I think governments are going to need to do much more to help out industries, independent shops, travel firms, events companies, catering sector and so, so much more.

I go to Tescos. Oh dear.

botemp · 16/03/2020 10:56

Flo, I dispute your assertion that BJ hates to look bad

I'd be more concerned about independent shops and the lead up to lockdowns. Government here is pretty much guaranteeing, offering loans, paying out partial wages as a form of unemployment benefits, etc. to small and medium businesses due to the lockdown, it's the period before that which made many struggle. My local French baker was considering closing as it's half bakery/half cafe. They earn mostly with the cafe due to the higher profit margins but no one was coming in and the balance was putting them under tremendous stress and now that that's been unburdened they're able to keep running the bakery without major financial worries.

Linky please, Bani, I'm interested in all forms of entertainment atm as there's not much work to do. Finished catching up with the latest season of Succession (HBO) this weekend, it's fantastic. Best show on TV right now (granted I don't watch all that much but this is really standout TV).

Linky to the chef?

www.koket.se/kockar/jennie-wallden This is where he found her recipes and started cooking her stuff.

She won Swedish marsterchef in 2013 but flew completely under our radar as we don't watch it. After that she's had a successful career and opened a Korean restaurant. She was adopted to Sweden when she was six and has returned to Korean roots in her cooking (must have been so difficult being adopted when that old and with loads of memories of her family!). All her recipes are very "cookable", they always turn out well so we like her. It's a really easy way into (mostly) Korean food.

Floisme · 16/03/2020 11:43

Grin Where did you find that pic? I still maintain he is very conscious of his image - hair etc all carefully cultivated. He wants a funeral bigger than Thatcher's and a tomb in Westminster Abbey.

You are all putting me to shame with your recipes and your gardening projects. I have a bad feeling that if I'm ever asked, 'What did you do in the pandemic, Grandma?' I will have to admit to watching reruns of ER and back-to-back Billy Wilder films. But Flowers to everyone with young children and elderly relatives.

banivani · 16/03/2020 12:17

God I'm at work. Business as usual, I'm just washing my hands more often. I kind of wish I was home, at the same time work and commuting is wonderfully quiet Grin

Floisme · 16/03/2020 12:29

Oh I'm not quarantined or anything yet, just off work today and making plans Grin I would hate working from home.

botemp · 16/03/2020 12:51

Google BJ + shorts at your own peril. They tend to feature a lot in media profiles about him outside of the UK. I think just to drive home the eccentricity narrative (we're not buying it though, everyone adores Bercow instead). Perhaps it's as contrived as his hair, perhaps he also still has a nanny who lays out his work clothes every day and he's just clueless about what to wear when it isn't the work uniform.

Worryingly, I suspect some designer (my money's on Alessandro Michele at Gucci or Virgil Abloh at LV/off white) taking this as inspiration and making toddler dresses himself for grownups a legitimate runway trend...

I'm not quarantined either, was even at the supermarket this morning and they seem to be getting back to normal. I do have a cold sore on the roof of my mouth which briefly sent OH into a panic (he's not really hearing me when I say it's not an issue if we get it, it's an issue if everyone gets it all at once and a bloody cold sore is not Covid19). I've had it before, it can be indicative of a lowered immune system but I'm not reading it as anything terrible. Was a bit of a ball ache getting hold of some zinc lozenges this weekend as apparently that's another panic buy item off the internet. Cleared up almost completely now Smile

Thanks for the link Bani, lots looks good. I like the look of the cod with chili beurre noisette but butter has been a bit scarce here so I'll hold off on making that until I have an extra pack.

DH is concerned that his cardio history raises his risk factor -- so I have been "discouraged" from going to Pilates. He's working, but DS/ systech is busy setting up WFH strategy and splitting the workforce into A and B teams to minimise the contagion and contact risks. We have two confirmed cases in the nearest city so far.

But XingDog had a great walk in spring sunshine this morning and we've been gardening this afternoon. We are in the process of constructing a tiny lavender "field" on a raised bed that is so dry nothing survives summer in it except ants. Plus I dried the washing on the line for the first time!

The June nuptials are looking iffy, as is our holiday. The bridegroom can leave Saudi but won't be allowed back in, so the civil ceremony has been postponed, and won't be rescheduled until things are clearer.

quirkychick · 16/03/2020 20:52

Ow, that sounds sore, bo, I can get cold sores in my nose which are pretty horrible.

Xing, my dad has underlying cardio issues (lives in France) we're doing daily updates to check on each other. Though, they're in full lock down now. I think it's only a matter of time before schools close here. Dd1 will be off again as she has a nasty cold (runny nose, achy, sore throat, but no cough or temp). Dd2 seems fine, so I will take her to school, as change in routine is a disaster generally and she's already had the cold a week or so ago.

I did get a lot done today, as most of our building work is done, hopefully finished tomorrow. So, I did quite a bit of spring cleaning as there's so much dust! Catching up on laundry too, as I've put off quite a bit with all the upheaval and nowhere to put it.

ToEllewithIt · 17/03/2020 11:48

Just dropping in as you’ve dropped off my active threads. Between work and the schools closing I don’t know whether I’m coming or going. Stay safe Parisiennes. I’ll be back when things are calmer.

ToEllewithIt · 17/03/2020 11:50

My punctuation is not making clear that unfortunately my work has not closed.

quirkychick · 17/03/2020 12:24

That sounds tough, Elle. Some schools have closed or particular classes have closed due to staff self-isolating.

Floisme · 17/03/2020 12:33

Sorry to hear about all these difficulties. Yesterday morning feels a long time ago and I expect my joshing and grumbling will not age well Flowers

botemp · 17/03/2020 20:15

Hope you'll manage to get a better work/life balance soon Elle Wine

I've found some good Pilates videos on YouTube, Xing. I like the ones that require equipment most, I've always found pure matwork terribly boring. I think it's good to get some daily exercise in to keep us sane and immune systems up to scratch. Shame about the nuptials, must be pretty demoralising for the couple.

It's not that bad quirky, in the nose sounds way worse Shock it's cleared up almost completely now, I just took the maximum dose the first 24hrs and I'll take the recommended dose just in case over the next few. I have a bit of upper nose congestion today though 🧐 I'd forgotten your house is tissue central year-round, hope everyone's on the mend and the closets are looking good.

I'm wondering if I should tackle some DIY, but the nice thing about DIY is working hard all day and then eating somewhere to get away from the mess and then there's all the extra runs for forgotten or lost bits... Have contemplated trying my hand at sewing, but not sure what to make, I've been terribly uninterested in clothes lately 😱😱😱

Hello all, been a crazy couple of days for me here. Will not bore you with detail but managed to get myself really worked up and anxious about the whole thing. But of course still work, childcare etc etc
Anyhow, I think is because I am trying to hard to make it “perfect” which I have to accept it will not be. Instead I have to accept to have a bit of a plan of things which will be productive and good to do with children but also accepting that many days it will be what it will be...
is the lack of control what gets me.
Stay safe you all , I will check in again FlowersGinCakeBrewWine

banivani · 18/03/2020 10:17

Pilatesology have opened up a bunch of videos for everyone, no subscription needed.

I'm carrying on as normal. The whole country feels like a very hot Sunday afternoon in July - minus the heat. Very quiet. I've decided I'm very supportive of the Swedish Public Health Agency and as a matter of fact I might email them and tell them so.

I hope everyone is feeling alright - the panic is the worst enemy ((hugs))

XingMing · 18/03/2020 13:31

Thanks for that bani but it doesn't seem to be open in the UK. One of my teachers is going to be live-streaming classes on Zoom in the next few days so I shall see how that goes.

Today's Times 2 has a round up of the fashion editors' favourite on line shopping sites, some of them new to me. It's behing the paywall of course, but if you can get access, it may be something to while away a few hours.

Floisme · 18/03/2020 14:20

Thanks for the tip, Xing I have a registration with the Times which means I can access 2 articles a week so that takes care of one of them.

The Whistles bile green barrel leg jeans came out of the washing machine a decent mid brown, which I'm pretty happy with. Interestingly the stitching has dyed too, which presumably means it's cotton. I've got a photo on my phone which I can post when it's finished recharging.

I am working from home for at least the rest of the week and bored out of my skull (and yes I realise that's another comment that won't age well). How people do it all the time is beyond me.

banivani · 18/03/2020 15:25

Sorry, I wasn't clear - it's not all videos just a selection, I saw it on facebook. So far there's only one. :/ pilatesology.com/free-at-home-workout/?fbclid=IwAR2prbZZ5QM17LERO6NKj2d6J-zP0WXEA9KGQe8pPM987U19VNn_OyK49wI

Gin for you Red, this whole epidemic mental processing is not all that different from the stages of grief (I acknowledge it's somewhat bollocks but it works here 1. Denial; 2. Anger; 3. Bargaining; 4. Depression; 5. Acceptance). I am currently back in stage 1 insistent it's nothing more than a cold after having sneezed twice today 😷

I was going to say I'm not all that interested in online shopping but I've just ordered some shoes from &Other Stories Blush I'd tried them on a while ago and stuck them on shoptagr (who alerted me) thinking I'd buy them with a 30% off promotion as they're not will wear them all the time shoes but pretty much forgot about them. It's been a really long time since I bought heels 'heels' but they're not really like heels, they look sort of half boot on and fit seamlessly with opaques into a sort of connected shoe boot thingy, very Dries van Noten/Old Céline. The pictures really don't sell them, so no wonder they've been marked down to 70%. I'm distinctly missing the bargain high Sad

This came after thinking earlier about Flo wishing to support her independent shops and was mentally making an inventory of independent shops that are online. I've found some things on Trouva (a portal for independent shops mostly focusing on interior design but they have a bit of clothing with very affordable shipping). I've spotted this maxi dress from a shop in Paris which looks good but this is the only model shot so I'm trying to find it online elsewhere to get a better feel of fit. Also loved these Italian linen trousers from a shop in Sheffield but I think only left in a size 14. The brand, Transit, seems to have a lot of nice things, quite pricey though.

I can only think of Farfetch otherwise as another portal for independent boutiques, but it might be a nice effort to buy from these places if buying the non essentials.

Thank you for the glass Bo.
After one of my worse nights with a panic attack but not to too too scary as many years ago (due to different causes) I was there too. This morning I am waiting call from gp.
I kinda know how to get out but is tricky and hard work.
Anyhow, good idea about buying from independents Smile, I thought this morning that I needed some colourful lounge wear type thing, not lounge wear but something not constrictive at all and with nice colours, so I can wear at home and feel a tiny bit cheered up, not WFH (I learnt the acronym) with old rags looking s*
When I feel like this I cannot stand any jeans or bras, the non bra is a non issue for me as not much to tempt gravity and I have a few nice bralettes (sp?)

Those stages make sense. I am talking to gp and trying to get phone therapy and I have a mindfulness book and cd I used years ago and helped me. I am also very much in touch with my close friends here.
I feel good I can download/share this here.

botemp · 19/03/2020 12:02

Of course you can, Red Flowers we all have our wobbles and it's great you're getting help and have support around you Smile

I'm the same WRT clothes, briefly contemplated indulging my resort/cruise wear desires as all things floaty and breezy sound perfect right now with the heating on all day. I'm curbing it with pulling out my spring/summer wardrobe this weekend. There's a new Justine Leconte video that I watched last night about upcoming s/s trends from the runway, I assume it was recorded well in advance as it felt completely irrelevant with lots of tailoring, crop tops, and fitted pieces, very much the exact opposite of what I want to be wearing now. I want pyjama levels of comfort without it actually looking like pyjamas.

Floisme · 19/03/2020 12:10

Red Flowers Share as much as you like. This is easy for me to say as my son is grown up but I really wouldn't worry about making this an enriching experience for your children. They are living through historic times and will have amazing stories to tell their children / grandchildren. That's more than enough.

Thanks for the independents tips bo

XingMing · 19/03/2020 14:14

Flowers for you Red, and feel at liberty to share any fears while we attempt to divert you.

Some cosy cocooning clothing, i.e. not my stretched and faded stuff, would be a good wardrobe refresh. But on balance, I think my main look will be gardenwear, and I have lots of dogrobbers kept for that purpose, plus the painting and decorating, and spring cleaning I may have to tackle if I run out of displacement activity.

banivani · 19/03/2020 16:37

Sorry to read you've been struggling, Red Flowers I'm totally the opposite - although I do worry about the economy. The disease itself I can take with equinamity since it isn't a danger to children primarily. Callous of me, but true. And my son is going to school as normal of course, if he was home playing x-box all day I'd probably flip.

Today I have an ever so slight sore throat so wfh. Doing The Right Thing and My Bit and all. Grin
