I’d be astonished if they made such an announcement without HM and Charles being aware. It’d be extraordinary surely.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/01/2020 21:22

After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.

I must say the arrogance of this takes my breath away.

itswinetime · 08/01/2020 21:23

Of course Meghan can wear a tiara the etiquette and I'm sure some one will correct me if I'm wrong is that tiaras are worn by women on the wedding day or married women attending appropriate black tie evening events.

So in theory Zara, Autumn and Eugenie could all wear tiaras. In reality they don't tend to go to tiara worth events. So yes Charles coronation we will almost definitely see Meghan in a tiara who knows before that though.

I think It will depend a lot on the real question which is what is a senior royal? Will the still be HRH's are they still the commonwealth your ambassadors, I'm guessing they won't do formal a royal tours but that's a guess.

For me the only thing the statement seems to say for definite is that they are going to fund themselves (eventually) so they can do what they want. How their role will look going forward I'm not sure any of them know.

I hope they can find away forward that if good for them as I agree with the pp the pointed out they have both been very proactive and positive for the charities they have supported and while I'm actually not pro royal (I just like gowns and bling) I don't see what they have ever done that is worse than any of the others.

AudacityOfHope · 08/01/2020 21:24

What on earth does their sister in laws birthday have to do with anything?

VeniceBeach · 08/01/2020 21:26

I’m going off the BBC article which reads The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed". Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

I assumed they wouldn’t have printed that without a good source, but it’s not fact I realise (hence my ‘if’) Smile

FATEdestiny · 08/01/2020 21:29

I think the announcement was rushed when the unique opportunity to bury the news came with the escalating Iran/USA tensions

Announce a couple of hours after Mr President made his big speech... easy way to avoid the front page.

itswinetime · 08/01/2020 21:30

I wonder if by that the mean they didn't know it was being released at that exact time. I can't believe they had no idea it was coming at all. Most of the press have been speculating for months so if his own brother, father and grandmother could see it coming the fall have bigger problems than we thought!

AppleKatie · 08/01/2020 21:32

Wow I hadn’t seen that on the BBC I’m sure there are some men in suits working overtime at BP tonight. If they made this decision without consulting their family they are truly batshit.

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 21:32

Easy way to make the front page?? Sorry but if they thought that then they are even more naive than I gave them credit for!!

Ariaty · 08/01/2020 21:34

This thread alone means I'm on their side - I've been fluctuating until now. I reckon the hair and creases were to get the response they needed to show us up and make their well deserved departure.

FATEdestiny · 08/01/2020 21:37

hopeishere, I said easy way to avoid the front page.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 08/01/2020 21:39

The always delightful Piers Morgan has weighed in blaming everything on Meghan. Almost like Harry doesn’t have a mind of his own.

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 21:41

Sorry Fate. I mistyped. There's no way they will be avoiding any front page tomorrow and if they thought they would then they're really not PR savvy.

justasking111 · 08/01/2020 21:42

Has anyone seen any public support shown to Harry by his father or brother or in fact anyone in the RF ? I never saw any of them. They really appeared to be wax dummies over this whole mess.

queenofarles · 08/01/2020 21:48

Maybe they’ve tried justasking ? , Charles tried to patch things up between them. No one knows what happened between both brothers , they went from being so close to , to Harry avoiding being with them.

Wetdogloveshubert · 08/01/2020 22:02

Surely they were never going to do many events as a four in any case? Harry accompanied William and Kate to events where it was fun, or worth making a big fuss, but four is overkill. You'd end up with Harry and Meghan looking second best, thanks to protocol, and detracting from the charities. Given that, there wasn't surely the opportunity for Charles and William to publicly show support beyond what they've done. And why should they? This is a professional outfit, and family feuds don't need airing in public.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 08/01/2020 22:10

They’ve said on the news this announcement was done without knowledge of any of the royal family. Of course no one is surprised they wish to take a step back, but the way they’ve gone about it is shocking.

I feel like they’re trying to have their cake and eat it. Why not renounce your titles if you feel so strongly?

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 08/01/2020 22:12

Kate can’t put a foot wrong fashion wise now as she will have all our focus 😂

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 08/01/2020 22:15

Well I don't blame H&M from stepping back, but I'm wondering if they've rushed the actual planning & doing of it. How will it work exactly? Who will pay for security?
Will they actually 'be seen/understood by the general public' as the CEOs of their charity so actual charity workers or will H&M just come across as rent a royals?
Will Meghan go back to acting at some point?
Hopefully Harry & Meghan will be able to be a real force for good, get stuck in, say it how it is, shake things up & occasionally put their neck on the line. Something they really can't do as royals.
Diana was going down this path with her work on land mines with the Halo Trust. I remember at the time it really ruffled feathers & the words on the ground were that certain members of the international arms industry were not impressed.
Yes I know what I'm implying, but I would also like to say that British establishment had nothing to do with Diana's death & were completely shocked. Mind you on the other hand it probably was a complete accident but may have been an accident gone wrong.
I suppose we'll never know (well not for a good 100 years or so)

I'm pleased for Harry & Meghan after all the flak they've had from certain areas of the press.
I hear the Swedish RF actually do a Royal School as in new members of the Swedish RF get a through grounding in all aspects of being a prince or Princess. I think it was Banvani who mentioned that?

Flippant thought of the day, H&M should team up with H&M (the fashion company) on their eco/recycling/conscious clothes thing. They both could make millions & some for charity too.
Though I can't really see it happening as maybe too commercial?

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/01/2020 22:17

Yes that's right about the Swedes, but Madeleine's husband refused so he's not part of the royal family there. But it seems to work for them.

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 08/01/2020 22:21

I think it’s probably a good idea in the long run. Who knows what’s going to happen in the future with the monarchy?

Also just because things have been done one way for the past 100 years doesn’t mean they should have to continue that way for the next 100.

itswinetime · 08/01/2020 22:27

But how do the news know that no one knew? And how does that fit with the storyline that has been pushed for weeks that sources have said this announcement is coming.

I can see maybe the exact timing was a surprise or not quite when they were expecting but I don't see how sources at the palace can be leaking the announcement is coming and also totally shocked when it does if you see why I mean.

I agree it would be nice if Charles and William in particular publicly acknowledged and supported their decision they were all named in the statement though so maybe behind closed doors it's different. Still would be nice particularly for William and Kate who's instagram and Twitter is pretty active to make an acknowledgement/show of support.

FiveTwoFaster · 08/01/2020 22:49

A smiley Sandringham church walk with HMQ and the Cambridges would look good on Sunday. Frocks and Family solidarity in one. Easiest PR. The Queen can beat them up afterwards for not waiting til she has died before they run away. MM saying “not the face!”

itswinetime · 08/01/2020 22:55

Last post on this but for those interested on the Sussex's website there is a full breakdown of what this means and who will be funding what. And what this means in terms of the future of the Sussex's.

From reading it seems that not a lot will change they will stop receiving the sovereign grant and will be able to earn money independently but who'll still undertake royal duties. At least that's how I read it.

It certainly doesn't seem last minute or knee jerk and actually fits in very smoothly with Charles slimmed down Monarchy ideas.

official Sussex page

margotsdevil · 08/01/2020 23:12

That is an interesting read which feels somewhat at odds with the BP statement of early stage of discussion?

If they are happier as a family by doing this (the Sussexes, I mean) then that has to be their choice. Otherwise I fear the media frenzy was going to destroy them.
