I like both the white and navy sculptural dresses they have quite a different feel to each other. I like the whisker shirt too.

I'm still in jeans (old flares today) as we are still venturing out to quiet parks and I need something practical. I'm trying toake it more interesting with a spring scarf, a secondhand purply one which looks 60s, but isn't. No proper photos, as my mirror is still not in the bedroom, awaiting the old wardrobe being dismantled, but there's nowhere to put it. Your confinement outfit looks very chic as well as relaxed, bo.

quirkychick · 04/04/2020 11:28

*to make

Chochito · 04/04/2020 12:03

botemp That shirt is great.

banivani · 05/04/2020 09:27

Regarding the t-shirt pictures - I wouldn’t have noticed that they should be lying flatter which I attribute to the fact that I have poor spatial awareness. But the neckline picture is yikes. I’ve only looked at their dresses and jumpers and thought the dresses fit badly but the jumpers seem ok.

Elle I love your power jacket it’s absolutely gorgeous. Very sort of dialed down Grace Jones.

Personally I’m not a fan of pie crust collars on myself. They’re so hard to wear unless you’re going full modesty or are so cool in yourself you can carry it off. I think you might be, but it could also tip you over into matron. Speaking of which, has anyone watched Unorthodox on Netflix?

One of the saddest moments of my fashion life is that about ten years ago or more I bought a nice crust blouse on super sale from a mail order company, because the fabric was silk/cotton and gorgeous. I then didn’t research how to alter the neckline properly and cut too much off. 😩

Other Stories are a bit shit with their pictures aren’t they? That green dress (gorgeous on the hanger) has one photo! I wish more clothes companies would do line drawings like Gudrun Sjödén does tbh. Would simplify a lot of choices!

Hi Cho!

I noticed that in Cos’s new stuff that they have a lot of “change the silhouette with a zip or a button” stuff. It’s interesting but would have to be done really well. I think a lot of stuff like that only looks great one way. The other way you’re asking yourself what the random button or zip or tie is doing there.

For your amusement (😉😬) new things from my Facebook feed:

Shoes from flattered and myrqvist
www.flattered.com
myrqvist.se/

I have a real soft spot for the Tylko shelves which Facebook seems to know because they are relentlessly pushed at me. I can however not afford them so 😑 tylko.com/
www.rebeccaminkoff.com/ 😴
www.marimekko.com/se_en/ 🙄
uk.shopzuri.com/ 🤔

I am eyeing these things on Tradera atm but am unsure about necessity and/or sizing so haven’t pulled the trigger.

I also bought the attached trousers in Arket’s sale because couldn’t resist any more. We’ll see, am regaining the weight I lost so ...

Yes, I watched Unorthodox, it's very bingeable and a very interesting insight into that specific community.

Lead actress is brilliant (I thought she was a lot older playing younger but she's quite young so just really talented). Foreign language so I'm much more immersed, there were some things that I was less a fan of but it didn't detract enough to spoil the entirety of it.

The accompanying documentary was a nice ending/rounding up to soothe the 'boo it's finished' feels. It's an interesting watch at the moment considering the ultra religious response to the Covid19 crisis which is very different to the rest of us.

Thank you everyone for all the pics and links - just what I need to take me away from my Improving Reading. So far I've mainly clocked the humungously ££ but very nice whisker shirt which had more than a bit of a Vivienne Westwood vibe, I thought. And bani I'm wearing some dark green trousers today a bit like those in your pic, with a purple silk shirt, cos I'm going to wear more colour if it kills me. The shirt's a dye job and, if I'm honest, it came out a bit too bright but it goes well with the trousers, if not my face.

I'll look out for 'Unorthodox' although I can never find anything on Netflicks.

Hi Choch I shall look forward to your postcards when you go living the dream in Paris.

banivani · 05/04/2020 11:12

Lead actress really lifted the show. The Hasidic bits felt more fleshed out than the Berlin bits which frankly were a bit diversity points in nature, but she carried it. The actor who plays Moishe is fantastic too, he comes from a community like that himself and it really added to his performance of the prodigal son who can never return really.

Got any good links to the ultra religious attitude? I got stuck in reading about Hasidic sects but only facts ;)

botemp · 05/04/2020 11:29

Not links at the ready but Israel is having huge issues with (ultra) orthodox communities defying orders not to congregate and pray together but it's pretty essential to Jewish religion (in the ultra orthodox tradition) that it is experienced communally, they just can't be told to practice their faith individually.

We have a tiny 'Bible belt' of orthodox protestants and it is allowed to congregate with up to 30 with everyone staggered out at 1.5m distance for religious purposes. The exception was, I think, to allow tiny weddings and funerals but the ultra orthodox protestants here have been using it as a loophole and subsequently we're seeing the possibility of another epicentre emerging there. I expect that the 30pax for religious purposes will be scrapped asap.

I've been left wondering how the Amish are managing too as they're so anti technology.

Yes, Moishe was brilliant too and Yanky (which for the longest time I thought was a nickname) was done really well too, not so much stellar acting performance but just an incredibly believable performance (which I always prefer to a look at me I'm acting so good, looking at you Marriage Story) that really gave understanding to a character that could easily have lapsed into caricature. I liked that none of the Williamsburg characters were black and white. The Berlin aspect and roles felt too insubstantial in comparison somewhat.

botemp · 05/04/2020 11:33

Sorry just realised you may have instead been asking what the ultra orthodox attitude was in general. I think it's difficult because they are like sects/communities and they don't all follow the same doctrine. The community in Antwerp is huge and there's a large number of them who are (ultra) orthodox and very anti Israel for example which you'd expect to have some sort of central authority spiritually.

quirkychick · 05/04/2020 11:49

Adding to the weird angle confinement photos, my secondhand Jasper Conran top. Definitely not orthodox. First time I've worn it.

XingMing · 05/04/2020 12:02

Love that top on you quirky.

Chochito · 05/04/2020 12:08

The Arket trousers are very nice, shape and colour. I'm envious.

banivani · 05/04/2020 12:46

I more got the impression that you’d read some sort of round up article about religious attitudes around the world or similar. Those religious sectarian groups are definitely goo to be super spreaders or second wavers. It was a Christian sect in South Korea that multiplied the number of infected there after all ... am going to lift my eyes up from my euro centric news bubble. Actually now that you wrote that Bo I realised that we get hardly any news from the Netherlands here?

Quirky that top looks very summery and playful. Where is your sackcloth? Is that a NECESSARY TOP QUIRKY?

XingMing · 05/04/2020 13:05

I have a new style love... Low Classic from Seoul. I can't find a URL to link, but try Insta. Some of us will adore it.

botemp · 05/04/2020 13:16

Lovely top quirky, although Bani may be right on the NECESSARY front. Are you allowed to cheer other people up, I mean, you lot aren't even allowed to sunbathe?

This is an article from a left leaning Israeli newspaper that gives a good rundown of the ultra orthodox, Bani. I suspect there will be a bit more coverage since the show seems to be a Netflix hit. Speaking of, has anyone seen that tiger something documentary, is it really worth watching, is it not just more batshittery in the vein of the fucking with cats thing (that I haven't watched either)?

Well I wouldn't be able to tell you what's happening in Luxembourg or Estonia either and I'm trying very hard not to read the news first thing in the morning as it's dominated by the US ATM as bodybags being forklifted into a refrigerator truck really isn't all that pleasant with breakfast Sad

The Netherlands doesn't really make for good international coverage, I think. The only unusual thing about us is that proportionally we have a high death rate which isn't down to a stressed healthcare system (at least at this point, next two weeks will be critical but they're cautiously optimistic the worst case scenario won't unfold) but we have quite a strict IC admission policy (regardless of covid19) that very much takes into consideration quality of life after admission alongside our rather progressive end of life stance means that any reporting on that outside of the Netherlands would focus on that aspect which is probably a little too much.

Understandably, no one seems to really be talking about the fact that two or three weeks of being on ventilators does not leave patients unscathed, mentally and physically (many are left with permanent damage to lungs), and while we're used to it as a nation to be having those conversations collectively and individually with HCPs, proponents of that openness elsewhere are probably sensible enough not to open up that conversation at this moment in time.

Low classic is great. Not to be that person but I've loved it for years, especially the bags, but the clothes don't use the greatest fabrics unfortunately, but that's quite the norm in S. Korea as they're not required to disclose fabric composition. Boon the shop is great too but ££££ gorgeous materials though.

Lots to catch up here!!
Firstly, I adore the top quirky
The stripes shown diagonally look great.

Unorthodox, I am loving that too. Agree on the talented actors, specially on the main actress. I have just started so no spoilers please.
In a weird way I also enjoy their way of dressing, with a twist could look really cool.
I will catch up with all the other posts in a bit. Off to the garden again.

quirkychick · 05/04/2020 14:20

No it's not an essential top Grin, but I bought it mid-winter from a charity shop (the local charity in question is currently losing £100,000 a week due to its shops being shut). The stripes are a dark brown/khaki which is nice.

Will check out low classic.

viennesewhirls · 05/04/2020 22:48

@quirkychick "that reminds of a very terrible "how not to be stressed" lecture I had at the end of teacher training, from a lecturer who had never actually taught, telling us to eat a cream cake and have a bath! Useless."

The utmost in hypocrisy was I remember a 'healthy eating' lesson in our health/enrichment class when I was about 15, where the teacher was clicking though an externally-provided slideshow. The slides kept referring to 'slimming' and how it could be done healthily. At the end, one of the 'discussion questions' asked if we felt external pressures to look a certain way. I (probably the chunkiest in the room at a size 14-16 then) responded straight away to point out the contradiction there... Ugh. I thought I'd forgotten that, but clearly not.

viennesewhirls · 05/04/2020 22:58

I see I've missed chat about abs and about the danger of piecrust collars veering too 'modest'/Little Women.

I love a pie crust collar or an Edwardian style blouse - I then have to style it with more 'modern' hemlines and hairstyle, whether that's a big swooshy ponytail or something else. I can very easily veer into looking too 'classic'/ 'costumes' if my hair looks too Gibson Girl. Bright modern lipstick helps - I've been wearing Beso in Stila's Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, inspired by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (although I bought the sheer one).

RE abs - I've been loving the Down Dog Barre workouts - although on Friday it served me up a series of very quads-focussed exercises and all my blood ended up in my thighs and not my head so I had to stop, whoops. Normally I go the whole way through and find that every muscle from my abs downwards is screaming at me, but in a good way. Their apps are free until May 1st, or later if you have an education email address. Definitely recommend.

banivani · 06/04/2020 07:27

Down dog barre you say? Not that I am doing any exercises on my own, I miss my classes ...

banivani · 06/04/2020 07:38

Pressed too soon. Thank you for the article Bo. From a Catholic viewpoint my MIL is a bit upset that all Masses have been cancelled here in Sweden. I think it's commendably pragmatic esp now at Easter when the churches would've been packed.

botemp · 06/04/2020 08:00

I can sort of understand it's a big deal for the religious to not be celebrating a major holiday as usual for the first time ever but organised religion is pretty lethal at the moment. Although it seems people have become a lot more religious through this crisis as well, understandably. I've been quite surprised by the increase in sighting of the words faith and praying on MN which is otherwise quite secular (except in specific pockets).

There's another show on Netflix, Shtisel set in an ultra orthodox Jewish neighbourhood in Jerusalem. Lead actress from Unorthodox is also in that but not as a lead. Loads more episodes and two seasons, hopefully it's of similar calibre. I can imagine that Netflix may be considering commissioning another mini series that explores Moishe's past.

OP posts:
banivani · 06/04/2020 11:24

Yes, I've added Shtisel to my list - I think I might have followed it before though when it was on normal telly. But I don't remember the actress so am unsure if it's the same show. If it is, it's very good.

viennesewhirls · 06/04/2020 16:34

@banivani Yes! The company is Down Dog and they have a whole variety of home workout apps. I went straight for barre because I’m a glutton for punishment/ my brain is too busy for yoga. I love it.
