I’m 43 is this dress too short for me?

www.warehouse.co.uk/gb/clothing/dresses/pintuck-puff-sleeve-mini-dress/037263.html?dwvar_037263_color=77&cgid=dresses

It’s just to wear about the house on warm days, maybe school run if we ever get back to school Smile on a hot day if I’m feeling brace enough.

I would wear it with trainers or flat Grecian sandals.

I’m size 10, good legs (well good thighs, my calves are skinny and shapeless)

I have no boobs or waist so this (shapeless) smock type of dress is usually the best style for me.

I would be buying from John Lewis not warehouse itself in case the upcoming administration scuppers orders! Poor warehouse staff Sad

But at 43: is this just too short?! I’m braver than I used to be at eg 33. I give far fewer fucks (just the occasional one) Grin

I don't disagree pictish

AnnUumellemahaye · 17/04/2020 13:43

Do you get this wound up about men wearing shorts or sleeveless tshirts or is it only women you go this bananas about?

Some shorts, yes. The other day I saw a man in a pair of baggy sweatpant shorts and he obviously had no pants on underneath so his penis was clearly visible flapping around under the fabric. I think I might have pulled a face.

Sleeveless t-shirts - it depends on where and when. Mowing his lawn? don't care. Sunbathing in the park? In the gym? Don't care. But I don't especially want to see a man's armpit hair and nipples if he's standing next to me on a packed train with his arm up in the air holding onto one of the straps, no. Do you?

JMAngel1 · 17/04/2020 14:02

That dress isn't that short at all.- go for it.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 17/04/2020 14:33

@AnnUumellemahaye You know, I really couldn't give a fuck, but seeing an actual nipple or penis is not anywhere near the same as a woman wearing a short dress and it is a bit fucked up that you can't see that.

redwoodmazza · 17/04/2020 14:57

It looks like a top - not a dress!!!

AnnUumellemahaye · 17/04/2020 15:03

Where did I suggest it was? I was answering a direct question from another poster, not comparing those things to the OP's dress. If you are going to try to make me out to be some sort of Mary Whitehouse at least get your facts straight.

Blondiney · 17/04/2020 15:14

It's not even that short. I don't understand the fuss.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 17/04/2020 15:20

It's lovely, but I'd wear cropped leggings or something with it. Otherwise the moment you sit, bend, squat, twist etc you will be flashing your arse at folks.

BeNiceToYourSister · 17/04/2020 16:31

It’s not even a particularly short dress. Late 30s here and I wouldn’t wear anything longer than that! Not that age should even be a factor in your decision, OP. If you like it, wear it!

Terralee · 17/04/2020 18:35

I wear short dresses a lot & im 43

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 18/04/2020 17:12

No not at all. I'm nearly 47 and I'd wear it.

Diyhaircutgonewrong · 18/04/2020 20:22

haven't read the whole thread but I would call this a longish t-shirt. It's not a dress.

Unless you wear leggings or so, I would not wear it. Not with bare legs. The lightest bit of wind or bending down will uncover your arse. Nothing to do with age. Anyone with a shroud of dignity wouldn't want to put their knickers on display during the school run.

Pinkarsedfly · 18/04/2020 20:25

I’d like a shroud of dignity...

eaglejulesk · 18/04/2020 21:51

To think l got to my 40s without knowing that anyone over the years who got the slightest glimpse of my knickers needed counselling.

Grin Grin Grin

There are some very puritanical people on this thread!! As I said in an earlier post, does no-one remember the 60s?

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/04/2020 22:32

Age is no barrier to anything.

My mother dyed my fathers hair blue the other day. They are both 69. I dyed mine pink, DD's 2 and 3 went purple, DS2 bleach his natural ginger bright white. Because why the hell not?! He ROCKS it! She is very allergic to everything but caught the ends with her fingers while dying his (on purpose) and looks like she should be in an M&S ad!

Show me where its written down that only someone of a certain age/size/colour/whatever can wear anything.

TheDropBear · 19/04/2020 01:12

Just seen that this is on the daily mail.

Most of the commenters seem to think OP is the model Grin

CaptSkippy · 19/04/2020 10:54

The Daily Fail copy-pasted this? Grin Must be a slow day for them.

Snowymascot · 19/04/2020 11:23

I don’t think the dress is too short, I would wear it and I’m 49 x

Gwenhwyfar · 19/04/2020 13:58

I'll be the only one to say NO I suppose. It looks like a night shirt to me, like you've just got out of bed and it almost shows the bum.

nuitdesetoiles · 19/04/2020 19:46

I like it and it's not too short at all, I'm 45 and wear stuff that short and shorter . My legs are my favourite feature.

I have several black short summer dresses that are due an airing soon...likely just the back garden! wear mostly dresses in summer as I have an aversion to shorts, don't know why just think they're a bit middle aged. Sorry short wearers.

Very puritanical and slightly worrying attitudes on this thread..

PIXIR · 19/04/2020 20:00

go for it

bringbacksideburns · 19/04/2020 20:18

I wouldn't wear it now at 51 without leggings, no. But I'm no longer a size 10 Grin

I possibly may have worn it at your age on holiday because I used to have good legs.

If your legs are quite similar to the model's it will look fine. It's the confidence you need to wear it.

I think I'd feel.more comfortable in it if I was 5 ft 5 or shorter but I'm tall like you so it will be quite short.

LisaD76 · 19/04/2020 20:21

Not at all.... we are the same age although I think you are a little slimmer than I (I’m a 10-12 depending on style) and this is my preferred length. The good thing about hitting our age is that we don’t care as much what anyone else thinks.... as long as you are comfortable in it did them!

PhoneLock · 19/04/2020 21:18

Surely that depends on the shorts? I wear shorts and I don't think anyone would call them middle aged.

Snort at shroud of dignity.
It should be a mumsnet ‘swears buy’. We could buy en masse and get a discount. Grin
