**now not know 🙄

TokyoSushi · 08/01/2020 20:26

And yes, Meghan did look much better today!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/01/2020 20:29

I won't comment on the announcement as I gave my prediction upthread, just to say, in response to

Hence the thank you to Canada too - note they'll be spending their time in North America, so it could have been seen as a snub to Canada

Canada is North America isn't it?

AudacityOfHope · 08/01/2020 20:40

Yes My I was going to say that too.

MrsGrindah · 08/01/2020 20:42

I hadn’t heard the news till I came on here! Anyhoo..Kate and Wills in Oop North not so far from me next week. Hope it’s the start of more visits now the Gov suddenly feels sad for us Northerners and that she’s in something different. This thread badly needs some fashion discussion !

WineOrGinOrBoth · 08/01/2020 20:42

I’m sad that they feel the need to go but I’m sadder that we won’t get to see Meghan in a tiara. She’d have looked stunning. Hope they will be happy.

queenofarles · 08/01/2020 20:48

Apparently the Queen knew nothing about the Sussex statement!

mathanxiety · 08/01/2020 20:49

Yes, North America encompasses Canada. It's the name of the continent as opposed to just the United States of America, the second largest state on the continent.

Wetdogloveshubert · 08/01/2020 20:50

Confused I'm aware of the geography, so maybe it's just a misinterpretation by me, and I'm not American so the convention isn't mine on N America v USA.

AngelaScandal · 08/01/2020 20:52

Meghan can wear a tiara when Charles ascends no?
My priorities may be a little skewed dyer 40-odd RSB threads...

AngelaScandal · 08/01/2020 20:52

*after

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 20:54

Of course she can wear a tiara!

miri1985 · 08/01/2020 20:55

Hope they'll be happy but the timing of this is terrible, surely they could have waited a few more days given that its KM's birthday tomorrow

AppleKatie · 08/01/2020 20:56

She seemed much freer pre marriage.

She was much freer before marriage.

If today has taught us nothing else it’s this:
Meghan looks great in black and navy and all that Hmm criticism Kate got for being ‘Waity Katie’ and ‘workshy’ in her early years of marriage whilst William and BP insisted that she needed proper preparation... well they were right weren’t they? If these things are rushed they go tits up.

I feel very sad about the whole thing tbh. I don’t normally consider myself a sycophant but it strikes me that none of them are actually very happy about the situation.

mathanxiety · 08/01/2020 21:00

The continents are North America and South America, each with many countries within them.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 08/01/2020 21:04

Going back to Queens comments about name changes - I’ve name changed a fair few times & have done regularly since the hacking malarkey.

I’m relieved that we will hopefully get to see Megs in a tiara.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/01/2020 21:05

Agree with Applekatie on both colours and long "courtship". It might not be so romantic but in a situation where you marry not just a person but their job then haste is not wise

I to would have liked more Meghan in tiaras action

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/01/2020 21:11

I remember at the time that when William and Catherine split up, it was said she had training for preparation to join the RF. She certainly came back with a different outlook.

I don’t know if such a thing exists, but it’s a unique situation and you’d have thought some sort of preparation should be given prior to joining the family. Even if it’s only the level of intrusion into a private life.

VeniceBeach · 08/01/2020 21:14

How will this work with their charity initiatives? I’m a bit disappointed since Meghan had some great ideas and really threw herself into charity.

Presumably they’ll have to stick mainly with one place when Archie is school age?

If they did announce this without telling Harry’s family then that’s pretty shocking tbh.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/01/2020 21:15

@VeniceBeach Their statement said they're still committed to the Queen, the Commonwealth and their patronages, so I assume they'll still work with the charities they support.

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 21:17

So what's going to change?

FiveTwoFaster · 08/01/2020 21:18

I hope she didn’t go to the Hubb and National Theatre to tell them she was jacking them in for a shinier more fabulous charity that she was inventing herself.

SenecaFalls · 08/01/2020 21:18

I'm not sure what the possible confusion is, but when Americans say North America, they mean the continent and it is often used mainly to include Canada, although there are many other countries in North America, including Mexico. If we are referring to the geography of the US, we would say Northern US. Those of us who are mindful of the fact that we are not the only country occupying the continent often try to avoid saying "America" for the country (especially when we are in Canada) and use United States or US instead, although we do refer to ourselves as Americans.

And an interesting tidbit that we all learn in primary school: our continent was named for an Italian, Amerigo Vespucci.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/01/2020 21:18

Has Buckingham Palace said the Queen wasn't informed? The only thing I've seen from them is a statement saying it's early days and details are yet to be ironed out.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/01/2020 21:18

I think they will do as Diana did and withdraw from their patronages at a future date. They probably don't want to make themselves any more unpopular at this stage.
