I am definitely ordering the joggers (even though they're black and not navy like the picture makes them look) and probably going to end up disappointed. I also like the oatmeal jumper, and the white blazer, and that dirty pink really suits me so may try things in that colour. Obviously I'm also a sucker for the all tonal looks too.

Yeah I was hoping they'd turn out navy too. The brown might work with a couple of tweed jackets so may give them a try. They've got dark blue joggers in the main collection at nearly half the price but they're far more fitted and look like they'd be shiny.

I was also hoping for a chunky (cable knit or similar) V neck men's / mannish look women's cardigan but maybe it's too early for that.

Floisme · 21/08/2020 11:36

No I'm wrong, there is a cardigan that might work! In the women's U. Not cable but might do the trick.

Floisme · 21/08/2020 11:37

Would have to be the brown though. No more grey for me this winter.

quirkychick · 21/08/2020 14:37

Ooh, Uniqlo U, those joggers look good, flo. Lovely dress, bo. Speaking of brown, I bought a rich brown, cord skirt from Oliver Bonas for £15, it's an A-line mini skirt. It's lined, so more for autumn than summer unless I remove the lining from this as well Grin.

botemp · 22/08/2020 09:30

Well, I was in &Other Stories yesterday and -spoiler alert-, we're terribly unoriginal with our joggers and blazers talk, Flo. They had a really nice pair lovely soft interior and slightly balloon cut shaped which felt a bit more designed than athleisure (and a price to match). They had a perfectly styled 40+ model with it and interesting blazer. It was too busy at the changing rooms to try on the joggers but I did try on the blazer just for the hell of it as it didn't look that great on a hanger. I actually really like it, I think it's Jacquemus inspired although it also reminds me of the vintage JPG blazer Elle got when we were in Paris. It's coating material so potentially could work as a short coat, as I've been on the lookout for one of those, especially to wear with wider leg trousers. But I think I just really liked it as is, worn over a thin playsuit, almost like a dress which seasonally isn't practical at all...

That blazer is a lovely shape, bo. I think my blazers are generally quite short and fitted, they just didn't feel right at the beginning of lockdown, when I was only outside once a day for a walk in the park. Hopefully autumn will mean I get to wear them more.

Floisme · 22/08/2020 10:15

That looks really nice bo. Are you sure &Other Stories didn't hear us talking and rush out a display? Wink I think it's a clever idea, whoever had it first. I can't be the only one trying to work out how to dress down smarter clothes and this is in tune with the zeitgeist but also looks fresher than Blazer and jeans.

quirkychick · 22/08/2020 13:58

My brown, cord skirt, it has patch pockets, but it was so cloudy this morning, the light wasn't good. Artificial light was even worse.

There's now a 'smart joggers' and a 'brown clothing' thread Shock I fear we're losing our fingerspitzengefühl and falling victim to the algorithms...

Like the brown mini though quirky, I'm sure lots could be worn with that.

Well if &Other Stories is listening (which may certainly be possible as the new collection was a lot less aimless late twenties insta obsessives and a lot more 30+ trying to look like she's got her life together with a ridiculous bounty of silk shirts, there's a fab dark green one but the colour didn't pick up well on my camera) than they need to bloody hire me to model that blazer because this picture is a horrible representation of it. I'm thinking of ordering it (but the picture has somewhat made me hold back) and the joggers instead of having to deal with the changing rooms (and if it doesn't work as a short winter coat I may just copy the pattern and lengthen it to make into a dress don't tell them, but if they're listening, how about you make me that dress instead, or a short jumpsuit version, I'm thinking a nice woven linen/viscose mix with a bit of texture and the tiniest hint of sheen to it to highlight curves but overall it should read matte).

You think it's getting strange on S&B - yesterday I was accused on another board of shilling for Donald Trump.

Holy fuck that jacket! When I first opened the pic I thought it was one of those fleece things that zip up the front.

Great find quirky I think a cord mini with thick ribbed tights is one of the pleasures of autumn.

Going to check out the &Other Stories joggers now, and then the brown clothes tread. I've missed brown Grin

banivani · 23/08/2020 15:43

I fell off the thread and think I’ll just jump back in without trying to catch up too much. But sorry about your mother Xing, you seem to have a lot on your plate.

Listen are we fawning over the Uniqlo colour palette of sludge? Are we? 😉 Am very offended I didn’t get the preview in an email btw.

I’ve been loving my shirt dresses and would love more. For me they are great summer wear. Can’t find any I like and that fit well even though EVERYONE is wearing them here. A woman at work who is 60+ clearly thinks this fashion for shirt dresses is ridiculous. My mother used to wear those she says. We are deluded is the subtext.

I am not sewing now, I have no space. I’ve enjoyed the photos though!

botemp · 23/08/2020 17:43

Well Flo you did mention softening on Margaret Thatcher the other day, so who knows at this point...🤨 Wink I may be morbidly curious as to how someone came to that conclusion but too scared to advance search.

Bani, I think at this point we should probably just change the title to, 'we are sludge'. Uniqlo snubbed me too, bastards.

I'm trying to imagine the deluded shirt dresses that that woman's mother wore, so like the 60s/70s? Did they still wear pinafores under them (I've gone down a costube rabbit hole lately). What's in the ultimate shirt dress, and what's wrong with all the others?

OP posts:
botemp · 23/08/2020 17:48

I did a quick Google of 1970s shirt dress. Ahem, your colleague may be on to something, they look pretty identical. I do really like this YSL one though.

My lips are sealed bo. For one thing, I don't want to bring them on here Shock

Now you mention it, I didn't get a Uniqlo email either, I just thought it was that time of year and went hunting. As for sludge, I find the right shade can be oddly flattering - is that just me?

I was wondering where you were bani I too can remember my mum wearing shirt dresses. They won't have been YSL but they were quite likely from the golden age of M&S and I'd probably be all over them now if only she'd kept them. No pinafores though, except when baking.

quirkychick · 23/08/2020 20:29

There was a pinafore version of my skirt... but I wasn't tempted. I had a black, cord mini in the 90s, but I also wore it bare-legged in summer. This one has thick lining, so I think it's certainly an autumn piece, though it was in the sale. I'm liking the idea of ribbed tights too.

That's an awful photo of that jacket, I agree it looks like fleece. I think I might need some kind of joggers, as my ancient, Celtic & Co, jersey harems are dying. They're already relegated to pyjamas/yoga gear but they will not last much longer. Didn't someone link to some Bam ones ages ago? Maybe red.

banivani · 23/08/2020 20:57

Yes I think I’m being more housecoat than YSL 🤔 it was the attached one if you’re curious. Also comes in sludge but they’re sold out on that website. 😉 I think my colleague thinks we are deluded for thinking it’s a good look, not that the dresses are deluded. She’s a rock chick.

banivani · 23/08/2020 20:58

Am lolling at Flo being a shill for ze Trump btw.

botemp · 24/08/2020 09:19

Ah, yes, I remember now, it was linen and a very nice dress. I see trouva still has one in a dk40 and dk38 at half price in the newborn baby poo mustard sludge colour. Yeah, I like them, you can carry on wearing them into mild autumn weather with ankle boots. Stick a biker jacket on top, wrap a leopard scarf around your wrist and Ms rock chick may come around 👩‍🎤

Yes, I'm still lolling about Flo, the orange salesman, too. If they're ever looking for feedback on your performance, I'll have to be honest and say you've been terrible at your job on here. I mean, not as bad as Trump himself, but you know, not much better but as a true Trump shill you will take that as flattery. Almost as good bad as your great leader. Stay away from pizza and all that...

Floisme · 25/08/2020 09:17

Yes I have been called many things in my time on here - and some of them with good reason - but that was a whole new experience. Mind you I've been talking about wearing more colour again, haven't I, so maybe I should check out a MAGA hat.

banivani · 25/08/2020 13:25

Baby poo sludge is about right (although rather attractive poo, I played it safe and took the black but ...). Sadly I need a 42.

The colour of the MAGA hat is quite nice, tbf.

I thought of your dress Bo when I got a Cos email, they have a maxi dress out now that reminds me of your silhouette (long pink one). I'm glad you feel more pleased with your clothes.

Speaking of lovely toes in sandals (can't remember who it was and the website is misbehaving and not letting me go to first page) - I've failed at getting decent shoes all summer. Everything I have is ugly and/or gives me blisters and/or is just too casual. I was hoping for something a bit office decent but ok when it's hot. I just can't master shoes! What is the ideal (flat) shoe to wear with say the shirt dress above to the office on a warm day? Toes covered, preferably.

botemp · 25/08/2020 13:48

Cos, copying my dress and snubbing me while they're at it 🤨

I like a good red but I still remember one of my still life drawing teachers going on and on how it was the colour of fascists and communists, specifically the red white black palette is engineered to incite rage. Ahem, he's probably not wrong...

If you just wear the maga cap inside out you can pretend it's Vêtements, Flo and you'll be openly embraced by the champagne socialists again.

Bani, with that dress, not that I can wear them or walk in them, those flatter castañer espadrilles would be work appropriate in a not too formal setting (which I can't imagine many Swedish offices are) and feel suitably summery. I also saw all birds (they just opened a shop here) had some sort of comfy technical slip ons, which, like most of their designs, leans a bit frumpy although these weren't too bad as they weren't cut so conservatively. I did consider them as house shoes (bit pricey for that) and thought they'd appeal to toe coverers in the heat (it's a mesh type thing but without exposing skin) who need a bit of comfort but not clumps for shoes. Anyhow, they'd not be anything amazing under that dress but they wouldn't jar either and just leave the focus on the dress.
