altogether.
I'm ekeing out the last of my Model's Own Chubby Matt Lip Stix lip pencil.
There's probably only a week left in it.
Sad

nightswimmer80 · 16/12/2020 12:47

Too many to mention Angry but the most annoying was Boots No 7 cream blusher, they stopped doing all their cream blushers years ago and I struggled to find a suitable replacement. found Max Factor miracle touch but the colour shade is not the same and I have to mix two together and even then the colour is not great Sad.

butterycooler · 16/12/2020 17:07

In the 90s Boots National Collection had a watermelon shower gel, it was dark green and smelt lovely. They also did a spearmint lip balm that my best friend and I loved.

I really miss Revlon skinlights concealer - it really brightened my dark circles.
Urban Decay big fatty mascara - in the swirly patterned tube. It used to be fab and then they "improved the formula" and it was crap.

peoplearepeople · 16/12/2020 17:40

Becca shimmering skin perfector liquid.
Boots natural collection marshmallow bath foam.
Herve Leger Paris perfume. (not the avon one)

Coffeepot72 · 16/12/2020 18:45

Corn Silk loose powder. But I’ve since discovered Laura Mercier loose powder, and that’s just as good.

Clinique Quick Liner Intense in charcoal, although you can still get this on Amazon

AngeloMysterioso · 16/12/2020 19:01

@peoplearepeople Becca shimmering skin perfector liquid.

I’ve got a virtually full bottle of that that I never use, you can have it if you like

AngeloMysterioso · 16/12/2020 19:04

It’s also available on Boots online...

CurlyhairedAssassin · 16/12/2020 19:37

I'm not convinced they discontinue stuff based on regulation changes. I think the main two reasons are to make cost savings, and also because it means they can bring out something new and therefore novel in its place. People are suckers for trying something new and falling for the marketing hype and this is particularly true in the beauty world, I think, with beauty review websites/youtube/bloggers.

I can't help feeling that most of it is a con. I even hate going shopping for products now as there is FAR too much choice. I don't have enough time to waste researching 10 different moisturisers from the same brand. As an example, I'm old enough to remember when Olay had ONE product, and it was called Oil of Ulay. I don't even know what to pick from their range anymore and I'm old enough and wise enough to realise that if I try something new it won't suit my sensitive skin/be good enough to buy again, so I'll try something else in the range instead.

I'm convinced it's mainly to keep us buying stuff. Still, keeps Caroline Hirons in a job I suppose.....

Darklane · 16/12/2020 19:46

Boots No7 seem to have discontinued all their flattering lighter coloured lipsticks in favour of dark or very bright ones. Used to love Petal, Mischief & one that was Beach something in the crayons.

ZootSuit · 16/12/2020 23:21

@AmethystMoonShine sorry if someone has already linked this but I haven’t got to the end of the thread yet! Is it this nail polish? I just typed it in google because the name intrigued me and it popped up in Superdrug! Sorry if it’s the wrong one

1forAll74 · 17/12/2020 03:27

You can sometimes find discontinued make up and perfume on ebay. There are lots of independent sellers who might have what you are looking for. I bought two discontinued Revlon lipsticks recently. They were from someone in Manchester, who had lots of good brands of make up stuff, and good prices too.

Melange99 · 17/12/2020 04:58

Prescriptives foundation - made to your exact requirements. The shades were spot on.

Body Shop Camomile Shampoo - the best ever for blonde hair
Boots Camomile Shampoo - a credible replacement also demised. I still have a few bottles.

Sunsilk Poppy shampoo - it was a brightening shampoo, made my natural blonde hair sparkle.

Boots No 7 Honey blusher - they now have another blusher in that name but completely different shade.

Going way back, a No 7 nail polish in conker brown.

Boots No 7 tinted moisturiser - they have reformulated this several times since my holy grail version and they are nowhere near the same. In the US they were selling the old version for a while after it stopped being sold in the UK. When I went to US we drove to an out of town mall specifically so I could stockpile. All gone now.

Twiggy brought out a range of skincare which was stocked in department stores - there was a lavender moisturiser that gave me the best skin. I used to get so many compliments when I was using this. It was a shortlived range, I managed a small stockpile. Asda then brought it out again, but it was a completely different range, nondescript products, and didn't last long.

Clarins gel cream gradual face tan - they dropped this amazing product to bring out the drops which I don't like.

Superdrug Vitamin E body scrub in a tube. Cheap as chips, the best scrub with some heft behind it. Reformulated and useless afterwards.

L'Oreal Collagen lip thing - a double ended product with two creams - one you used to outline mouth, one all over for lip plumping. It didn't lip plump but what it did do was really define your lip line. Great for an ageing lip. I stockpiled and still have a few tubes. I only put it on a couple of times a week now.

The worse thing is when the product really was unique and there is no replacement- the camomile shampoos were lovely but you can get other ones, albeit not as good. Things like the L'Oreal lip thing are unique. You can get those stingy lip plumper but not the same at all. The L'Oréal one was a cream, non sting and was subtle.

RIP to all the lovely products that made our day.

AmethystMoonShine · 17/12/2020 06:34

@ZootSuit yes that’s the one Smile it’s such a pretty colour and I’ve never found a dupe. So pleased it’s not discontinued after all.

soupmaker · 17/12/2020 07:15

Another one here who raged at Gucci. I wore Envy every day. But the one I still mourn is Alexander McQueen's Kingdom. I bought it when it was launched. Everything about it was gorgeous. The weight of it in your hand, everything. I loved the limited edition with the pink glass too. Sigh.

Melange99 · 17/12/2020 07:32

I am not a Gucci Envy misser. I don't know what is smells like but it seems to be the most missed item on this thread. Curious I looked it up and it was mentioned that Eden Perfumes no 42 is a dupe. The first review says it is too.

Melange99 · 17/12/2020 07:38

A bit more on Eden perfumes. Somebody has compiled a list of their dupes. So if a fave of yours is discontinued or it is no longer affordable might be worth a look.

edenperfumesblog.blogspot.com/p/perfume-index.html

Melange99 · 17/12/2020 07:49

I don't work for Eden perfumes I promise. I find the site a bit infuriating but I like the idea of them, they are vegan and they get good reviews. They are inexpensive too. I might see what Santa brings and maybe treat myself. I was wondering if they had a Fiji dupe but couldn't see one. I also looked up Rive Gauche - they have a dupe called River Gauge 😂 which from the reviews smells like the original version rather than the inferior one that they brought back. I wish their search engine was better. I found the Gucci Envy one via Google rather than on their website.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 17/12/2020 07:59

Bringing the thread downmarket, but it's two Tesco products for me. I do Curly Girl method so am very picky about ingredients in products.
Tesco used to do a Keronics conditioner that my hair loved. It was just the perfect consistency, contained protein, which gave me great curl definition and it was only 80p a bottle. I heard they were discontinuing it so I stashed a load away but I've used all those now.
I also stashed their amazing 45p gel when I heard that was being discontinued. It's the best gel I have ever used on my hair, and I've tried them all! I really wish they'd kept it. Even if they put the price up tenfold, at £4.50 a pot I still would have used it!

Blueberryblueberry · 17/12/2020 08:54

Ah I also loved Gucci Envy - would take me right back to me uni days if I could smell it now. This thread got me thinking about discontinued perfumes and I have happily found that my favourite perfume from years ago which I thought was discontinued (Oscar de la renta - So) is actually available on line! I've treated myself to a bottle - I hope it smells the same!

Blueberryblueberry · 17/12/2020 08:57

I am also now tempted to buy various perfumes that remind me of my youth - v tempted by a bottle of the original Ghost... Not sure if I'm just trying to recreate my youth by smelling youthful, whilst being a knackered and grumpy mother of two Grin
