I know I’m a killer I am. Incidentally there was not. one. other. person in the museum ;)

Forgot to try it on back to front but I agree that the back is almost nicer. I was distracted by shop almost closing and how much I liked the length and feel of the dress 🙄

Tracing a garment to make a pattern is a fair amount of work though if you do it thoroughly! Is this a serious proposition?

botemp · 05/05/2020 18:33

There probably were no other people because you made them disappear already 🤔

Not that serious, I'm still waiting on supplies so currently still deluded I have any sewing skills at all. Once that becomes apparent again I'll happily be forking over lots of money to people who do it better than me.

banivani · 05/05/2020 19:01

Erm how much are we talking about in terms of supplies?

botemp · 05/05/2020 19:21

What I'm waiting on? Not much, it's just a few metres of practice fabric and bits and bobs, €25 including shipping. Or what that dress needs? I think it'll be about 3 metres of fabric, no idea what quality cotton costs because I've not seen any tbh. I'll check Joel and Son and try not to have a heart attack.

Ah you held back then. My last bout of omg I’m definitely becoming a sewing person ended up with me acquiring a rotary cutter and cutting mat 😂

A really easy way to trace an existing item of clothing is to lay some cardboard down, then some Swedish tracing paper oR other thin paper like baking paper. Fold your garment in half and straighten it up neatly. Put in a few pins to hold it all in place, and then pin through the seam lines, like your doing a dot to dot. You'll have to shift around a bit to do sleeves, anything tricky, but by the end you'll have a pin prick outline of your garment that you just need to add seam allowances to.

Meter meter.dk should have some nice cotton's and would be cheaper than Joel and Son. Fabric godmother also has the occasional deadstock. I've managed to get ex Vivienne Westwood lining material from there in the past.

ThisNameIsDifferentFromTheLast · 05/05/2020 20:27

That dress does look incredibly simple for the price!!

botemp · 05/05/2020 21:00

Name, the sort of equivalent of the pound shop here sells these garbage bags (for building rubble) which are apparently perfect for tracing patterns from a garment. Just the right ability to manipulate, very large, and transparent enough to see what you're doing, supposedly. They're rubbish for actual rubbish though 🤣 I've been meaning to get some, pin prick outline should work with that too.

However, having done a bit of further Googling, I think the pattern is actually really basic. It may be very nice cotton (Japanese, maybe? It's made in Italy, do the Italians do a super nice cotton, I must admit beyond pima and supima I don't know much about cotton) but beyond that it's quite simple.

Final nail in the coffin was this blurb:

Cristaseya is an eclectic lifestyle project biasing between fashion, art, decoration and more. Collaborations are nurtured and welcomed, not scientifically planned, and translate into a cross-pollination of knowledge and crafts. Tropidelico is the name given to the fruits of these encounters. Cristaseya Tropidelico playfully subverts notions of use and form. A trait of dry humor lands a twist of lightness: objects are impeccably crafted and eminently useful, yet the iconography is turned upside down, resulting in a glitch. Something slightly unfamiliar or an apparent lack of sense invite users to quiz and interact. The Cristaseya Tropidelico editions ensure that form follows function, making it clear that both are simply a playful state of mind.

In essence, it's just another 'art' project, otherwise known as more money than sense person who attended an art academy for a couple of days decides to make things and reinvents the wheel by pointing at wheel and saying let's make those for ££££. You have to be just as clueless to the mechanics of the rest of the world to buy into it, I think.

TROPIDELICO

botemp · 05/05/2020 21:21

Did it take you to TROPIDELICO to piss yourself laughing there, Bani? I got stuck on biasing...

OP posts:
quirkychick · 05/05/2020 21:30

You got me at "eclectic lifestyle project biasing" Grin.

It's like Toast, don't get me wrong, I really like Toast. When they send the A4 size catalogues with all the pseudo philosophy in, I mean, really not necessary.

botemp · 05/05/2020 21:37

If only Bani's ever more question raising house find from a Wes Anderson film could be accompanied by a blurb as bloated as that. I don't think I'd be able to come up for air for a week Grin

Someone please change their social media profile thingy to 'eclectic lifestyle project biasing'. Could even work as a job description.

OP posts:
banivani · 05/05/2020 21:45

I thought I did well to last as long as tropidelico! What a load of nonsense Grin

botemp · 06/05/2020 08:29

Meter.dk is gone Sad did they close shop because they're inundated with orders?

OP posts:
Floisme · 06/05/2020 08:31

Good grief, I though Toast had no peer when it came to wankery and bad poetry, but maybe I was wrong.
Mind you I still want to look like the model in last year's Toast catalogue.

Floisme · 06/05/2020 08:32

Oh sorry bo I missed your post. That's sad. Are they gone for good do you know?

botemp · 06/05/2020 08:35

I hope not, I think they probably just have more orders than they can handle and shut down the shop front temporarily? Maybe it's just a technical glitch, can't imagine they'd go bust in a time of high demand.

OP posts:
botemp · 06/05/2020 08:38

I take it all back. Name's link was faulty (I assume MN just auto-generated it into a link), it's metermeter.dk.

OP posts:
Floisme · 06/05/2020 08:45

Merchant and Mills seem to be opening about one day a fortnight. They clear the last lot of orders before they reopen, so maybe they're doing the same.

Floisme · 06/05/2020 08:46

Oh so they're open?

botemp · 06/05/2020 08:49

Yes , yes, they're open. I was just being a headless hysterical chicken who should Google before spreading fake news. (I'm allowed to refer to myself as hysterical, aren't I, before FWR comes over to rip me a new arsehole).

OP posts:
Floisme · 06/05/2020 08:57

As a signed up member of FWR I will give you a special dispensation (nearly as good as the pope's though won't get you into Heaven I'm afraid). Anyway good news!.

banivani · 06/05/2020 10:47

Oh I'm glad you were an hysterical chicken Bo, it would've been sad if one of the shops I've started window shopping at had closed ;) I'm considering getting a trouser pattern from Lekala with my measurements and really get started on making my own/learning how to.

So Vinted. Is it separate sites in every country? I can't remember.

ToEllewithIt · 06/05/2020 11:35

The title of this thread turned out to be oddly prescient didn't it. Soothsayer bo strikes again.

I need to steer clear of all this sewing chat. The last time I flirted with making my own I ended up in dress design night classes and spent too much on fabric and supplies. I did like pattern drafting though, the mathematician in me enjoyed working it out. Fortunately I stopped short of buying a machine and an overlocker which is frankly just as well. I’m thoroughly engrossed in The Great British Sewing Bee at the moment which is always an enjoyable watch.

That pseudo-intellectual babble is the worst I’ve ever read. “A trait of dry humor lands a twist of lightness” – what does that even mean?

Mackrel with pickled rhubarb… drools.

I like that brown silk blouse, the buttons are great.

I still need to photograph the Loulou studio trousers.

I think we’re going to pull the plug on our summer holiday plans for August and defer to 2021 which means I’ve no need at all for the many linen dresses that are catching my eye, but could use some basic linen shorts. Are ones with an elasticated waist awful? I can’t decide.

Floisme · 06/05/2020 11:43

I think an elasticated waist with belt loops and a fake fly can be great and give a much better fit than a standard waistband. It's one of the things Toast often do well and another reason why I put up with their pseudo babble.
