Are we all gushing Royal (or not so Royal) apologists on here!?

No. One of the things I liked about these threads when I joined them is that the discussion is polite and often witty and well-informed, and that most posters are not fawning royal sycophants, just interested in clothes.

Anyway, let's move back to fashion. Here we have Max in an Oscar de la Renta coat and tweedy dress. She looks good I think, though the sleeves of the coat are too long. I wonder what she's fishing in her bag for? Grin

Lazy couple. Just leaving others to it. What a mega shambles. Take take take and little give!

That's completely false!
William is somewhat protected against and by the press as he is the heir. He is very lucky, as the knives would truly be out for him and Kate in the gutter press if this was not the case. Unfortunately for Harry and Meghan, this means it has been a pile on. The fact that Meghan is an American divorced actress and not a delicate English rose makes it even worse.
Arguably Meghan did more in her first year than Kate did in her first few years and all while she was pregnant too.
She didn't just go and smile and shake hands, she was very proactive. She engaged, found out problems and helped solved them.
For example: she found out that the kitchen was only open two days a week, she helped them be open everyday. Now the women get experience and have employment, a successful cookbook and can help others.
Harry set up The Invictus Games, Sentebele and others and helped co-found Heads Together.
They are both are really great at getting things done. They have both been really hounded and it has really shaken up Harry, who is a very caring, sensitive and protective man.

astralweaks · 08/01/2020 19:35

William and Kate do not need to perform a “show of strength”. They know their place.

FiveTwoFaster · 08/01/2020 19:35

They have cleverly done this on a Weds so Piers Morgan isn’t on tomorrow to have a rant about them.

ajandjjmum · 08/01/2020 19:36

I personally think that Meghan thought she would be adored as a modern day Princess, and the reality is a lot tougher. They didn't know each other for long enough - she hadn't spent time learning the reality of royal life, just seen the privileges imo.

I think she is a hard worker, but the actual life just hasn't lived up to the dream.

Wetdogloveshubert · 08/01/2020 19:38

@MotherofPearl you didn't attach a picture!

mathanxiety · 08/01/2020 19:40

Dickie Arbiter clearly taking off the gloves in this bilious BBC article.
www.bbc.com/news/uk-51040751
...he compared the move to Edward VIII's abdication in 1936 in order to marry twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson.

"That is the only other precedent, but there's been nothing like this in modern times," he said.
Shock

Asked how being a "part-time" member of the Royal Family might work, he said he did not know.

"If they're going to be based in the UK, it means they are going to be doing a lot of flying (with) a big carbon footprint," he said, adding that this may "raise eyebrows".
Hmm

That was all rather vicious.

(And I am not merely a republican but Irish and living in the US, so none of this makes the slightest bit of difference to me.)

But to compare even slightly with Edward is not on. Edward was a Nazi sympathiser and duty shirker.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/01/2020 19:41

This is sad news. But I think for the sake of their mental health it’s the best thing for them and their adorable baby. I wonder if William and Harry will ever make up and be close again. I imagine this has been on the cards for a while and that this is the rift between them.

Thisenglishlife · 08/01/2020 19:43

One thing that Americans do incredibly well is organising very successful fundraising events and campaigns. Following this announcement, I can imagine Meghan doing something like this. She has a good skill set for that kind of thing.

MotherofPearl · 08/01/2020 19:45

@Wetdogloveshubert

Sorry! I thought I'd attached two! BlushI'll try again.

What secret and incredibly well hidden tough part is there to royal life?

MM was attacked by certain sections of the press because she is African American. It's very possible that, growing up in LA and attending a leading American university, then forging a career for herself in an unforgiving and incredibly competitive industry, she believed that she would be judged on her own merits. It must have been a horrible shock to see the race card, the assumptions about her personality and motivations, the open hostility based on nothing at all about her but rather her background and family origins.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/01/2020 19:48

Max looks short there and I don't think she is at all. Not sure if that's the coat or camera angle causing that.

Interesting decision. Wonder if Meghan will do a bit more acting?

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 08/01/2020 19:51

@MotherofPearl - I thought she was wearing a rather funky black/white bangle. And then I realised it was actually a watch and a fitnesses monitor side-by-side Blush.

AngelaScandal · 08/01/2020 19:52

Late to the party. Minding my manners like a daughter of the Duke of Rutland and belatedly thanking @QueenOfTheAndals for keeping the thread going.
Agree there’s been a Megs pile on since they got back.
Surprised at the decision to step back but I imagine if you haven’t been raised a royal, have been relentlessly targeted by the vitriolic press, disliked by the public (or so it seems) then why wouldn’t you think sod this we’re off. I wouldn’t raise my DC around that kind of environment either.

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 08/01/2020 19:53

Not a fan of Max's coat

MCBerberLoop · 08/01/2020 19:59

One of the things that I thought was so awful was that she was just expected to give up her own life. Why shouldn’t she do some more acting!

I am a republican but think that if we have to have them that William and especially Kate are doing a sterling job. But I think that Kate is exceptional (in her ability to be competent and appropriate and apparently unflappable) and also WILLING to bend her whole life and identity into that of the RF.

We shouldn’t be expecting other people to do this. Not in this day and age!

Oh, and I thought Meghan’s brown outfit was lovely. And her makeup is fab.

Wetdogloveshubert · 08/01/2020 19:59

That coat is very bulky! Not like Max to go so big? The two watches seems very Max-like though; she doesn't do things by half!

MotherofPearl · 08/01/2020 20:03

I hadn't noticed Max's two watches! The coat is a bit bulky but I like the tweedy look which co-ordinates well with the dress.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/01/2020 20:07

Max looks like she is wearing a Fitbit with a watch. I think I will do that!

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/01/2020 20:10

But why not just get a Fitbit watch Max? Hmm maybe we should look for her in their community and see if she’ll be our Fitbit buddy!

Meghans outfit today.
Miles better than yesterday

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 08/01/2020 20:14

I agree MCBerber. It's an awful lot to ask.

Keeping on the clothes subject, I look at photos of Kate when she was younger and she looks like she enjoyed clothes in a way that she just doesn't seem to anymore, maybe because of the fear of getting it wrong somehow. She seemed much freer pre marriage.

paradyning · 08/01/2020 20:18

Meghan did look very polished today. Love that look but still can't get over the black/navy.
Max isn't doing it for me. I think that coat weighs her down and even her pizzazz can't save it!
I think what H&M are doing is v v similar to Princess Madeleine and Chris do. And they are even closer to the throne than H is.

TokyoSushi · 08/01/2020 20:25

I sorry to bring it up again but BP have released their statement know, it doesn't look very coordinated...

Somebody cleverer than me will be able to link but it seems that H&M are rushing it along whilst BP says there's still a lot to sort out...
